[OpenIndiana-discuss] Login timeout on failed login
Hi, Previously when I made a mistake typing my login password you would get an error and then you could re-enter your password. Since updating to SunOS 5.11 illumos-f5a3d331e8 on the 29th Nov, when entering an incorrect password no error is generated, the mouse still moves, the cancel and login buttons are available but can not be depressed. So after two minutes I rebooted my desktop and made sure I entered my password correctly. Has there been a change to the default behaviour or is this a bug? [OpenIndiana-discuss] Thunderbird 115.3.1
Good Afternoon I have noticed since upgrading to Thunderbird 115.3.1 the window decoration which allows me to switch to different Workspaces is not available. If I login using a different user, run xhost +local:, then su - as myself and then run thunderbird the workspace switcher option in the upper left hand corner of the window is available. So in order to have thunderbird appear on a particular workspace, I have to switch to that workspace and start it there. As anyone else notice this behaviour? Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problem with VirtualBox since upgrade today
Hi Stephan I ran "truss -leaf -o /tmp/truss.vb VirtualBox" to try an understand why my existing virtual machines are not detected then closed VirtualBox. Checking the truss.vb I found 275223 error messages types :- 13316 ENOENT 261610 EAGAIN 35 ESRCH 42 ENXIO 132 ETIME 38 ENOTTY 13 ENOMEM 8 EEXIST 6 EACCES 4 ECHILD 4 EPERM 3 ERESTART 4 EBADF 6 EINVAL 2 EINTR I also got to SIGSEGV segmentation faults 2432/1: siginfo: SIGSEGV SEGV_MAPERR addr=0x0008 2432/1: Received signal #11, SIGSEGV [default] 2432/1: siginfo: SIGSEGV SEGV_MAPERR addr=0x0008 Looking through the truss searching for my name I can see that VirtualBox correctly opened all my VirtualBox VMs .vbox files but was looking for /home/russell/.config/QtProject.conf found it, but had access issues checking my file I found it owned by root:root dated 23rd March 2021. I changed the permissions so I owned the file; started VirtualBox (no change in respect of virtual machines not appearing). However when I attempted to close VirtualBox I get the following error "Failed to set the global VirtualBox extra data for key GUI/LastWindowPosition to value { 2967,61,869,772}." and when I look at the details I get get the following Callee RC: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE) I have to pkill VirtualBox as I am unable to stop it via the GUI. Do you get something similar? Kind Regards Russell On 7/11/23 16:31, Stephan Althaus wrote: On 7/11/23 15:25, russell wrote: Good Afternoon Stephan I would advise against trying to build VirtualBox with gcc-7 due to the incompatibility between gcc-10 and gcc-7 libraries, which causes applications to crash or run incorrectly. Good Afternoon Stephan I would advise against trying to build VirtualBox with gcc-7 due to the incompatibility between gcc-10 and gcc-7 libraries, which causes applications to crash or run incorrectly. In one of my earlier update-tests i had a problem with the first OI-nvidia-525 version in cooperation with Virtualbox, so i had the idea to test this: I uninstalled 'userland-incorporation' and 'entire' as prerequisite to install nvidia version 515, now it boots! So, nvidia in the most recent version 525 stopped the boot process. (?) i checked with NVidia Solaris Driver Archive that my chipset (Quadro M1200) is on the supported list for this version: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/199661/en-us/ How/Why should the display driver be able to interrupt the boot process ? How/Why should the display driver be able to interrupt the boot process without further notice? That is something one can work out with debugger. But, this is binary only driver? Built *for Oracle Solaris 11.4*? With API interfaces changed inside Oracle Solaris? This means, the question is not ?if? but ?when? - it is only question of time when such drivers become unusable for us. Without gfx driver development, the desktop variant of illumos is dead end. without desktop, it would unfortunately mean the dead of illumos. If Oracle solaris drivers become unusable shouldn't illumos move to another driver interface that is maintained ? Maybe we wait until the cause for the problem is known before declaring everything dead ? It is a bit premature to declare everything dead, but, the fact is, we can not rely on binary only drivers forever. As soon as Oracle will decide to stop distributing Solaris, nvidia will have no reason to distribute those binary drivers. Note, we *still* do rely on few closed binaries to distribute illumos itself. rgds, toomas There was a feature request #8069 for AMDGPU support which is the latest open source AMD driver for AMD graphics cards, given how AMD has improved their CPUs and Graphics Cards under Lisa Su, would now be the time to consider adding better support for AMD cards. Hi Just activated the BE created on the 30th December 2022 and svc:/application/cups/scheduler:default is running and CUPS is accessible on http://127.0.0.1:631/, this is not the case on the BE created on the 1st January 2023. So from my perspective the issue is a result of the changes that took place between oihipster-20221203 NR / 165.18G static 2022-12-30 18:46 oihipster-20230101 - - 886.55M static 2023-01-01 12:31 Russell On 1/11/23 14:20, russell wrote: Good Afternoon I found out today that I could also not print, the svc:/application/cups/scheduler:default was in maintenance because it was restarting too fast. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Writing cdrom with Brasero fails everytime but works with cdrecord
Hi Due to some exceptional circumstances I had to write four cdroms for some server upgrades as they do not remote management licenses. After inserting a blank cdrom into my dvd drive, started Brasero and burn the iso image to the cdrom, it reported success but only offered cancel and eventually complained of an error which left the dvd drive unusable until the computer was restarted. Checking the cdrom I found it blank. I repeated burning the image but using cdrecord and it worked first time, after completing the remaining cdroms with cdrecord I tried again with Brasero and it had the exact same issues. Hi, Just inserted a USB flash drive into a USB 2.0 front port on my system, it automounted correctly which it did not when I last tried. Umounted the drive and then physically removed flash drive and desktop icon disappeared after around 3-5 seconds. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Browsing QNAP windows shares
Hi I have a Qnap NAS and configured NFS which is working fine when mounting on my OI desktop. However I do have a major problem when attempting to browse the Qnap via Network -> Windows Network When I configure on the Qnap Enable WINS Local Master Browser Enable WS-Discovery to help SMB Clients Highest SMB version -> SMB 3 Lowest SMB version -> SMB 1 Restrict anonymous users from accessing SMB shared folders -> Disabled Then it is possible to access the Qnap NAS with smb://nas and see all the shared folders with password access required to access a folder. I can also get a password prompt by using smb://nas/russell. A Linuxmint virtual machine can also access the Qnap NAS in the same way but it like OI can not browse to the NAS. When I change the Lowest SMB version to SMB 2, the OI can access the Qnap using smb://nas or smb://nas/russell while Linuxmint can not access smb://nas but can when smb://nas/russell is used. Similarly increasing the Lowest SMB version to SM2.1 and finally SMB 3 will produce similar results in that OI can not access the NAS but the Linuxmint virtual machine is able to access it when smb://nas/russell is used. Assuming that same Samba code is being used on OI and Linuxmint, do the OI defaults need to be adjusted? [OpenIndiana-discuss] GUI Performance - Update 3
Hi, As an experiment I changed my passwd file to use /export/home/russell instead of /home/russell which utilised the auto_home to mount /home/russell after login as a different user. Logout and then login as myself and everything worked but was noticeably faster. Rebooted and time the delay from the console login prompt to the appearance of the GUI login, this was now 48 seconds (however this includes the memory overclocking and CPU overclock to 4GHz). [OpenIndiana-discuss] GUI performance
Hi I have been wondering about the time it takes the GUI Login screen to appear on boot my computer and after logout to return to the GUI Login screen. This morning I decided to time this and the timings are pretty consistent. So from boot timing the display of the text login: prompt, the screen blanks and then the GUI Login appears takes on average 1 minute 54 seconds to appear. After logout from the GUI, timing from press of the Log out button to the GUI Login appearing takes on average 1 minute 50 seconds to appear. I have a Ryzen 5 5600X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus system board, Geforce 1650 PCI-e Gen 3 card, 64GB RAM, SSD ZFS boot pool and ZFS Raidz2 HDD home directory pool. How can speed up the appearance of the GUI login? Would overclocking the CPU help or buying the fast RAM significantly improve the performance? Is the Graphics Card the problem as it handling a 4K screen? However looking at the information in the Nvidia X Server Settings the graphics card is only peaking around 46% CPU utilisation. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Question about System Monitor
Hi, I am running Hipster 2021.04 with illumos-3f770aab81 and running System Monitor 1.24.2. System monitor is reporting Memory utilisation of 17.5GiB (27.5%) of 63.9GiB, however it is reporting 115.7MiB (0.7%) of 15.9GiB of swap it being used. I have always thought that swapping occurred when there is insufficient memory for an application so another application or pages of an application could be swapped to disk to free RAM. Given that there at least 32GB of RAM free, surely it would not need to page. $ vmstat 30 kthr memory page disk faults cpu r b w swap free re mf pi po fr de sr ro s0 s1 s2 in sy cs us sy id 0 0 0 68532576 60872200 33 244 41 0 0 0 55 8 4 4 -0 4516 11765 6689 1 0 99 0 0 0 49794916 48173452 1 431 344 0 0 0 0 49 23 25 0 18812 119079 53181 9 3 88 0 0 0 49782568 48159484 2 725 300 0 0 0 0 32 16 17 0 16908 121531 53655 10 3 87 0 0 0 49762892 48139892 0 754 218 0 0 0 0 33 17 17 0 20269 118644 52612 10 3 87 0 0 0 49735940 48112244 3 595 407 0 0 0 0 54 28 27 0 19599 119165 53390 10 3 87 0 0 0 49712360 48086132 2 476 244 0 0 0 0 37 19 19 0 19248 119117 53090 10 3 87 0 0 0 49692084 48064828 17 444 435 0 0 0 0 43 22 21 0 19950 119938 53753 10 3 87 While it is only around 100MB can I tweak the system to avoid paging when there is so much ram? Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] VirtualBox 6.1.18 nested vms
Hi Upon further investigation it is not the CPU or bios settings as hardware virtualisation is enabled it appears that while VirtualBox provide an environment to install ESX 6.7.0u3 (which works with AMD virtualisation) it does not expose enough functionality for the ESX instance to run a VM. At the office I have access to a Dual AMD Epyc 7302 server running ESX 6.7.0u3 and have run ESX 6.7.0 instances as VMs without a problem. The key Virtualisation difference between Epyc 7302 and Ryzen 5600 is the Secure Memory encryption (encrypt all memory with a common key when enabled in the bios is transparent to any operating system) and Secure Encrypted Virtualisation (encrypt each VM with its own key). The basic AMD-V while used by VirtualBox it does not appear to be exposed within the virtual machine so that ESX can use it. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Realtek RTL8125 Ethernet Card
Hi, As my current system already has a Realtek RTL8111/8168/84211 card built in and I needed a second interface a installed a Realtek RTL8125 card. In order to get it recognised I had add the entry to /etc/driver_aliases rge "pci10ec,8125" This allowed the interface to recognised but it autos to 100M full duplex while the built in operates at 1000M full duplex. Any suggestions on how to get it to operate at 1000M full duplex? [OpenIndiana-discuss] OpenIndiana-discuss] Filezilla 3.47.2.1 working
HI WxWidgets 3.1.X can not be used as it is a development release, you must build it with WxWidgets Stable Release 3.0.X as can be seen below, the previous stable release was 2.8.12 released in 2011. Replacing the default WxWidgets 2.8.12 (API stable since 2006) with 3.0.5 released in April 2020 (API stable since 2013) as detailed below https://www.wxwidgets.org/downloads/ Having the development release available is useful but Filezilla is coded to build using the stable release only. Hi My dual opteron motherboard finally died, so I had to build a new workstation based on a Ryzen 5 5600X. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster - Nvidia versions
Hi I have been able to use every Solaris Nvidia driver up to and including NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.27.04.run, however attempting to install NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.32.03.run or NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.39.run when in single user mode will cause a core dump. I initially attempted to install NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.32.03 on the 7th January and on the 18th February attempted to install NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.39.run. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster - fmadm
Hi After following John's advice, booted to single user mode, disabled Lightdm and then entered multi-user state everything was fine. I ran fmadm faulty and there was nothing recent, there was a reference to an old graphics card but not the current one. Looking in /var/adm/messages there is a reference to Mar 5 10:51:26 tesla savecore: [ID 570001 auth.error] reboot after panic: pcieb-2: PCI(-X) Express Fatal Error. (0x41) This I believe is a software issue as I can boot from Linux Mint 19.3, 20 and 20.1 livecd without any issues. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster
Hi, This evening I updated to the latest Hipster release and as normal I always create a new BE "pkg update -v --be-name oihipster-20210304" and reported as "OpenIndiana Hipster 2020.10 Version illumos-f2db47a16a 64-bit" After completing the update and rebooting, my desktop started with the new OI and as normal Lightdm failed to start first time around but unlike "OpenIndiana Hipster 2020.10 Version illumos-72973a2ec5 64-bit" which takes between 3 and 12 reboots to start Lightdm, things started to go downhill very fast. With the latest version of Hipster, system booted normally (as an aside it will always boot single user) , showed the Nvidia driver message, hostname and started the process of getting Lightdm. The screen goes blank, a white block appears in the upper left hand corner and then the systems restarts. On the second start up, the system reports vboxdrv error and starts a device reconfiguration and attempts to start Lightdm, blank screen, white block in the upper left hand corner and then reboot. As a result of the device reconfiguration, I booted single user and activated the previous BE and rebooted and it started Lightdm on the second attempt. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Nvidia Geforce 1650 and Driver Updates
Hi Just tried the NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.27.04.run and this worked without problem on my Dual Opteron 2435. The NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.38.run and NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.45.01.run drivers include security fixes for Intel CPUs which cause problems on AMD Opterons. When I perform a scanpci the following output is generated on the Geforce 1650 pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x10de device 0x1f82 NVIDIA Corporation TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650] pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x01: vendor 0x10de device 0x10fa NVIDIA Corporation Device unknown The pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x01: vendor 0x10de device 0x10fa is actually an Nvidia Audio device does this need to be included in /etc/driver_aliases? There is still an intermittant problem that is occuring stopping Lightdm from starting /var/log/lightdm# more lightdm.log.old (failed lightdm start) +0.00s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting Light Display Manager 1.30.0, UID=0 PID=761 [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /usr/local/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /etc/xdg/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loading configuration from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [+0.00s] DEBUG: Registered seat module local [+0.00s] DEBUG: Registered seat module xremote [+0.00s] DEBUG: Using D-Bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+0.01s] DEBUG: _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation local (GLocalVfs) for ‘gio-vfs’ [+0.02s] WARNING: Failed to get list of logind seats: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.login1 was not provided by any .service files [+0.02s] DEBUG: Adding default seat [+0.02s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Loading properties from config section Seat:* [+0.02s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Starting [+0.02s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Creating greeter session [+0.02s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Creating display server of type x [+0.02s] DEBUG: posix_spawn avoided (fd close requested) [+0.03s] DEBUG: Could not run plymouth --ping: Failed to execute child process “plymouth” (No such file or directory) [+0.03s] DEBUG: Using VT 7 [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Starting local X display on VT 7 [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Writing X server authority to /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Launching X Server [+0.03s] DEBUG: Launching process 765: /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Waiting for ready signal from X server :0 [+0.03s] DEBUG: Acquired bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+0.03s] DEBUG: Registering seat with bus path /org/freedesktop/DisplayManager/Seat0 [+0.04s] WARNING: Error getting user list from org.freedesktop.Accounts: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Accounts was not provided by any .service files [+0.04s] DEBUG: Loading user config from /etc/lightdm/users.conf [+0.09s] DEBUG: User russell added Successful Lightdm start # more lightdm.log [+0.01s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log [+0.01s] DEBUG: Starting Light Display Manager 1.30.0, UID=0 PID=763 [+0.01s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.01s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /usr/local/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.01s] DEBUG: Loading configuration dirs from /etc/xdg/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d [+0.01s] DEBUG: Loading configuration from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [+0.01s] DEBUG: Registered seat module local [+0.01s] DEBUG: Registered seat module xremote [+0.01s] DEBUG: Using D-Bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+0.02s] DEBUG: _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation local (GLocalVfs) for ‘gio-vfs’ [+0.02s] WARNING: Failed to get list of logind seats: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.login1 was not provided by any .service files [+0.03s] DEBUG: Adding default seat [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Loading properties from config section Seat:* [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Starting [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Creating greeter session [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Creating display server of type x [+0.03s] DEBUG: posix_spawn avoided (fd close requested) [+0.03s] DEBUG: Could not run plymouth --ping: Failed to execute child process “plymouth” (No such file or directory) [+0.03s] DEBUG: Using VT 7 [+0.03s] DEBUG: Seat seat0: Starting local X display on VT 7 [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Writing X server authority to /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Launching X Server [+0.03s] DEBUG: Launching process 768: /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch [+0.03s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Waiting for ready signal from X server :0 [+0.03s] DEBUG: Acquired bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+0.03s] DEBUG: Registering seat with bus path /org/freedesktop/DisplayManager/Seat0 [+0.04s] WARNING: Error getting user list from org.freedesktop.Accounts: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Accounts was not provided by any .service files [+0.04s] DEBUG: Loading user config from /etc/lightdm/users.conf [+0.12s] DEBUG: User russell added [+12.65s] DEBUG: Got signal 16 from process 768 [+12.65s] DEBUG: XServer 0: Got signal from X server :0
[OpenIndiana-discuss] Lightdm working Geforce GTX1650
Hi, Yesterday, after performing a "pkg update -v --be-name" I swapped in the Geforce GTX1650 (replacing the Geforrce 750Ti) in with the NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run driver and it worked. After getting it working I downloaded the latest driver NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.38.run and applied it before making a new BE. The new driver successfully removed the old NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run driver but caused a core dump when attempting to install its self, leaving BE unbootable even in single user mode. So deleted the problem BE and created a new BE and got the NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run installed so Lightdm is working correctly.
