[nysbirds-l] Another L.I. Raven

2011-07-05 Thread Joel Horman
At about 11:15 AM today a Common Raven was seen after it perched for
about a minute in the canopy at Wildwood S.P., Wading River. Although it
did not vocalize, the wedge-shaped tail was clearly seen, and the
wingtips slightly exceeded the tail in length. Some poor Ipod photos
were obtained.

Considering the distance, it is likely not one of the birds being seen
in Hampton Bays.

[nysbirds-l] Cupsogue 7/5 - Brown Pelican

2011-07-05 Thread Steve Walter
As I made my way out onto the Cupsogue flats early this morning, I spotted a
BROWN PELICAN on a sandbar to the west. Within a minute, it was flushed by a
Coast Guard boat (I hope they accomplished something today besides scaring
wildlife). The pelican flew off to the west and I didn't see it again.

Unfortunately, terns were lackluster today. The Black Tern is still around. I
guess the next most interesting thing was a first summer Least Tern, which
stayed in the company of the Common Terns, rather than the Leasts. After that,
you'd have to enjoy variations in non-breeding plumage Commons.

[nysbirds-l] Pine Siskin on Yellow Barn Rd, Dryden

2011-07-05 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
As I was preparing to leave for work this morning I glanced out at my feeder
and was surprised to find a PINE SISKIN with a batch of American Goldfinches.

Yellow Barn Road is west of the village of Dryden in Tompkins Co.
