Yes. Imm. Red-shouldered. Nice photo. All the classic field marks are visible in the photo - even the pale translucent windows near the tips of the primaries, as well as the streaking on the upper breast ( which a red-tail would never have), lack of dark patagial bar, and the pattern of barring on the tail. [nysbirds-l] More Kings Co. Red-necked Grebes +Tree Swallows
It was a beautiful day to be on the Hudson as I filled in for Gabriel Willow on his NYC Audubon Winter Eco Tour. Notable sightings include a pair of Red-necked Grebes continuing(?) to favor the Erie Basin, in the waters viewed just from Ikea Brooklyn in Red Hook. A great article by Team Birdcast on the subject of RNGR migration suggests that they could be new individuals, or maybe at least one new individual. One was in the partially enclosed area between the first two docks extending southwest from the western corner of the Ikea parking lot, while the other, between Ikea Dock proper and the very long damaged one just to it's east. There was likely another pair, also close to the seawall, between the 58th street parking lot and the water treatment plant off of Owl's Head Park in Bay Ridge. It would be great if someone birding the area could confirm positively or negatively of there presence since they were seen from a relatively fast moving boat. Posture, silhouette, and especially the slightly downward pointing, dagger shaped bill strongly suggested this species, even at a distance. It was also nice to see a small flock of five Tree Sparrows feeding off and over Swinburne Island. Swinburne Island is located about 3/4 of a mile east of midland beach in Staten Island and about a mile west of Seagate in Brooklyn in the northern part of Lower New York Bay. This Island is a favored wintering locations for Harbor Seals in the Bay of New York, and is a federally protected marine sanctuary and so is not open to the public. Keep'em up! Re: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach/ Meadowbrook Parkway: Snowy Owl, ~100 unknown blackbirds - please help ID
Actually Rob, I think you're original identification was the correct one. In my view these are BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES, not Rusty Blackbirds. Icterids can be tricky at times and it's important to consider several criteria when making an identification: plumage, structure, vocalizations and habitat. The relatively uniform appearances and rather warm brown tones of the bulk of these birds fits female BT Grackle better than Rusty. A couple of males are present and seem to show grackle-like tails, although not as pronounced as breeding adult males. The first thing that caught my eye however was the birds' structure, especially that of the bills on birds with their heads turned to the side, appearing too long and heavy for Rusty Blackbird. Many of these may be young birds, but that's hard to tell. If I understand your directions, these blackbirds were in trees adjacent to the extensive saltmarshes separating the barrier beach from the mainland, perfect Boat-tail habitat but uncharacteristic for Rusty, which is closely tied to freshwater swamps except during active migration. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End/ Meadowbrook Parkway Sunday: Rough Legged Hawk, Blackbirds (not Rusty)
Hi Everyone, Thanks for everyone's help with the blackbird ID from yesterday - most are saying they were Boat Tailed Grackles and not Rusty Blackbirds. Speaking of blackbirds, at Jones Beach West End and by Meadowbrook Parkway I saw Red Wing Blackbirds and Boat Tailed Grackles. At the Coast Guard Marina I saw the same waterfowl as Saturday - a female bufflehead and 2 Horned Grebes as well as 2 Common Loons and Brant. There were more birds on the median today: Killdeer, Juncos, Mockingbirds. I met a very pleasant couple looking for a light phase/ghost Northern Harrier, but we found a typical one over the dunes. A crowd was gathered observing a Snowy Owl. Along the Meadowbrook, I saw the previously reported Rough Legged Hawk and also 3 Red Tailed Hawks. Being with a novice out in the field, on a fairly warm, winter day when there are birds around, is to experience real joy ! Most of the shared sightings are firsts for the newbie, and his or her excitement, wonder and appreciation are contagious ! The following list is in in consecutive order: !) [nysbirds-l] Montauk birds
Some good birds out east seen by me and Bobby Rosetti. The male and female Barrow's Goldeneye were seen well in the southwest corner of Lake Montauk around 10 AM, and an immature Bald Eagle flew over the area. Hook Pond was mostly frozen and a very quick stop had only a female common Merg of note. At Montauk Point there were many scoters, mostly Surf and Black, only a few Common Eider and no alcids - ditto Camp Hero. By the restaurant on the beach were an adult and second winter Lesser Black Backed Gull - no white-winged gulls. Very few birds at Montauk Harbor with only a Great Cormorant on the tower on the jetty. And finally as Doug noted the Pink-footed Goose which we lucked into, finding it as soon as we arrived around 2:30 - the Cackling Goose was found a little later. It flew off a bit before 3:30, headed northeast. A very tame male Pheasant walked by us on Roanoke Avenue -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re:[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach/ Meadowbrook Parkway: Snowy Owl, ~100 unknown blackbirds - please help ID
Update: with some help (thank you!) the blackbirds were identified as Rusty Blackbirds - I counted at least 106 (there was one starling mixed in). I'll reported to e-bird for the Rusty Blackbird outreach program. [nysbirds-l] Floyd Rough Legged Correction
Upon further review the Rough legged hawk I reported from Floyd Bennett Field today was in fact a Grey Ghost Harrier as seen from below. I was wrong, I miss identified the bird. I wanted to see an RLHA and I did. unfortunately there wasn't actually one in my optics.
Keep'em up! [nysbirds-l] Central Park -- American Woodcock
Shortly after 5 this afternoon I was walking from the Oven to Bow Bridge when an American Woodcock flew pretty much directly in front of me and curved around to land at the water's edge of the Riviera section of the Lake. I was stunned a moment then headed toward where it landed and then it flew again to the top of the meadow area right north of it. I searched (among lots of sparrows) and didn't see it until it flew again, over the rise. I tried to find it in the field area north and at the Oven and couldn't find it so ran to the feeders to see if I could get more pairs of eyes and binoculars to help find it. Martin, Saul, Margaret and Evangeline (my apologies if I spelled any of these names wrong) came with me and I showed them where I'd seen it and we looked and Martin caught a glimpse at the top of that rocky hill that's directly between the Oven and Warbler Rock. We went up there and looked and then heard it and saw it fly to over by Warbler Rock, so we went over there. We looked and looked and then heard and saw it fly again and it seemed to land at the water's edge of the Lake just west of Bow Bridge. So we went over there and again looked and looked, but we never saw a good close-up look at the bird on the ground. I wanted to let people know, though, that they should keep their eyes and ears open tomorrow if they're in the Park!! --Emilie Storrs -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes in East Rockaway
It might be a big deal in another winter, but I'll report it anyway. There were two Red-necked Grebes on the Mill River, by the East Rockaway (Nassau) train station this afternoon. Last week's Canvasbacks were gone, but two female Common Goldeneyes remain. Also out of place this far upriver are continuing Red-breasted Mergansers, but no Common Mergansers yet. Unlike my last couple of RN Grebe encounters, these (one more than the other) were active and put on a show - diving and bringing up prey (looked like Grass Shrimp), snaking along the water's surface, wing flapping, and even calling. All this at often close range, in good light, on calm water - a dream setup. Maybe that's what it was. I also dreamt that it was sunny and warm, with just a gentle breeze.
[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker tempting fate
The Red-headed Woodpecker was again in my neighbor’s yard this weekend, sporting quite a bit of red now. This makes exactly four months since it showed up on November 22nd. It seems to have weathered Mother Nature’s worst. However, yesterday, with all the snow melt and its caches probably depleted, I saw it foraging for acorns on the ground near my neighbor’s porch. This will almost certainly be its death sentence as my neighbor’s cats are absolute killers. I’ll continue to report on any future sightings.
