I just tried getting into your test server I think I may have found your
problem, When I test the hostname the files for my version of the staff client
are not found (version 1.4.0.4). Are you sure that you ran this as the root user
cd /home/opensrf/Evergreen-ILS-1.4.0.4
make STAFF_CLIENT_BUILD_ID=rel_1_4_0_4 install
cp /openils/conf/opensrf.xml.example /openils/conf/opensrf.xml

Try restarting the server once again and follow these instructions to start up
they work for me.

Switch to user postgres or your postgres users

Make Sure

ejabberd and memcached are running as the root user

sudo /etc/init.d/ejabberd start will tell you if the service is already running
do the same with memcached

Become the opensrf user

osrf_ctl.sh -l -a start_all

Become root restart apache

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Then see if it works.

Depending on how you installed postgreSQL I installed from source

[OPEN-ILS-DEV] Evergreen ISO Install

2009-06-18 Thread Ryan Laverdiere
I was wondering if there is an ISO install for evergreen since there is already
a vmware image I don't believe that an ISO install would be too hard to make if
there isn't already one. Even an automated install would be a big help. Every
time I have tried to install evergreen on ubuntu or debian there always seems
to be some type of problem that prevents me from getting evergreen running. An
automated install that would promt users for any user needed input would be
nice but an ISO would be nicer.

I am a simple user who is trying to setup evergreen for a small family
library system. It seems that in my research that verizon blocks port 80.
Can I change the http port of apache? Will evergreen still function if this
is done? Or is there a better solution?

  Hi Ryan,

There are actually two ports you need to work with, port 80 for HTTP
and port 443 for HTTPS. I tried remapping these ports in the past (I
think for you) and ran into difficulty. One thing you might try
doing, however, is running either a VPN or using SSH tunneling.

Client Machine A (extended family) - Firewall - Server
Machine B (your house) - Client Machine C (your house)

So if the problem is that Machine C can connect to Evergreen on
  Machine B, but Machine A can't because you can't host a port-80/443
service past the Verizon Firewall, then you could try running a ssh
server on your side of the firewall, and have Machine A ssh into that
server, and then tunnel Machine B's port 80/443 to Machine A such that
the client on machine A would point to localhost port 80/443, and
have it magically connect to Machine B instead.

Of course, ssh (port 22) might be blocked as well. You may have all
connection requests initiated from the outside blocked, with only

 Hello!

Totally new to Evergreen, I am trying to get it to run on Ubuntu. Started
with Edubuntu 7.10 install and carried out the steps as given in the
pre-install and install text files. Everything worked fine until step 27,
finalizing the OPAC, using the command:

 sudo -u opensrf ./autogen.sh /openils/conf/opensrf_core.xml

It gives 'Unable to connect to Jabber server' errors. The ejabber log file
has 'Accepted Connection' entries. Line 522 of the Client.pm belongs to
 this code segment:

if( $socket and $socket-connected() ) {
$self-{_socket} = $socket;

Shall appreciate help and advice. Sorry if I am on a beaten track. Did

Ah, it might be caused by that.

Did you run autogen.sh after modifying the branches? You have to run
this every time you change the organization hierarchy.

Do the depths assigned for each org_unit type match the depths to
which they've been assigned to the org_units in your tree? (For
example, if you have an org_unit of type Library that is a child of
another Library, your hierarchy is invalid because a given type of
org_unit can only have one valid depth - and search will fail as a
result).

This is the default behaviour for the OPAC in Evergreen; if there are
no copies, then the record is not visible in the OPAC. It should be
visible in the staff client, though.

If you want to have bib records that have no items attached show up in
the OPAC, you need to change the bib record source to something
transcendent. In the case of the VMWare image and a default
out-of-the-box Evergreen install, you could use source 3 - this is the
same source used for the Gutenberg records.

I can't remember off-hand if you can change the source value through
the staff client. But the guts of Evergreen way is documented at
http://open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=evergreen-admin:importing:bibrecordss=transcendant#making_electronic_resources_visible_in_the_catalogue.

If you leave the WHERE bib.record_id = ... clause off of the UPDATE
statement, you will make all of the records in your Evergreen instance
visible, whether or not they have copies attached.

Ah, sorry. When you said put in the barcode, I thought you meant
attach a copy in the cataloging interface.

I just gave this a test with a copy of the 1.2.2.2 VMWare image, and
the record was visible as soon as I added a copy in Holdings
Maintenance. I used the default location of Stacks for the copy
(which is an OPAC-visible location) and the default setting for OPAC
visibility.

Just to check, because it's not obvious the first few times through -
in the Holdings Maintenance screen, when you add a volume, after
entering a number in the # of Volumes field, you have to hit Tab to
be able to enter values in the Call number and # of Copies fields,
then hit Tab again to add barcodes for the items. It sounds like you
have gotten this far, though, if you actually can search by item
barcode.

Strange! Sorry, I'm not sure I can help you :(

What VMWare product are you using? Using VMWare Server, you should be
able to right-click on the vmware image in the VMWare Console (before

Note that you will want meed to retain some memory for your host

In my opinion, I would use Debian Etch. I wrote an shell script which
essentially automates the fine wiki instructions that Dan Scott and others
put together for installing things on Debian.

My script is updated to install the latest stable code that is available

 the web site.

I am happy to work with you for installing Evergreen, and have called up
people to actually step thru the installation if needed.

There are multiple ways to install Debian. Have you tried the latest
snapshots of the soon to be released version of Debian? There are
 multiple
ways to install Debian including floppy disks, flash, etc. The debian
documentation includes this information. You can always borrow a usb
 cdrom
and install debian from there, if you are looking for a path of least
 resistance.

[OPEN-ILS-DEV] Changing Evergreen Apache Ports

2008-04-14 Thread Ryan Laverdiere
Hi everyone I am now thinking of moving my library system to evergreen. The
only problem
I think we could have is that my ISP will not let me use port 80 for any
reason. So my question is is that can I change the apache ports and will
evergreen still work?

thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, just from testing this with SSH tunneling, it looks like it
would take some work to support this. I mapped my localhost port 8080
to port 80 on the demo.gapines.org server and found that some of the
CSS links show up as absolute http://localhost/ links without the
8080. You also have to contend with encryption via SSL, which uses
yet another port, 443 (https), and you might end up having to disable
encryption (for OPAC and staff client).

We have better luck with the slimpac (the alternate OPAC for screen
readers and mobile devices), which works fine on a different port.

 Hrmm. :-(

Hi Ryan:

You might want to try out the Evergreen Debian VMWare image. It's a
prebuilt version of Evergreen that runs in a virtual machine. Last
night I updated it to Evergreen 1.2.1.4, fixed a problem with
networking that might have affected some people, and included a set of
Gutenberg bibliographic records that you can use to populate the
database.

The instructions are here:

I have decided to try out the staff client and connect to the demo server
demo.gapines.org I then try to login as one of the listed users and then
you

have to register the work station it says you don't have permission to
register the work station.

Ryan, try one of these logins with admin in the name, like
arl-ath-demo-globaladmin

Those should have the required permission.

Hi Ryan:

Open /etc/apache2/sites-available/eg.conf in a text editor:

nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/eg.conf

Change Allow from 192. to Allow from all in the Directory
/openils/var/cgi-bin section to enable access to the cgi-bin
configuration scripts.

Then force apache to reload the config file:

/etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload

Now you should be able to load the config scripts in your browser at
the following address:

http://ip address/cgi-bin/config.cgi

Note that after you change branch names, add branches, etc., you'll
have to run autogen.sh to make the changes visible in the staff client
and the OPAC:

su - opensrf
autogen.sh /openils/conf/opensrf_core.xml

I'll make this the default setting in the image, even though it's an
insecure setting, because the VMWare image is after all just a demo
version of Evergreen.

[OPEN-ILS-DEV] Looking for a fully working copy of evergreen

2008-03-15 Thread Ryan Laverdiere
I have tried and tried to set up evergreen and have not been able to. I am
seeking a live cd of evergreen or even a vmware image. I don't really like

evergreen? I do to run my family wide library network. Why do I want evergreen
instead of koha i don't like koha.
