[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon, Black-headed Gull, Eared Grebe in Queens/Brooklyn
Spent a little time at Jamaica Bay this morning in the rain - both ponds are now largely frozen but the duck seem to be hanging around. The EURASIAN WIGEON was in a small hole in the ice on the East Pond at around noon (I'd checked earlier and not seen it). Best viewed from the Big John's Pond entrance. On the West side, the EARED GREBE remains in the same area (close to Broad Channel) and an immature Black-crowned Night Heron and a Peregrine were around the West Pond. No sign of the Barrows - there were about 8 distant goldeneye but all the drakes were Common. On the way back to Manhattan I made a stop at the Owl's Head treatment plant where the BLACK-HEADED GULL was easily viewed from the fishing pier. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Nassau, Suffolk, and Montauk Audubon Trip
A trip with saw mill river Audubon to Montauk produced some great looks at some great birds. -At point lookout in Nassau county we saw the recently reported glaucous gull. we also saw ~100 snow buntings, 12 black bellied plovers, a Bonaparte's gull, and sanderlings. -At Jones Beach West End we saw the pure white snowy owl. my friend got some great photos as well (while keeping our distance from the owl as to not spook it). -at Shinnecock Inlet we looked for the previously reported snowy, but did not find it. we did see some goldeneye, some eiders, and some old squaw. -At Montauk we had huge numbers of scoters and eiders. also ~20 Razorbills (Some very close looks). we also got some super close looks at gannets (they look prehistoric up close) -We then went to Lake Montauk Inlet where we saw ~160 loons (both species), ~40 horned grebes. and a very close razorbill. also some purple sandpipers out on the jetty. -then we stopped at the lobster restaurant next to Ice House Pond (which was frozen) for some excellent sea-food. we saw many more grebes out in fort pond bay from the restaurant. -on fort pond there were coots, canvasback, ring necked duck, widgeon, gadwall, and all 3 mergansers. -We ended the trip with 72 species and some lifers for me! good birding! -Lewis Lolya -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Manhattan: Rufous Hummingbird and Barred Owl
Hi all, An afternoon walk in New York City in the middle of January can hardly get any better than today's walk - with or without dog. First stop was the AMNH where I saw the Rufous Hummingbird for the first time in a week. Then in to Central Park and when walking under some pine trees this blob shape caught my eye, and sure enough - the blob was the Barred Owl. As it was close to fly-out time I decided to stay around for a while. I was hoping to see it start moving about and maybe even see it trying to catch a squirrel. Just as it flew off from its roosting spot someone walked up behind me - it was Jacob Drucker (shaky moment in video). Both of us got to watch it take off and chase a couple of squirrels. It looked quite clumsy flying through the branches, but it was thrilling to watch it. Twice it tried to catch a squirrel by walking towards it along the branch on which they both were. A short video of the Rufous Hummingbird here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/landp/6717339393/ and a video capture of the Barred Owl shortly after fly-out here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/landp/6717334295/ good birding, Anders Peltomaa Manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn/Red Hook to Coney Island/Glaucous Gull/BH Gull/Red-necked Grebe
Spent the morning and all afternoon traversing the Brooklyn shoreline, accessing as many spots as possible to view Upper and Lower New York Bay (also known as Gravesend) and Gowanus Bay. It rained hard at times but the wind was mercifully light and I was able to stay fairly dry with the use of an umbrella. Highlights were few with the birds in the subject line being most notable. The BLACK-HEADED GULL was sitting on the railing of Veteran's Memorial Pier and there were 2 RED-NECKED GREBE off the Coney Island boardwalk at around 37th street. This is the 3rd time I have seen RN Grebe in this location in the last couple of weeks. The personal highlight for me was a 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL sitting on the beach at Coney Island about 150 yards east of the fishing pier. This was Kings county lifer #300! A poor digiscoped photo (light was fading and with point and shoot had to use 800 ISO so grainy) is here: http://tinyurl.com/799rktf Funny that at the beginning of 2011 I was at 289 in Brooklyn and thought it would take 2-3 years or more to get to 300 but Hurricane Irene provided me with 7 county lifers in 2 days! There were also 4 CANVASBACKS and 36 BONAPARTE'S GULLS off the 58th Street NY Water Taxi parking pier. [nysbirds-l] Little Gull at Jones Inlet (Nassau Co.)
I had not been to Jones Inlet since the Southern Nassau CBC and wanted to see what changes in the Inlet's bird populations may have occurred as a result of the recent cold spell. Upon arrival at the Fisherman's Parking Lot there were clearly more Bonaparte's Gulls then my early January visit. After scoping for a few minutes a good size flock of Bonies (60+) was seen feeding on the northwest side of the Inlet. In the flock was a diminutive gull with a bold black "M" on the upperwings, and a dusky cap - a first winter Little Gull. The flock scattered and continued to feed up and down the Inlet, and the Little Gull was not relocated. There were good numbers of Common and Red-throated Loons in the Inlet, but I was unable to find a Pacific Loon. Other birds of note were a single Razorbill and one Common Eider.
