[nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler at Fort Tilden, Queens
Date: 10/3/2010 Location: Fort Tilden, Queens County This afternoon, while looking for the previously reported Summer Tanager in the brushy area between the ballfield and the road, I had a very brief look at a Connecticut Warbler feeding on the ground. It quickly vanished, unfortunately, while I was trying to get Alison on it. We could not relocate it despite careful searching for the next hour. It appeared to be an adult as the hood was gray rather than brown. I managed to spot the Summer Tanager as well later on. [nysbirds-l] Trying for "the booby prize"
En-route to Jones Beach St Pk, Nassau Co., I stopped at the Robert Moses St/Pk Hawk Watch from about 0930 to 1130 AM. N. Harrier, then Osprey, were the most numerous species during that time, followed by Kestrel, Merlin, a few Peregrines, and a couple of both, Sharp-shinned & Cooper's Hawk. An imm. Bald Eagle was seen prior to my arrival, although I did manage to see the continuing Cattle Egret, at Parking Field 5 For the 2nd day in a row, I looked for the Brown Booby at the J.B. Fishing Pier, Coast Guard area, and of course, all the land, sea, and air I could safely peruse, while motoring between both state parks. To no surprise, I couldn't find it... only to wonder how far afield it got, a full day after being released? While at J.B., I did see my FOS Prairie W. and D-e Junco. [nysbirds-l] Visiting from Portland Oregon. What not to miss?
Seth and I (Michelle) will be visiting NYC at the end of October. It is business trip so we will only have one day to play. We have never been to NY and can't think of a better way to play than seeing birds we don't have in the Pacific NW. Where is the best place to go/see?? We don't need to see the sights, we want to see the birds! We won't have a car so we are looking for places or one spectacular place easily accessible by cab or public transport. Any suggestions are welcome.
