[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler, Croton Point Park

2022-04-26 Thread Joseph Wallace
The spring mini-invasion of this lovely species continues with an
individual present at least from about 5:20 to 6:00 (still there when we
got chased by the rain), on the road out to Teller's Point just beyond
where all the RVs are parked. It was actively foraging among small
hackberry and other leafless trees on both sides of the road, sometimes
approaching to within 8 or 10 feet of us. If you try for it tomorrow, good
luck! --Joe Wallace

[nysbirds-l] Yellow throated warbler Westchester County

2022-04-12 Thread Trachlar

In trying to keep up the cross posting Kevin McGrath found a Yellow Throated
Warbler at Cranberry Lake Preserve in West Harrison. Quite a find for
Westchester. Bird stayed cooperative giving good looks pretty high in trees on
thicker branches by the lake for a bit mid afternoon not sure about later. No
leaf out yet so was pretty easy to spot

Nota Bene: If driving on Rtes 22/120 through New Castle (a bit N of the park)
be aware of revenue generating cops if you’re a few miles over the limit
especially right after speed limit is reduced). Another reason why I stay in
the river towns — but never had YTWA in Westchester or NYS for that matter
before today — so chose to venture east.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler, Hauppauge (Suffolk)

2019-05-06 Thread Glenn Quinn
My yard in Hauppauge, within earshot (literally) of the Long Island
Expressway, doesn't exactly overflow with neotropical migrants in the
spring. However, the budding oak trees in the neighborhood do regularly
attract such common species as Northern Parula, Myrtle, and the occasional
Black-throated Green Warbler. This evening has been typical with one or two
Parulas singing along with a Myrtle.

Around 7:15, while finishing some yard work, I decided to put the glass on
the singing Parula one last time before I went inside. I found it quickly
and then saw movement in the same tree of an obviously larger warbler. It
turned out, bizarrely, to be a Yellow-throated Warbler. I spent 20 minutes
with it and was able to get all the obvious field marks of this species:
brilliant yellow throat, heavy black sideburns, white spot behind the
sideburns, white eyeline, white wingbars, blue-gray uppers, and large/long
bill. Other than the mall, I can't think of a more unlikely place to see
this species on Long Island. It pays to take one last look before you go
inside!!!

Cheers,

Glenn

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler, Central Park, NYC - Friday 4/19

2019-04-19 Thread Thomas Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City (just south of the C.P. reservoir)

Good Friday, 19 April, 2019 -

An occasionally singing and calling Yellow-throated Warbler has been along the
Central Park bridle path adjacent to the south side of the reservoir; about
mid-way along the path, reasonably obvious as it moves about in nearly-bare
trees. The Central Park (NYPD) Police Precinct station house is not far away,
along the 86th Street Transverse. (The warbler has been immediately north of
that in treees along the bridle path. An area where the species has turned up
in other years in spring. This is at least the 4th Yellow-throated Warbler to
appear in N.Y. City so far this spring, and presumed the first-of-spring for
Manhattan & New York County.

Otherwise a fair amount of migration took place over Thursday night, & some is
ongoing Friday; also a lot of migrants went past Manhattan, & past NYC to
points north, on generally fair skies & strong southerly winds overnight and
into the daylight hours.

good luck if you go,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] yellow-throated warbler - prospect park, bklyn YES

2015-08-09 Thread Kai
Relocated On the point 5 minutes ago.

Date: Sun, 9 Aug 2015 00:09:36 -0400
Subject: [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay East Pond Report 8-8-2015
From: birdingd...@gmail.com
To: nysbirds-l@cornell.edu; ebirds...@yahoogroups.com

A pleasant morning and afternoon was enjoyed on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge. Made so, by the weather, birds and company. Birding with Tom
Burke, Gail Benson, Shai Mitra, Patricia Lindsay, Steve Walter, Rex and Renee
Recker and Bob Shriber, we worked both south and north end of the ponds.
An estimated 1500 Semipalmated Sandpipers were the dominant shorebird species
with the remaining species of shorebirds making up another 300 or so birds. The
juvenile numbers are building, especially among the Semipalmated and Leasts. In
total, there were 14 species of shorebirds that most in our group observed. The
list includes:
American OystercatcherBlack-bellied PloverSemipalmated PloverKilldeerSpotted
SandpiperGreater YellowlegsLesser YellowlegsWHIMBRELRuddy TurnstoneLeast
SandpiperWhite-rumped SandpiperPectoral Sandpiper (2 birds)Semipalmated
SandpiperShort-billed Dowitcher
The Pectoral Sandpipers were seen on the bayside off the north dyke late this
afternoon and a calling Whimbrel was a flyover coming in from the bayside
heading south over the pond.
We did not see the Red-necked Phalarope that was reported by Isaac Grant
earlier in the day. The 1 Stilt Sandpiper that I had as recently as Thursday
was also not seen today by anyone in our group. I have been checking on the
arrival and departure of birds all week and based on my observation it seems
that the turnover on the pond is happening quite frequently (favorable winds I
suppose). Tomorrow, could be quite a different day with more or less birds on
the pond.
The non shorebird sightings are nothing much to write about. The usual
waterfowl assortment for this time of the year were present. Isaac, also
reported having Blue-winged Teals this morning but unfortunately no one in my
group were able to connect with any. A good number of Great Blue Herons were on
the pond and nice mix of juvenile Little Blue Herons and Snowy Egrets make a
good study in separating them. The juvenile Peregrine Falcons, now up to three
were their usual nuisance selves, with one female observed buzzing a Glossy
Ibis which received a ding on the forehead.

A couple of notes on shorebirding on the pond this season. The Algae, is making
shorebirding quite the task in terms of counting and observing the birds. Under
normal circumstances, shorebirds could be observed feeding on the exposed
shoreline. The Algal mat has provided additional areas where the smaller
birds--your Semipalamted and Least Sandpipers are seen feeding on. This means,
the birds are quite scattered throughout the pond and are not concentrated
along the shoreline.
Regarding navigating around the pond. The water level, is where it needs to be
finally and the valve is shut. This is right in line with the expected water
level draw down and now nature takes its course in drying out the exposed
mudflats. I want to remind birders and visitors not to bird the East Pond
casually. There are some tricky areas around the pond on both ends. Please
exercise extra caution when navigating around the deep cut on the south end;
last year a photographer went down in that area with all his gear and today
someone else took a dip. Some smaller cuts on that end are covered with the
Algal mat and looks quite deceptive. If unsure, look for previous tracks to
help with your decision making.
I have done all that I could to work with NPS in getting the pond ready as best
as it could be. Now, let's hope for birds and lots of them to make up for all
the shorebirding we missed. When you stop in at the refuge, please take a
moment to convey your thanks to NPS for the efforts made or write to those
folks we went to when action was needed to lower the water.
Good Shorebirding!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler at Hempstead Lake State Park (Nassau Co.)

2015-04-04 Thread Ken Feustel
We observed the YTWA at about 12:00PM at Valley Stream State Park feeding next
to the culvert that carries the stream south under Hendrickson Avenue. It would
perch on the vertical concrete headwall and search the cracks in the concrete
for food. While watching the bird it suddenly flew across Hendrickson Ave. to a
tree on the south side of the road. Birders should check both the north and
south sides of Hendrickson Ave. for the bird. Hempstead Lake State Park had a
nice variety of swallows, including Cliff (Thanks to Andrew for posting!),
Bank, Barn, Tree and Rough-winged (not seen by us). The Cliff and Barn are
particularly elusive and had appeared with the many Tree Swallows sporadically.
Also new for us was Greater Yellowlegs and Great Egret at Captree Island.

The Yellow-throated Warbler continues and is being quite cooperative along
the stream at Valley Stream State Park.

If you are going to try for it, the stream is east of the bathrooms near a
picnic area. Look for a Bamboo Grove to know you are within the area the
bird frequents.

Don't often post but its a good time for YT warbler update. Two have been
heard since the spring. One stays pretty tight in the Norway spruce by between
the buildings by the Main Pond. The other moves from the driveway pines by the
building to the field near the feeders to the entrance.

Hoping to confirm 2 nesting pairs this year (greedy?). Fledges were first
observed last year on July 14. Please let us know if you have luck!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler @ Cunningham Park

2014-05-03 Thread Steve Walter
A Yellow-throated Warbler made a brief visit to a water attraction in
Cunningham Park (Queens) in the early afternoon. I stayed there a while and
didn't return, so I don't know if it pays to try giving directions.

While I have this opportunity, I'll mention that I've posted a Willow
Ptarmigan picture to my web site http://www.stevewalternature.com/ , for
anyone that might want to take a look.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler / Connetquot River State Park Preserve

2013-06-21 Thread robert adamo
With thanks to Joan Caffrey, Mary Brogan, RuthAnn Adamo, Eric Salzman and
Annie McIntyre, for helping me see and hear this much sought after species.

On Thursday, after having a delightful lunch on the veranda of the mansion
at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum S.P. in Great River, along with Joan &
Mary (our two house-guests), and my wife, who initially suggested this
magnificent setting, I took leave of them as they strolled along the
Connetquot River, to try for the above warbler. The 2 parks are ~ 5
minutes (max) apart "as the crow flies", but at least a 15 minute
drive, due to the "great divide" created by both the Montauk and Sunrise
Highways.

Following up on Eric's sighting of 6/19, and with the huge help of Annie,
who pointed out the yellow-throated's song, as we traveled the bird's
established foraging route, I finally got to hear this species'
vocalization - this, coming after seeing this species on 6 previous
instances - with the first being on 10/9/86, on Contoy Island, off of
Cancun, Mexico.

I also saw & heard an E.Wood Peewee, and believe I heard a Yellow-throated
Vireo, in the same area as the warbler (from the road, behind the parking
area for horses/trailers). As a Red-eyed Vireo sang it's 2 part song, it
was, alternatively, answered or voiced over, by a raspier "red-eyed
song"...a sort of "dueling pianos" experience !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Caumsett SP (Suffolk Co.) 5/27

2013-05-27 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi all,

There was a Yellow-throated Warbler along the Fisherman's Drive at Caumsett
State Park this afternoon around 1600. I first found the bird after it sang a
strange song that I didn't recognize (something like a descending Canada
Warbler, not the "classic" descending song). It did not sing again.

Coordinates of the YTWA: 40.939112,-73.477658

Other highlights were three Brant in the Sound, many Bank Swallows from the
nearby colony, and a few Orchard Orioles.

Yesterday, at Massapequa , Long Island, about 5 PM, next to where the
brook flows at the south end of the pond, at the Pittsburgh Ave. entrance to
the park, I found a flock of warblers. Most interesting was a Yellow
-throated Warbler, which stayed in close view for over 15 minutes, as close as
10
feet away only a few feet off the ground, when I had to go home for
dinner. I tried to take its picture but it moved too fast to get a good one.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Still at Alley Pond

2013-04-17 Thread Steve Walter
I finally caught up with the Yellow-throated Warbler at about 3:30, along a
paved trail that heads north from Little Alley Pond. If walking north, the
restoration area would be on your right. The warbler was near a large tree
on the left side of the trail, with a fallen tree on its right. It was
bopping around on and near the ground for about 5 minutes, allowing me to
get killer photos. About 4:00, I relocated it (aided by its singing) in a
large tree on the east side of where a pond once existed near the bottom of
the large staircase. After about 15 minutes, it flew northeastward and I
moved on. My inaugural Black-and-White Warbler was lower in this same tree
at that time. No sign of previously unreported Kentucky or Prothonotary
Warblers.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Albany 12/9/12

2012-12-09 Thread Will Raup

Yesterday I got a call from my mother who lives about 2 blocks east of me here
in Albany, that she had a strongly patterned warbler that landed on her window
sill.  Her description strongly suggested Yellow-throated Warbler, although
her description also fit a Blackburnian Warbler.  It was too late in the day to
check it out in person, but I headed over this morning.

In our conversation she mentioned that it was traveling with a typical winter
mixed flock (Black-capped Chickadee, Downy Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch
etc.).  I staked out her backyard and feeder this morning for about 1.5 hours
and found nothing but a hoard of House Sparrows and Mourning Doves.

Upon my return home (remember only about 2 blocks away), I heard a flock of
Chickadees, Downy Woodpeckers and WB Nuthataches and decided to check it out.
After a few minutes of searching I found the Warbler moving high through the
leafless tree's.  Yellow-throated Warbler is a life bird (and new yard bird!),
but the bird had a short yellow throat, much smaller than most field guides
show (hence why my mother didn't want to commit to that ID), but all the field
marks add up and seen well as the bird sat very still in the tree.  I got some
distant but recognizable pictures.

Ironcially, as I watched the warbler a Common Redpoll dropped out of the sky
and landed next to the warbler, creating an interesting combination of birds
that nest both north and south of the region at the same time (wish I could
have gotten a picture).

The bird appears to be following a Chickadee flock that is roaming the
neighborhood, meaning it has no reliable spot... for now.

Also had a few hundred Snow Geese pass over head.

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Continues at Connetquot River S. P. (Suffolk Co.)

2012-05-24 Thread ken feustel
During a breeding bird survey at CRSP I again encountered the previously
reported Yellow-throated Warbler singing on both sides of the road to the fish
hatchery. This bird has now been present in the same location since early
May.The bird ranged from the entrance road toll booth north to the gray barn
building. The bird moved frequently and was actively singing, but no evidence
of breeding was observed. Otherwise, the birding was slow. No Acadian
Flycatchers were noted, and only three Wood Pewees were recorded in a five mile
walk. No migrant warblers were heard or seen.

Alec Human spotted a Yellow-throated Warbler this morning. The bird was later
seen by John Barton, Kevin (I believe that's his name - I don't know his last
name), and myself. John and I had views as close as 10 feet away (John took
many photos). Alec also had a Canada Warbler which I believe all were able to
see. I will submit a complete list of sightings later today.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Connetquot State Park, Suffolk County

2012-04-29 Thread John Gluth
I arrived at Connetquot this morning (~8:15) not having heard anything about
the Yellow-throated Warbler since Derek Roger's post Monday, let alone that
it had relocated from the fish hatchery. So I planned to make the 15-20 min.
walk up there and then just concentrate my search in the area it had been
frequenting, hoping to hear its song. Well, I had barely begun my northward
trek up the hatchery road when I heard THAT song coming from trees growing
along the north side of the old horse corral (between main buildings and the
horse barn: 40.751682,-73.151090)! I was stunned by this seemingly amazing
bit of serendipity. I followed the bird over the next few minutes as it
moved east through the trees (mid-upper canopy) between the corral and road.
Then it stopped singing. I waited 10 minutes for it to resume. When it
didn't, I continued up to the hatchery since I still had much of the 2 hours
search time I'd allotted myself.

The walk to the hatchery was pretty quiet, the one notable exception being
3 Ovenbirds, each advertising its territories to its neighbors. The area
around the hatchery was moderately more active. During the 75 minutes I
spent looping around the complex I encountered low single-digit numbers of
Yellow-rumped, and Yellow warblers, 1 B&W Warbler, 1 Common Yellowthroat,
a few Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 1 Great-crested Flycatcher, 1 E. Phoebe,
and 1 Baltimore Oriole. Chipping Sparrows were abundant. A pair of Fish
Crows were building a nest.

Upon returning to where I'd had the YTWA earlier, I again heard it singing,
and went into pursuit mode. That's when Dave Klauber and I converged on the
bird, both of us getting nice looks at it over ~10 minutes. If you go for
the bird, the best plan of action would probably be to stand in the field
adjacent to the parking lot, close to the White Pines lining the road
(across from the garage, 40.750085,-73.151810), and just listen. The bird
should eventually come within earshot. The bird was seen in oaks, White
Pines and Pitch Pines.

The best of the few mediocre photos I got of the YTWA can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Connetquot State Park, Suffolk County

2012-04-29 Thread David Klauber

The Yellow-throated warbler previously reported near the hatchery apparently
has not been there the last couple of days, however either it or another one is
near the toll booths. Thanks to Derek Rogers for the heads up. Although not
posted here, a couple of people saw it yesterday just north of the toll booths
in the pines, and apparently in the deciduous trees along the water. This
morning from about 10:30 to 11 John Gluth and I saw it from the pines just west
of the main buildings that are a bit north of the toll booths to nearby
deciduous trees. It ranged from the southern edge of these pines (this is just
north of the paved road on the short stretch where it goes east-west before
curving north towards the hatchery) to the deciduous trees northwest of the
pines, adjacent to an overgrown field. This was just west of the main paved
path that goes to the hatcery. When I left it was working its way south to the
pines again. This area has a sign saying bird breeding area - do not enter

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler-Connetquot S.P., Suffolk

2012-04-22 Thread Derek Rogers
A note from Annie:

The Yellow-throated warbler is singing again this morning. It's favoring the
same trees - evergreens and oaks by the comfort stations at the hatchery. New
additions this morning included BG gnatcatcher, Black & white and blue-winged
warblers. Nice birds on a gray morning.

If you're going, aim for the morning - it hasn't been seen/heard after mid-day.

Good luck!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Connetquot River S.P.

2012-04-21 Thread Derek Rogers
Thanks to the eyes and ears of Annie McIntyre, I enjoyed great views of a
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER near the Hatchery at Connetquot.

I arrived on site at 11:45 and the bird was singing loudly, as Annie described.
During my observation the bird seemed to favor the oaks and evergreens that are
located on either side of the restroom facility.

The bird was primarily gleaning for insects but at times would hawk aerial
prey. It would target small pockets of insects and hover within their cloud for
several seconds, snapping what it could catch before returning to it's favored
tree locations.

The bird has been on site since Thursday, 4/19. Perhaps this is the same
visitor from last year?

A singing YELLOW WARBLER caught my attention on my return trip. It was just
west of the large pond in the hedgerow. This is the same individual noted by
Ken Thompson and his group.

Best,
Derek Rogers

Thanks to Ken's timely post I went to the beach and quickly found the

male Purple Martin flew west past the turnaround. Nice find Sam & crew - only

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Hunter's Garden, Eastport NY

2011-05-25 Thread Patrick Santinello
Had a Yellow-throated Warbler (albilora) at Hunter's Garden on CR 51 in
Eastport today. The bird was deep in the trails to the west of the clearing.
North and east of where "Toppings Path" meets "Hot Water Street" . Also had
a nice male Blackburnian Warbler as well as a couple American Redstarts. The
usual suspects present (Ovenbird, Yellow, Pine). Tons of Red-eyed Vireo
around. Nice flock of 18 or so Cedar Waxwings..Lots of birdsong today with
my first Veery(s) since returning to NY, never tire of hearing that song.

Good birding

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated warbler

2011-04-25 Thread Karen Rubinstein
Adding to the other reports of Yellow-throated Warbler -- one was seen
Sunday morning at the Grace Estate in East Hampton, Suffolk County. It was
rather confiding, often giving long views as it picked insets off tree
bark.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler still at Connetquot

2011-04-24 Thread Jim Osterlund
John Turner's find was present today at around 1100, pretty much where
he described; Connetquot State Park, Oakdale, Suffolk County; seen
along the park's red trail, just south of the trout hatchery, foraging
high in the trees that line the river. I would add as a refinement
that the site is beyond the bridge, but short of the Artesian Well.

Thanks, John: your post may have gone unheeded, but not by me.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler, Staten Island NYC 4/22

2011-04-22 Thread Tom Fiore
Friday, 22 April, 2011 -

Via the Staten Island NaturaList, as reported by George Bouquio - a
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER has again been seen at Clove l;akes Park in
northern Staten Island, N.Y. City - with the location inside the park
as noted in G.B.'s report: "Yellow-throated courtesy of Ed Johnson.
Along main walkway, where the bridle path crosses the stream south of
Martlings Pond."

Clove Lakes Park is along and northwest of Victory Boulebard and can
be reached by city bus from the Staten Island ferry terminal, with
buses taking as little as 20 minutes to reach the park, depending on
traffic. The park is usually a very good area to find spring migrants
and is relatively easy to bird, although very ambitious birders can
find paths that involve more up & down hill slopes. Many birders
simply visit the areas along the paths that parallel the stream, which
widens to a series of ponds as it flows north away from Victory
Boulevard. Restrooms are usually available next to the restaurant
which is a short way from Victory Boulevard. It's also possible to
walk back (northeast) along Victory to Silver Lake park & reservoir,
which may have some migrants besides whatever water birds are there on
the reservoir. Continue past the golf course entrance to find the
pedestrian entry to Silver Lake. City buses back to the ferry are
available all along Victory, if walking back to Silver Lake areas, too.

- - -

I've heard third-hand that the Prothonotary Warbler was continuing in
the N.Y. Botanical Garden this Friday morning, in the same larger of
the "Twin Lakes" where it's been for nine days; (in the Bronx, N.Y.
City) - perhaps someone will confirm with first-hand sighting.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Point Gratiot Park, Dunkirk, Chautauqua Co.

2011-04-17 Thread Jim Pawlicki
As relayed earlier on geneseebirds by Willie D'Anna, a Yellow-throated
Warbler was present this afternoon at Point Gratiot Park in the town of
Dunkirk, Chautauqua County. The bird was in the small DEC woodlot at the
north end of the park as accessed by turning onto Point Drive North from
Route 5 and then parking at the small DEC headquarters lot. The bird was
roughly in the central portion of the small woodlot and was loosely
associating with 4-6 Yellow-rumped Warblers. Also present in the park were 2
Eastern Towhees, Brown Thrasher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, several
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and singing Winter Wren. Given the strong SW
winds, there were large numbers of gulls and waterbirds flying around and
resting in Dunkirk Harbor. Notable were several Common Loons, 728+
Double-crested Cormorants (3/4 of which were sheltering on the inside edge
of the outer breakwall), 98 Caspian Terns, 2 Common Terns, 2 1C Iceland
Gulls, 1/2C Glaucous Gull, 3C Lesser Black-backed Gull, and a variant adult
Herring Gull with bright yellow-orange legs. Photos are here:

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Brooklyn

2011-04-14 Thread Robert Bate
Another or the same YTWA was found this morning near the Maryland Monument
in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The word went out that it had been seen in the
pine trees above the monument and our Brooklyn Bird Club spring migration
walk headed right over to the area. Tom Stephenson found the bird after we
came around a second time by the monument and we all got great looks. Rob
Jett has an excellent interactive map of birding hotspots in Prospect Park

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&msid=109731098578533619137.00044cabbb2876dba6134&z=14

Just click on "Maryland Monument." The bird was a bit south of the monument
but adjacent to the lawn surrounding it when we saw it; earlier it had been
seen upslope in the pines. Good luck if you go, hopefully it will linger.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler, Central Park, NYC 5/6

2010-05-06 Thread Tom Fiore

Thursday, 6 May 2010

A Yellow-throated Warbler was along the south side of the Pool in
Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City), as of 9 a.m. - the closest park
entrance is at West 100 Street & Central Park West, & the Pool's south
side is a very short way down to the right from there. It otherwise
has been moderately quiet for migrants in much of the park's north
end, but there are patches of activity... further reports later in the
day.
