[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope East Pond now

2017-08-11 Thread Doug Gochfeld
There is currently a juvenile Wilson's Phalarope on Jamaica Bay Wildlife
Refuge's east pond, just north of "Dead Man's Cove" (the muddy cove on the
western side of the pond adjacent to the island). Also a few Pectoral
Sandpipers, and plenty of shorebirds in general.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope, Rufous Hummingbird both NO, + 10/8 (Nassau)

2016-10-08 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

No phalarope at either the pond or from observation platform at Cow Meadow this
norning. I don't know where else it might have been.

MNSA in Oceanside had a White-crowned Sparrow west of the building, spotted by
Joe Viglietta. Also a vocal Clappper Rail. No hummingbird sightings since
Thursday as Sy reported. It had been seen by NE corner of the parking area.
Photos are on the MNSA Facebook page.

Others reported a Clay-colored Sparrow at the Jones Beach west end 2
turnaround. Lots of the regular sparrows at Baldwin Park and nearby Mill Creek
Park as well. No Ammodramus species seen anywhere.

Best,
Brendan

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope at Jones Beach West End (Nassau Co.)

2016-08-01 Thread ken feustel
Joe Viglietta found a Wilson's Phalarope on the ponds between West End 2 and
the Nature Center late this morning. The bird, a molting juvenile (brown/gray
upperparts and brownish cap) was feeding with Yellowlegs on the eastern portion
of the pond complex. Also present were five Stilt Sandpipers. A few poor photos
of the Phalarope are on my flickr site.

[nysbirds-l] WILSON'S Phalarope at Jamaica Bay East Pond

2016-06-11 Thread Andrew Baksh
For anyone contemplating an afternoon twitch, the Wilson's Phalarope continues
on the East Pond, feeding near the raunt and showing well from the overlook. If
you are not familiar with the naming conventions for areas on the pond, here is
a link with an embedded map -
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/07/jamaica-bay-shorebird-report-7-11-13.html?m=1

Many of the usuals continue on the pond as well including a high number of
Black Skimmers for me (27). No sign as yet of the White-faced Ibis.

Cheers,

others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope Captree Marsh, Suffolk, LI

2016-05-15 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Tom Burke and Gail Benson found a male Wilson's Phalarope this evening in the
marsh on the north side of Captree Island, Suffolk County.

The bird was found in the open marsh north of Captree Rd., west of the highway
and east of a line of woody vegetation running north and south. It was very
active, mainly along the extreme western edge of this portion of the marsh.

Visitors should be sure to scrupulously observe parking regulations and to
respect the sentiments of the residents of this quiet community.

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope Suffolk Co Yes

2014-06-06 Thread Mike
The Wilson's Phalarope reported yesterday at the Shirley Marina in Suffolk was
present this morning. The bird was there at around 6:30 AM, left for abut an
hour and refound by Ken Feustel at about 7:30. It was feeding near the south
end of the north impoundment.

The park is on the west side of William Floyd Parkway. The entrance is just
before the bridge to Smiths Point. One local birder told me that there is a
charge for boaters using the ramp but no entry fee. Park along the right fork
away from the boating area.

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope update

2014-06-05 Thread Justin LeClaire
Good evening birders,

Just wanted to shoot a quick update on the PHALAROPE ;-) in Shirley for those
interested...

It was seen this afternoon/evening by a handful of birders. When you park in
the SE corner of the marina parking lot, walk straight up the path/dirt road to
the top of the impoundments. Check the first impoundment, then continue walking
straight and staying left to check the second. If not in either impoundment,
look west from the west side of that northern impoundment and you have a decent
view of the pannes out in the marsh. This evening, myself and three others
found the bird feeding at first with three Greater Yellowlegs (~5:45) and then
again on it's own (~7:30) in the farthest panne to the left as you look at the
marsh from the impoundment. The Phalarope looks puny next to the GRYE, and
seems as though it could walk right under one. A scope is certainly necessary
to identify birds in the pannes, however the bird was also seen originally last
night and also earlier today in the impoundments in very close range.

There is the perfect amount of water in the impoundments for great stopover
shorebirds habitat, I only wish I knew about it during the peak shorebird
migration earlier in the season. Since we're practically neighbors to the
marina, I'll keep checking for the Phalarope in the days to come hoping for a
better look in the impoundments, so feel free to email me offlist for more
updates.

Other birds of interest in the impoundments/pannes included:

Gadwall (one male, potentially an accompanying female)
Little Blue Heron (two adults, one immature)
Greater Yellowlegs
Glossy Ibis (a handful out in the pannes and flying overhead)
Black-bellied Plover (a handful in the pannes)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (5)
Sanderling (1)
Willet
Killdeer (two pairs very protective in some areas around the impoundment,
likely with young or nests nearby)

Good birding!

impoundments at Shirley Marina County Park from a walk last night with her dog

I believe you are supposed to have a permit (~$15 for the season) to park in
the marina lot so keep that in mind, but it doesn't seem to ever be very busy
during the week. Walk up on the impoundments at the southeast corner of the

Could you help me out a little, please? I am trying to figure out from the map
where the vantage points for viewing Scoy Pond and also the area where the
Wilson's Phalaropes have been seen are? I can't exactly tell from Google Maps
where there is access that I could park and view these areas.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope, Mecox Bay

2012-05-27 Thread Angus Wilson
Acting on the timely posting from Anya via Jacob - thanks! - I stopped at Mexoc
Inlet (Watermill, Suffolk Co.) this evening and was joined on the sandflat by
Peter Polshek. A lone WILSON'S PHALAROPE turned into two birds, which we
watched catching insects on a drier section of the flat. Both seemed to be
males, one a tad brighter than the other, although I always find it hard to
distinguish dull females from males. [I say this having just returned from
Montana where I saw hundreds of nesting pairs, many paired males seeming duller
(more gray) than these birds.]

Also present were 3 CASPIAN TERNS, 2 ROSEATE TERNS, 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 14
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and a host of commoner species.

Cheers, Angus Wilson

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope, Mecox Bay

2012-05-27 Thread Jacob Drucker
Hi All,

Anya Auerbach just texted me asking to post an adult male Wilson's phalarope on
the left hand side of the flats at mecox bay. Apparently the flocks of
shorebirds were moving around due to dog activity.

Good Birding,
Jacob Drucker

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalarope, Hecksher Park, Field 7

2011-09-15 Thread Luke Ormand
This evening after work I got word there was a Wilson's Phalarope again
visiting Field 7 at Hecksher State Park. I made it there around 5 and found
the bird in the small puddle in the parking lot (the grassy wetland has
dried up this week). In addition to the bird there were Lesser Yellow Legs,
Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper and Killdeer. The birds flushed
shortly after I arrived do to what was likely a raptor. Eventually they
returned sans the Wilson's Phalarope and the fact that Canadian Geese had
moved in to occupy the wetland probably didn't help. Photos of the birds
can be seen here:
