[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Require password change on first OPAC login
Hi folks, I just became aware of what looks like a functionality change between 1.6 and 2.2. When we went live with our first Evergreen library on 1.6, patrons were required to change their passwords the first time they logged in to the OPAC. It looks like this is no longer the case; I've tested with new and newly migrated patrons in 2.2. The 1.6 documentation for the OPAC states, Patrons are given temporary passwords when new accounts are created, or forgotten passwords are reset by staff. Patrons MUST change their password to something more secure when they login or for [sic] the first time. Once the password is updated, they will not have to repeat this process for subsequent logins. (http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/1.6/draft/html/MyAccount.html). The documentation for this section has not been updated for the 2.x series. Is there a setting somewhere that we could turn on to re-enable this feature? I've dug through the in-client administrative settings, but haven't found any likely candidates. We would like to force our newly migrated library's patrons to change their passwords from the defaults set during conversion. Thanks! [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Standalone Pending Transactions
Hello folks, We asked a library to test standalone circulation in 2.2 last week. It went pretty well, however they are have one workstation that still shows the red box with Standalone Pending Transactions. I was unable to recreate this issue and asked for more details. The director further explained, In the bottom right quadrant of the Startup and Shutdown window titled Offline Use, the box that says Standalone Interface turns Red and says Standalone Pending Transactions. I cannot get that workstation to upload the transactions. I have done some searching on the Evergreen site and can't find reference to this error anywhere. Have you run into this before? If so, how did you solve it? Thanks for your help! Jenny Jennifer Turner | PALS, A Program of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities | 507-389-2000
Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Standalone Pending Transactions
Hi Aaron, Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, the transactions were uploaded and the directions for exporting/importing transactions were - as far as I know - followed. Any other ideas? If the transactions have not been uploaded, try using the export offline transactions function and then the import function on another computer. After you export, it will ask if you want to clear the transactions, tell it yes. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Standalone Pending Transactions
Thanks, again, Aaron. I had wondered about that possibility, but when I tried to recreate the issue by clicking “no” instead of “yes,” I still didn’t get the red box. In any case, I have asked the library to try Karen’s and your suggestions. If they fail, I will look into your manual deletion. Thanks everyone, for your swift suggestions! Unfortunately, the transactions were uploaded and the directions for exporting/importing transactions were - as far as I know - followed. Once they do the export, there is a popup that comes up and says: Your transactions have been exported to the file FILENAME. We strongly recommend that you now purge the transactions from this staff client. Would you like for us to do this? I would guess that they clicked no instead of yes in that popup as we have had several libraries do that. If they re-export, click yes and have the same issue, the file can be manually deleted with the following steps: 1. Login as the user who is having the issue 2. Go to %AppData%\OpenILS\open_ils_staff_client\Profiles\ 3. Open the profile folder (usually something like ja3rm3ja.DefaultUser) 4. Open the chrome folder 5. Find the pending_xacts file. 6. Delete it, rename it or whatever you prefer and that should eliminate the offline transactions warning. The [brief] minutes from last week's Reports meeting have been posted to the website: http://open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=evergreen-reports:taskforce_meetings#past_meetings. They are directly available here: http://evergreen-ils.org/meetings/evergreen/2012/evergreen.2012-06-21-14.31.html Although not apparent in the minutes, this meeting included a discussion of interested libraries pooling resources to develop ideas from the Evergreen Reports wish list, http://open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=evergreen-reports:taskforce_wish_lists, and what the task force might do to assist the process, keeping in mind that we don't actually have a Reports Task Force budget. A couple of ideas were tossed about, including volunteers from the task force working to solicit vendor quotes for development for the various wish list items. However, there was not a large enough group present to gain consensus on a plan at the meeting. If you have thoughts about how the Reports Task Force might proceed on this, please share these ideas on the Evergreen Reports list (evergreen-repo...@list.evergree-ils.orgmailto:evergreen-repo...@list.evergree-ils.org) or email me directly and I will summarize for the list. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Editing/deleting org units
If it is, indeed, possible to delete org units through the staff client, perhaps it is time to revise - or expand on - the documentation? The only documentation I could find was: http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/1.6/draft/html/serveradministration.html, which is from 1.6 and didn't seem to work for us on 2.2RC1. I am copying DIG on this message...perhaps there is more recent documentation, but I'm just not finding it. If someone has an update, I am sure DIG would be happy to include it in the 2.2 docs! Regarding single org unit set-up: while it is possible to set up a single-OU tree, the argument I found for leaving the Consortium in place is that it allows the ability to add other branches or libraries in the future. This is an older list conversation, but I believe it is still relevant: http://list.georgialibraries.org/pipermail/open-ils-dev/2009-January/004039.html. I don't know that we're expecting to gain new branches, but can imagine scenarios in which this might happen, so elected to leave it as a possibility, especially since the OPAC can be limited to search only the single library. That was my microphone, set up to capture the audio from the update sessions in the morning. I did make an announcement at the start of the Update from the Evergreen Oversight Board meeting that the sessions were being recorded, but there were many people who filed in after that point in time who might not have been aware that the session was being recorded. And, as the visioning exercise that Lori led went on, it's quite possible that people would have forgotten about the ongoing recording. So - while I would like to make the recordings available so that those who weren't there would be able to catch up, I'm hesitant to release the visioning exercise / discussion section of the Oversight Board meeting because I don't think we have explicit consent from everyone who participated. Therefore, I'm proposing that I upload the two update sessions, sans the intermediate discussion section. Can I get a +1/-1 on that? Thanks, Dan P.S. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Copy status for reference books?
Hi Linda, Our libraries had this problem, too. To work around it, they created separate volumes for reference copies. This allows the call number and location to display separately from the items in the general collection. The following is an example on our development system: http://ecrldev.mnpals.net/opac/en-US/skin/default/xml/rdetail.xml?r=146847t=free%20moneytp=titled=0hc=10rt=title I hope this helps! Mike, I forgot to mention that Jabok Library actually uses the reference flag but the problem is that the user only sees what is displayed in the OPAC and it seems that it is impossible for the user to distinguish between a copy which is a reference copy and a copy which is not. An example could be this book: http://www.jabok.cuni.cz/opac/en-US/skin/default/xml/rdetail.xml?r=11941t=soci%C3%A1ln%C3%AD%20v%20praxi%20matou%C5%A1ektp=keywordd=0hc=1rt=keyword and a copy with a barcode 424480018601 listed in copy location Odborná knihovna. The user sees that it is available. However, he or she does not see whether it is a reference copy or not... Linda Dne 16.1.2012 20:34, Mike Rylander napsal(a): 2012/1/16 Linda Jansova skolk...@chello.czmailto:skolk...@chello.cz: Hi, We have come across a probably more or less country-specific issue: In Jabok Library, reference books (i.e., books which cannot be checked out and can only be read in the library) don't share the same copy location (as often, though probably not always, do reference books in US libraries). Rather, the books in Jabok Library are dispersed throughout the library. A typical example would five copies of the book - four of them could be checked out and one of them could not be. All five copies would be physically located on the very same shelf - distinguished by a spine label so that the user immediately sees whether he or she is able to check out the particular copy. When it comes to Evergreen (we are currently using version 2.0.9), would you recommend creating a new copy status (in Server Administration - Copy statuses) entitled (in English) say Reference which would be visible in the OPAC and one could not place holds on it? What we need is to make it more visible for the user to see whether a particular copy is a usual copy which could be checked out whether it is a reference book... In case we use the copy status as indicated, we (and the users of course) can conveniently see the status below the record of the title... Or perhaps an entirely different solution would be better in this case? There's a Reference flag that can be set on a per-copy basis, and can be used to disallow holds and circulations. HTH,

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Hold Policy Configuration
Hello all, We have been trying to add complexity to our hold policy configuration for a couple of weeks now without luck. What we would like to see is the following: Most patron groups are limited to placing a maximum of 15 holds. Staff are unable to place unlimited holds FOR patrons. Some patron groups are exempt from the 15-hold policy (either unlimited or a higher limit). Staff would still be able to place unlimited holds for these groups. We had the 15-hold maximum working for the necessary patron groups in 1.6, though we are now on 2.0.6. How do we add in the staff exceptions? There is a requestor and a user - for the staff exceptions, which one should be set as staff and which one should be set as the patron group? I have tried both and can't seem to create the rule and exception - I either get 100% unlimited holds (patron-placed and staff-placed) or get the 15 hold limit for both staff- and patron-placed holds. Does anyone have similar hold policies working correctly? How do you have them set? Thanks! Jenny Jennifer Turner | PALS, A Program of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities | 507-389-2000

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Question about sharing a copy bucket
Hi Vicki, There really isn't a trick to making a bucket shared...all buckets created in Evergreen are assigned a number by the system. To retrieve a shared bucket, you have to know the number it has been assigned. Then (from the documentation: http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/1.6/draft/html/buckets.html): 1. Access the copy or record bucket management screen. 2. In drop down menu beside Choose a bucket... select Retrieve shared bucket. 3. Enter the desired bucket number and click OK. 4. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] [OPEN-ILS-DOCUMENTATION] Acquisitions and Serials Documentation Drafts Now Available
I like Robert's ideas: DocBook and DIG for feedback. The hope is that the Acquisitions. documentation would be included as part of the official documentation for 2.0: http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/2.0/draft/html/ I think it would be best to get the documentation into DocBook XML format which could then be processed in both HTML and PDF as part of the official documentation. Question: Would it be useful for me to post these on the wiki with the official draft of Acq documentation? I'm wondering if it would be useful to have a place to post info about procedures or potential workflows with the official documentation. I see these two types of documents very differently but both are equally important. And, is there a protocol in place for providing feedback on the draft documentation that is posted? Seems like publicly sharing our comments would be useful. I'm wondering if the documentation could be provided on a wiki and in wiki format instead of PDF? I'm thinking of the way Dan Scott put up the proposed rules of governance recently so we could all provide feedback. That would make all feedback visible and easier to keep track of for whomever gets to consolidate that feedback. Should we be having this discussion on the Documentation list too? Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Triggering holds
George, Could you elaborate on your response? We have found that holds do not trigger when fine thresholds are met (v. 1.6.0.6). Users are also blocked from placing new holds. Is there a way to allow existing holds to trigger while blocking the placement of new holds? Thanks! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen community calendar

I've written up brief instructions how to add a calendar and add an event to a given calendar here: http://evergreen-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=calendar:editing_the_community _calendar Jason seeded things with the Evergreen ILS Community Calendar, used for the Community IRC meetings, and I've added calendars for the Evergreen ILS Governance Committee and Evergreen ILS Developers. You can see the initial results of that at http://evergreen-ils.org/calendar - I was starting to worry about missing meetings, but now that I have added the pertinent calendars to my own calendar, I'm not worried any more :) I think it would be great to add calendars for the DIG, WIG, Communications Committee, Reports task force, etc. (It turns out that Karen Schneider had set up a similar community calendar year(s) ago but apparently almost nobody knew about it and it didn't get much use: that's Karen, always ahead of her time!) Oh, and a quick plan for making this calendar visible is to create a high-level Community page that would link in turn to the blog, planet, IRC, mailing lists, and now the calendar. And then I'll remove those links from our standard header and replace it with a Community link to the community page, with a whiz-bang drop-down menu for those who have JavaScript enabled. === Amy Terlaga Assistant Director, User Services Bibliomation 32 Crest Road Middlebury, CT 06762 (203)577-4070 x101 http://www.biblio.org Bibliomation's Open Source blog: http://biblio-os.blogspot.com/ Join us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=171935276419

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] [OPEN-ILS-DEV] Problems with login
Dimitri, In addition to Anoop's suggestion, also make sure that your new users have Working Locations associated with their accounts, as per Jason Etheridge's recent message to the general list: One missing piece to this is that most of the permissions that staff would have require that Working Locations be associated with the user to be effective. You do this through User Perm Editor (either from within the patron display or from the Admin menu). Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Documentation updates
Hello Robert and All, I've updated a number of sections of the Evergreen documentation. I found much of content including screen shots on SITKA's DocBook site. I hope they don't mind. I've tried to make it as generic as possible. I've updated the documentation outline page to reflect the content sources. I've been in contact with the folks at SITKA for the documentation I modified and generic-ified for training our library system and then submitted to the list. The share-and-share-alike licensing permits this, provided they receive attribution for their share of the work. I used the following statement: This documentation in based on that made available through SITKA Evergreen (http://sitka.bclibraries.ca/) and on the documentation available on the Evergreen website (http://evergreen-ils.org). Perhaps someone has a good idea of how a statement like this might be made apparent on the sections that are heavily reliant on one source? [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Cataloging workflows
Hello all, I am working with a regional library system to bring them live on Evergreen (from Sirsi). During our training sessions, the cataloging staff asked me what other libraries' cataloging workflows are like in Evergreen. Currently there is no way to auto-generate 'fake' item records for imported vendor files, as these catalogers are accustomed to doing (to allow holds on on-order items) - at least to my knowledge. Has anyone discovered a semi-smooth workflow for adding on-order titles and allowing these titles to be OPAC visible/holdable? Additionally, does anyone have a good workflow for adding items to batch-loaded records? Our first libraries go live this coming Monday - I think their knowledge of cataloging in Evergreen is firm enough to get them started, but any tips people have for smoothing out the cataloging process would be much appreciated by both me and the library staff!
