[nysbirds-l] Short-eared Owl, Randall's Island, Manhattan (NYC)
At 9:01 a.m. today I accidentally flushed a SHORT-EARED OWL from its nearby perch on the rocky northeast shore of Randall's Island. It flew around the bay, harassed by gulls, for a few minutes and then went out of sight. Within five minutes it returned to perch on a large rock not far from me as I stood on the shore, and it remained there for awhile in plain view. I never saw it fly off, but it did go out of view, presumably choosing a more concealed, lower position on the rocks. Not wanting to risk flushing it again by searching, I moved on. The species is ultra-rare for Manhattan, with the only eBird records being several from morning migratory flight, 2009-2011. An observation from Central Park, from either 1995 or 1996, is mentioned in this New York Times article: https://www.nytimes.com/1996/01/25/nyregion/central-park-is-a-festival-of-odd-birds-275-species-sighted-in-watchers-heaven.html I also had a female BLACK SCOTER at the same location, rare for Manhattan and not reported every year despite being common in the winter in other NYC boroughs. [nysbirds-l] Short-eared Owl - Yes - EPCAL, Calverton, LI
Seen both yesterday late afternoon (5:20pm) and today (5:03pm), two Short-eared Owls, viewed from the northern blocked-off runway dirt access. The birds were flying near the tree line, along the north eastern portion of the taxiway - eventually flying between our vantage point and the hanger buildings. Clearly IDed by long, wide wings, light underside, erratic flight pattern, and dark "wrist" markings. One bird evidently caught a small rodent, which it took to a near by shrub top. [nysbirds-l] Short-eared Owl at EPCAL, Calverton, LI - Update
The previously reported Short-eared Owl has been seen the past two evenings - Monday and Tuesday - at the north-end grassy field of the unused western runway at EPCAL. It was actively hunting at 4:00pm on Monday, and continued until 4:50. On Tuesday, it did not appear until after sunset, being well seen and clearly visible from 4:40-5:00pm. The unused runways are now posted as closed to vehicles, however it is possible to walk the area, although that is not necessary to view the Short-eared Owl. Best views were from the runway barriers at the end of the short dirt road a few hundred feet (on the west) from the traffic light entrance(Route 25). A short-eared owl was seen this evening, heading west and hunting, between the Town Fishing dock area and Tiana Beach Pavilion.
