RE: [old-chevy-truck] to restore or not to restore - just getting started
Yeah, we all ran into this conundrum at one time or the other. I decided on 12v upgrade because everything is 12v these days and its not good on the system to get a jump from a 12v battery if you are stuck somewhere. There is alot to doing that right, but for me it's worth it. You can get 12v motors to replace the heater, 12v ignition parts, sending units, etc. You can even get a Genernator so its upgraded to an alternator but looks totally stock. I decided I had a low limit of 70mph on the highway, so I swapped the rear end for a 1955 1st series. Almost bolts right up. If you get new leaf springs it will bolt right up. The only problem there is a custom length driveshaft. Not hard to find someone who does that. The other part of the equation is the transmission would need swapped too. I put a Borg R10 Overdrive (6 speed standard basically) in and that bolts right up too. I hear there is a 4 spd Muncie that does highway speeds too? I need more info on that because I have another project that needs it. (help) I really like the 235/261 6 cylinder. Its a workhorse and very easy to maintain. Dropping a V8 in this truck requires a special steering system and when I see a non-standard steering column in these old trucks, I just cringe. The 6 cylinder will do 70mph all day. Its just personal preference. If you still have a 216 motor in your truck, you will have to decide if you want to rebuild it. Finding someone who does babbiting may be hard but you can get insert bearings for it from Jim Carter. If it costs too much, swap a 1954 or newer 235 or even better 261. They bolt right in if you change the water pump. If you have two acorn nuts on the valve cover you have the older 216. You can find alot of this information on my website below. Other good places are stovebolt.com and inliners.org. Also, get catalogs right away from Classic Parts of America, Jim Carter, Bowtie Bits, Chevs of the 40's, Classic Industries, LMC Truck, Brothers Truck Parts. I am sure I forgot someone. what do you drool over at car/truck shows? stock or modified? i myself like an updated drive train, but i also drive my truck everywhere for 3 seasons of the year. a stock truck is a great attention getter, if you drive up to 3000 miles per year. i drive mine 8000 miles or more per year and set my 58 up for cruising but not for hauling but then i also added ac for comfort [image: Inline image 1] On Mon, Sep 2, 2013 at 2:29 PM, lyn.go...@gmail.com wrote: ** Ditto to Roy. I guess the basic question is Do you want a vintage truck or do you want a new truck that looks like a vintage truck?. I have it on good authority that, just like WWII vets, they won't be making any more. Ever. i realize this is a stock listserve, i read but rarely post, for i am a modifier. the best forum i've found for working on old chevy trucks is here 67-72chevytrucks.comhttp://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=13 the forum handles prewar to current model trucks, all in sub-forums by body style it has a very active 47-59 chevy truck sub-forum, probably over a hundred 47-59 builds active. trucks over there run the full spectrum from as found, bone stock restorations to full custom, like mine is. It's your truckdo as ya see fit. My dad bought his '57 new...went from a 6 to a 283 and the current 454/th400...got shiney chrome that Chevy didn't think of in the day...made lots of changes and it's still a '57 Chevy PU. Enjoy the truck...my suggestion? get it running, drive it and see what you want to change...might be a frame off or a new rubber grommet to keep wing from coming into the cab. I can't wait to walk over and take a closer look. The more original it looks, the more impressed I am. But if I see that it's been modernized, made less like it was originally, I feel a bit let down. If I talk to the owner and he tells me how he removed the good running 6 banger and replaced it with an 8, some of the air comes out of my balloon. That's just me, of course. But somehow the more it looks and sounds like it did in 1954 or thereabouts, the more romantic it feels and I get more of a glow just looking at it. If you DO swap out some of the original parts, at least consider making them available to those who are struggling to restore a modded truck back to it's original form Just how I feel about it. ...chico On Aug 31, 2013, at 8:35 PM, d...@kvederis.com wrote: I have a 54 Chevy 3 window. Re: [old-chevy-truck] to restore or not to restore - just getting started
Dave, You can buy all kinds of restored and modified trucks but the neat old original untouched versions are rare indeed. I made some changes to my truck, then made some more but am now moving backwards towards more original. 6 volts works just fine. I converted to 12 and went back. The sound the starter makes on 6 volts is just plain cool. The stomp starter gets lots of attention. My vacuum wipers draw lots of attention. Sure you can't go fast with the old 216 and the original gear train but people love waiting for you so they can watch it a bit longer. For safety I did upgrade my master cylinder to a dual resevoir type. I also added an auxillary standby 6 volt battery 'cause no one else can give you a jump if you need it. I built a bracket to hold an Optima battery and BOLTED it to the frame just back of the regular battery, then I ran a second wire from + to the starter. Then I got one of those battery disconnect thingies for the - side and I have a strap ready to connect should I ever need it. However, I haven't needed it so far. I check the charge on my spare battery often enough to know its good to go should I ever need it. Long answer to say keep it stock. Personally I am a keep it as original as possible type of person. We loose too much history daily to hot rod builders and scrap yards. It has made it this long like it is why ruin it now. Re: [old-chevy-truck] to restore or not to restore - just getting started
Dave I'm going to lean with the guys that say keep it original. There are a few things that you can do to make it more drivable while still maintaining the originality of the truck. Put radial tires on it - far improves the ride. Consider changing the rear end gear ratio to something along the lines of 3:55-1 for ease of highway driving. You might even go so far as converting to front disk brakes. Otherwise, keep 'er stock!! Re: [old-chevy-truck] to restore or not to restore - just getting started
From what I have seen, people tend to really appreciate an original, maintained unmolested truck the most because it has the story of it's life in it's appearance. As for your own personal preference, do you want to enjoy it's visual history, drive it a lot in some comfort or try to keep up with the Jonses with a better paint job, better everything, which never ends. Re: [old-chevy-truck] to restore or not to restore - just getting started
As for myself, when I see an old truck like yours parked somewhere, I get all excited. (I should add that invisible safety mods don't bother me at all.) If you DO swap out some of the original parts, at least consider making them available to those who are struggling to restore a modded truck back to it's original form Just how I feel about it. ...chico On Aug 31, 2013, at 8:35 PM, d...@kvederis.com wrote: I have a 54 Chevy 3 window.
