Oh! I forgot to mention that you'll need to set the --admin-user and
--admin-pass as well.

If so, is this the way to do it?

perl Open-ILS/src/support-scripts/eg_db_config \ --service all \ --user
 --password --hostname --port \
--database --load-all-sample Or ? Thanks, Jim.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Method for collection inventory

2016-07-13 Thread Rogan Hamby
There are a lot of inventory related reports that are easier to do in sql
than the reporter (if possible in the reporter at all) due to what they
need. Many of these would also be good for weeding also and I've built
them into the IDL in the past so that they could be more accessible to
staff.

Another thing inventory needs is a good way to batch upload and handle
items conditionally. Right now the staff doing it through the item status
screen is the best work around we have. Another process is to have staff
feeding barcodes in batches to someone with sql access and they're passing
reports back. That workflow can be more efficient but is also more
convoluted from a "what humans have to keep track of" angle and it may not
worth the gains so you're back to scanning things into the item status
screen. Honestly, development is really needed for a proper inventory
module*.

There have been proposals floated around for better inventory support but
they've so far lacked the critical momentum to get the funding gathered for
it.

* I hate calling functional areas in an ILS modules because that's a by
product of commercial ILSes separating things out artificially for
contractual purposes but it seems to have become a core part of library
terminology.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Ordering bibliographic & item records from vendors

2016-07-13 Thread Andrea Buntz Neiman

Hi Glen,

We go through Baker & Taylor's Customized Library Service -- their
catalogers are issued (limited) logins to our Evergreen system and they
catalog directly in Evergreen according to our established cataloging
policies.

Since most of what B does for us is copy-cataloging, I do imagine that
they use Vandelay to load the MARC records in batch. They then add
volumes (call #s) and item records according to the practices we've
established with them. We receive the items completely shelf-ready &
they just need a check-in at circ to be on their way.

They do obviously charge us for this service, but because we're pretty
small we find that it's well worth it to us to free up the staff time.
They do a decent job and are great about issuing credits on the rare
occasion they make a processing error.

Note that we do not use Acquisitions, but my understanding is that this
CLS service can be done as part of an EDI/Acquisitions process.

Let me know if you have any questions!

First, are you going through Vandelay, or using another method?

Second, how are you handling the call number records? Is the vendor
contributing those as well?

I know I could easily write a direct SQL query to show all non-deleted items
that don't have an in house use before an arbitrary date, in the past six
months, etc. I don't know if I could accomplish the same thing with the
Evergreen reports module, though, at least without adding to the IDL.

Hello Everyone

I was wondering if anyone has ever used In House Use reports for inventory
instead of Status Change Date? We use Status Change Date for weeding because we
don’t have circulation history past a year due to a recent migration. I can’t
get the In House Use reports to provide items that have not been used. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

Elizabeth

While they are PINES specific, there are generalities that may prove useful.

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Ordering bibliographic & item records from vendors

2016-07-13 Thread Donald Butterworth
Hi Glen,

We don't order our bib & item records from a vendor. Instead we use JTacq
freeware . First we use it to identify
the cheapest source to purchase a title from. We then use it to batch pull
permanent bib records from OCLC. JTacq is also used to generate and apply a
963 field(s) on each bib record. Our 963 tag contains subfields for all
item record data, including the call number. So if there is a call number
on the bib record, it will be duplicated in the 963 field.

Evergreen first requires the definition of a 9xx field so that it knows
what data to apply to what item record field. You must then define the 9xx
field for every single vendor that you purchase from.

Essentially the bib/item records JTacq supplies are identical to the ones
you purchase from a vendor, only way cheaper. The Evergreen import process
for JTacq supplied records and vendor supplied record are identical. We use
Vandelay for everything we purchase.

We routinely use these permanent bibs to populate a PO as part of the
import process. That means that when the title arrives in the library, it
is a very quick process to receive the item, make labels and send it out
the door to circulation.

Feel free to contact me, off list, if you want more specifics.

Don

Full Disclosure: I have given input to Jim Taylor for almost 2 decades as
he has developed JTacq. It is very robust, mature software. We couldn't
survive without it.
