[OpenIndiana-discuss] Login timeout on failed login

2023-12-05 Thread russell

Hi,

Previously when I made a mistake typing my login password you would get
an error and then you could re-enter your password.
Since updating to SunOS 5.11 illumos-f5a3d331e8 on the 29th Nov, when
entering an incorrect password no error is generated, the mouse still
moves, the cancel and login buttons are available but can not be
depressed. So after two minutes I rebooted my desktop and made sure I
entered my password correctly.

Has there been a change to the default behaviour or is this a bug?

TIA

[OpenIndiana-discuss] pkg update this morning resulted in svc-dbus error 95

2023-11-24 Thread russell

Good Morning

Performed an update this morning to create a new BE.

oihipster-20231103 -  -  2.76G static 2023-11-25 06:00

Upon rebooting the svc-dbus service failed with code 95 which resulted
in the GUI not being available as the nvidia module was unloaded.

Did not investigate further as I have out of hours work to complete.

Thanks for the feedback on Audacity, this explains why Ardour is become

Not sure if the dependencies for Ardour are worse than for Audacity

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Thunderbird 115.3.1

2023-10-13 Thread russell

Good Afternoon

I have noticed since upgrading to Thunderbird 115.3.1 the window
decoration which allows me to switch to different Workspaces is not
available.
If I login using a different user, run xhost +local:, then su - as
myself and then run thunderbird the workspace switcher option in the
upper left hand corner of the window is available. So in order to have
thunderbird appear on a particular workspace, I have to switch to that
workspace and start it there.

As anyone else notice this behaviour?

2023-07-12 Thread russell

Hi Carsten

I can see in the truss I shared with Stephan that VirtualBox does in
fact identify all the VMs as it lists opening the .vbox files per VM.

This is also works with VBoxManage list vms.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problem with VirtualBox since upgrade today

2023-07-11 Thread russell

Hi Stephan

I ran "truss -leaf -o /tmp/truss.vb VirtualBox" to try an understand why
my existing virtual machines are not detected then closed VirtualBox.
Checking the truss.vb I found 275223 error messages types :-

   13316  ENOENT  261610  EAGAIN  35  ESRCH
 42  ENXIO    132  ETIME  38  ENOTTY
 13  ENOMEM    8  EEXIST    6
EACCES    4  ECHILD    4  EPERM
3  ERESTART    4  EBADF    6  EINVAL
   2  EINTR

I also got to SIGSEGV segmentation faults

2432/1:   siginfo: SIGSEGV SEGV_MAPERR addr=0x0008
2432/1: Received signal #11, SIGSEGV [default]
2432/1:   siginfo: SIGSEGV SEGV_MAPERR addr=0x0008

Looking through the truss searching for my name I can see that
VirtualBox correctly opened all my VirtualBox VMs  .vbox
files but was looking for /home/russell/.config/QtProject.conf found it,
but had access issues checking my file I found it owned by root:root
dated 23rd March 2021. I changed the permissions so I owned the file;
started VirtualBox (no change in respect of virtual machines not
appearing). However when I attempted to close VirtualBox I get the
following error "Failed to set the global VirtualBox extra data for key
GUI/LastWindowPosition to value { 2967,61,869,772}." and when I look at
the details I get get the following Callee RC:

NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

I have to pkill VirtualBox as I am unable to stop it via the GUI.

Do you get something similar?

Kind Regards

Russell

Hi Russell!

Ok sounds reasonable :-)

What are our next steps to get it working again?

Truss output from the new BV-build sounds weird (see below), but the
working one in the old BE does the same for gcc/10

So where can we start solving this?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problem with VirtualBox since upgrade today

Hi

Just performed a pkg refresh & pkg update -v --be-name and found
that VirtualBox is broken as it does not clearly identify which 6.1
release it is and it does not see the existing virtual machines; so I
rolled back to the previous BE.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems with gcc-7 and gcc-10 built binaries

2023-05-21 Thread russell

Hi

Back in October 2022, when I was experiencing issues building
libfilezilla in response to my posting Till pointed out that gcc-7 and
gcc-10 have an ABI break.

Hi Russel

Thats an ABI break.

Looks like Gcc7 and Gcc10 produce different output.

You will have to compile all with the same compiler.

So, are there plans to switch to using gcc-10 for the entire build of
OpenIndiana to eliminate the ABI compatibility issue of mixing gcc-7 and
gcc-10?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] mate system monitor does not work any, more on recent versions of openindiana

2023-04-19 Thread russell

Hi Marc

When I run /usr/bin/mate-system-monitor the executable aborts.
On a hunch I performed an ldd /usr/bin/mate-system-monitor and found
that like the non working screensavers see
(https://www.illumos.org/issues/15138) which abort or fail to display
and are all linked to gcc7.

$  ldd /usr/bin/mate-system-monitor | grep gcc
    libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/gcc/7/lib/amd64/libstdc++.so.6
    libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/gcc/7/lib/amd64/libgcc_s.so.1
    libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/gcc/10/lib/amd64/libstdc++.so.6
    libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/gcc/10/lib/amd64/libgcc_s.so.1

If the screensavers and mate-system-monitor is just linked to gcc 10 I
believe it should fix the issue

Hope that helps

Instead of the video I get Firefox "Your browser can't play this video",

Is any one else experiencing this issue?

Hello!

In one of my earlier update-tests i had a problem with the first OI-nvidia-525
version in cooperation with Virtualbox,
so i had the idea to test this:

I uninstalled 'userland-incorporation' and 'entire' as prerequisite to install
nvidia version 515,
now it boots!

So, nvidia in the most recent version 525 stopped the boot process. (?)

i checked with NVidia Solaris Driver Archive that my chipset (Quadro M1200) is
on the supported list for this version:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/199661/en-us/

How/Why should the display driver be able to interrupt the boot process ?
How/Why should the display driver be able to interrupt the boot process without
further notice?

That is something one can work out with debugger. But, this is binary only
driver? Built *for Oracle Solaris 11.4*? With API interfaces changed inside
Oracle Solaris? This means, the question is not ?if? but ?when? - it is only
question of time when such drivers become unusable for us. Without gfx driver
development, the desktop variant of illumos is dead end.

without desktop, it would unfortunately mean the dead of illumos. If Oracle
solaris drivers become unusable shouldn't illumos move to another driver
interface that is maintained ?

Maybe we wait until the cause for the problem is known before
declaring everything dead ?

It is a bit premature to declare everything dead, but, the fact is, we
can not rely on binary only drivers forever. As soon as Oracle will
decide to stop distributing Solaris, nvidia will have no reason to
distribute those binary drivers. Note, we *still* do rely on few closed
binaries to distribute illumos itself.

 rgds,

toomas

There was a feature request #8069 for AMDGPU support which is the latest
open source AMD driver for AMD graphics cards, given how AMD has
improved their CPUs and Graphics Cards under Lisa Su, would now be the
time to consider adding better support for AMD cards.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] screensave failure to display GL screensavers

2023-01-30 Thread russell

Hi

As I am currently running the nvidia-470 driver, I wondered if
downgrading to nvida-390 using the method list below would resolve the issue

|#beadm create nvidia-390 #beadm mount nvidia-390 /tmp/nvidia-390 #pkg
-R /tmp/nvidia-390 uninstall nvidia-470 #pkg -R /tmp/nvidia-390 install
nvidia-390 #beadm activate nvidia-390 #init 6 |

||

Unfortunately while the driver downgrade worked, lightdm goes into
maintenance so can not check if this has fixed the issue.

Any suggestions on how to proceed to get lightdm working

Hi

Just activated the BE created on the 30th December 2022 and
svc:/application/cups/scheduler:default is running and CUPS is
accessible on http://127.0.0.1:631/, this is not the case on the BE
created on the 1st January 2023. So from my perspective the issue is a
result of the changes that took place between

I tried. The core is not that of cupsd but that of cups-browsed, and
this did not crash but was killed by sigkill

Then I looked at the startup script of the service
(/lib/svc/method/svc-cupsd) and this one starts gutenprint and then
/usr/sbin/cupsd.

If I try to start cupsd manually, it works and does not stop. It prints?
the test page, although with a message "filter failed" on the cups web
page. If configured for black and white, the printing is OK, in colors,
the black is purple, but my printer is an old brother MFC9330-CDW
emulating a hp printer. However, when I print from a windows machine,
the colors are OK.

I had the color problem before, but the service did not crash: thus its
probably anothe problem

Then I discovered that I had , in the svcs list, a legacy server
"cups-browsed" surviving from an old release:

removing the legacy service on /etc/rc3.d has apparently for result
that, on reboot, the cups service is running, but it crashes as soon as
I try to print something.

If restart cupsd manually (/usr/sbin/cupsd), it starts and prints the
jobs remaining in the queue (all are marked :stopped filter failed)

There is apparently no new core file (I checked running "updatedb;

The only difference between starting cupsd manually or as a service is
that, as a sevice, the gutenprint command is run before starting cupsd

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] warning message

Hi

The way I eliminated this message was to

zpool remove rpool1 c4t1d0s1
zpool remove rpool1 c4t3d0s1

and then re-added them

zpool add rpool1 spare c4t1d0s1 c4t3d0s1

What I found interesting is that I have three zpools each with two spare
devices but only rpool1 had the issue.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Writing cdrom with Brasero fails everytime but works with cdrecord

2022-12-06 Thread russell

Hi

Due to some exceptional circumstances I had to write four cdroms for
some server upgrades as they do not remote management licenses.
After inserting a blank cdrom into my dvd drive, started Brasero and
burn the iso image to the cdrom, it reported success but only offered
cancel and eventually complained of an error which left the dvd drive
unusable until the computer was restarted. Checking the cdrom I found it
blank.

I repeated burning the image but using cdrecord and it worked first
time, after completing the remaining cdroms with cdrecord I tried again
with Brasero and it had the exact same issues.

HI Predrag

I performed a truss, see attached

When I moved /usr/lib/xscreensaver/hacks then ran

$ truss -leaf -o /tmp/glknots.truss ./glknots

A display window appeared but it was completely blank, eventually I
closed the windows.

Kind Regards

Russell

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Screensaver issues

2022-09-23 Thread russell

Hi

I updated to the latest OI release on 19th September though I had
noticed a new build of the screensaver had been included for a while but
have not being using the Screensaver until today when I noticed that my
normal slideshow of astronomy pictures were not appearing as the screen
just blanks. When I checked the Advanced settings Image Manipulation ->
Choose Random Image: /home/russell/astro was selected as before.

I have checked that the xscreensaver is installed

# pkg list | grep screensaver
desktop/xscreensaver 6.4-2022.0.0.2 i--
desktop/xscreensaver/hacks 6.4-2022.0.0.2 i--
desktop/xscreensaver/hacks/hacks-gl 6.4-2022.0.0.2 i--
desktop/xscreensaver/hacks/rss-glx 0.91-2022.0.0.3    i--

Is anyone else having a similar problem?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] svc:/system/intrd:default in maintenance

2022-08-20 Thread russell

Hi,

I have noticed that svc:/system/intrd:default in maintenance again,
checking /var/svc/log/*intrd* I have found that it started on 30th June
this year

[ Jun 30 15:22:13 Method "start" exited with status 0. ]
Can't locate Sun/Solaris/Kstat.pm in @INC (you may need to install the
Sun::Solaris::Kstat module) (@INC contains:

/usr/perl5/5.34/lib/i86pc-solaris-thread-multi-64 /usr/perl5/5.34/lib)
at /usr/lib/intrd line 66.

[ Jun 30 15:22:13 Stopping because all processes in service exited. ]
[ Jun 30 15:22:13 Executing stop method (:kill). ]

Was fixed in result of a posting advising

pkg set-mediator -v --no-backup-be -V 5.22 system-perl
svcadm clear svc:/system/intrd:default

This did fix the issue but on the 3rd July it started again. I did
notice the boot error message as I power on my system and then left to
return after the GUI had started.

[ Jul  3 13:01:30 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/svc-intrd"). ]

I retried the fix provided before but this did not work.

I have checked the contents /usr/perl5/site_perl/ which includes
directories 5.22, 5.24, 5.34 each directory is empty apart from a single
subdirectory which is also empty.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] VLC 3.0.16

2022-08-01 Thread russell

Hi

I have previously used to VLC to convert video/audio MP4 files into a
MP3 file.
This has previously worked but I have noticed that when I try this now
it generates an mp3 file of zero length

Has VLC been built without cd-audio?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problem with Audio in Firefox

2022-07-26 Thread russell

HI

When I perform an update I always create a new BE.
I performed a update on the 2022-07-03 and audio playback in Firefox was
fine.
On the 2022-07-20 I performed an update, while VLC played audio okay,
Firefox would not play  Youtube audio.
I tried further updates on the 2022-07-23 and 2022-07-25 audio playback
via Firefox was still broken but VLC was fine.

Has anyone else experienced this?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Filezilla update

2022-07-04 Thread russell

Hi

I found that libfilezilla 0.24 would build cleanly

To Build libfilezilla 0.24.

export PATH=/usr/gnu/bin:$PATH

edit lib/string.cpp replace wcsnrtombs with std::wcsnrtombs

CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/iso -I/opt/gnu/include
-fpermissive" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib/64 -L/opt/gnu/lib"
CPP=cpp CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/gnu/include -I/usr/include -I/opt/gnu/include"
CC=gcc CFLAGS="-m64"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib/64/pkgconfig"
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --disable-static --enable-shared

$ gmake
# gmake install

Once libfilezilla 0.24 was built I was able to build Filezilla 3.49.1
Building filezilla-3.47.2.1

export PATH=/usr/gnu/bin:/opt/gnu/bin:$PATH

CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml-1.9 -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla -fpermissive" CPP=cpp CC=gcc
CFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml-1.9 -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib/64/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH"
LDFLAGS="-m64 -L/usr/lib -L/usr/lib/pugixml-1.9 -L/opt/gnu/lib"
LT_SYS_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" ./configure
--prefix=/opt/gnu --enable-shared --disable-static
--with-pugixml=builtin --disable-dependency-tracking

$ gmake
# gmake install

When I tried to build libfilezilla 0.25 or later it generated a
compilation issue with the cpp, similarly when I attempted to build
filezilla 3.50 or later it generated a compilation issue with the cpp.

Not sure if changing to using gcc 10 will fix the compilation issues

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Building GnuTLS 3.7.6 update

2022-07-01 Thread russell

Hi

By not building the Guile bindings the GnuTLS does build successfully.

CC=gcc CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS=-m64 CFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn
-I/usr/include/idn2 -I/usr/include -I/opt/gnu/include"
LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib"

--disable-dependency-tracking
--with-unbound-root-key-file=/opt/gnu/etc/unbound/root.key

I am running Guile 2.2.7 from the standard packages and the latest is 3.0.8.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Successfully built Filezilla 3.47.2.1 on illumos-99e2a6f8e9

2022-06-30 Thread russell

Hi

I managed to build Filezilla 3.47.2.1 using mostly standard libraries
and gcc 7.5.0

To Build libfilezilla 2.20 prior to building Filezilla 3.47.2.1

PATH=/usr/gnu/bin:$PATH

edit lib/string.cpp replace wcsnrtombs with std::wcsnrtombs

$ CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/iso -I/opt/gnu/include
-fpermissive" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib/64 -L/opt/gnu/lib"
CPP=cpp CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/gnu/include -I/usr/include -I/opt/gnu/include"
CC=gcc CFLAGS="-m64"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib/64/pkgconfig"
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --disable-static --enable-shared

$ gmake
# gmake install

As you can build filezilla using the development version of wx-widgets,
I built wx-3.0.5 stable release

To Build wx-3.0.5

$ CC=gcc CFLAGS=-m64 CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -fpermissive" LDFLAGS=-m64
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --enable-printfposparam --without-motif
--with-gtk

$ gmake
# gmake install

Using the libfilezilla 3.47.2.1 and wx-widgets 3.0.5, build requires
/usr/gnu/bin/xgettext to process locales correctly and
/opt/gnu/bin/wx-config

export PATH=/opt/gnu/bin:/opt/gnu/bin:$PATH

$ CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml-1.9 -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla -fpermissive" CPP=cpp CC=gcc
CFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml-1.9 -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib/64/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH"

[OpenIndiana-discuss] USB automounting working

2022-06-09 Thread russell

Hi,

Just inserted a USB flash drive into a USB 2.0 front port on my system,
it automounted correctly which it did not when I last tried.
Umounted the drive and then physically removed flash drive and desktop
icon disappeared after around 3-5 seconds.

Repeated the same test but using a USB 3.0 front port and it worked
correctly again which is fantastic.

Currently running illumos-b0d58672df  from an update on the 1st June.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Browsing QNAP windows shares

2022-03-24 Thread russell

Hi

I have a Qnap NAS and configured NFS which is working fine when mounting
on my OI desktop.
However I do have a major problem when attempting to browse the Qnap via
Network -> Windows Network

When I configure on the Qnap

Enable WINS
Local Master Browser
Enable WS-Discovery to help SMB Clients
 Highest SMB version -> SMB 3
 Lowest SMB version  -> SMB 1

Restrict anonymous users from accessing SMB shared folders -> Disabled

Then it is possible to access the Qnap NAS with smb://nas and see all
the shared folders with password access required to access a folder. I
can also get a password prompt by using smb://nas/russell. A Linuxmint
virtual machine can also access the Qnap NAS in the same way but it like
OI can not browse to the NAS.

When I change the Lowest SMB version to SMB 2, the OI can access the
Qnap using smb://nas or smb://nas/russell while Linuxmint can not access
smb://nas but can when smb://nas/russell is used.

Similarly increasing the Lowest SMB version to SM2.1 and finally SMB 3
will produce similar results in that OI can not access the NAS but the
Linuxmint virtual machine is able to access it when smb://nas/russell is
used.

Assuming that same Samba code is being used on OI and Linuxmint, do the
OI defaults need to be adjusted?

Best Regards

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Future of PostgreSQL on OpenIndiana

2022-02-26 Thread russell

Hi

Having checked the PostgreSQL Source list which includes version
10,11,12,13 and 14.
Upgrading to to version 10 does not appear to a big enough version
update but this may have a smaller list of dependencies which need to be
addressed.  Ultimately what are the dependencies by upgrading to version
12.10 for example and the consequences on other packages?

Could this completed as part of an OpenIndiana 04/22 release?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] After upgrade and problem with VirtualBox 6.1.28

2021-11-21 Thread russell

Hi

Upgraded to latest OI Hipster release on Saturday 20th Nov morning (UTC)
but did not start using until today.
When I tried to start my VMs using SATA interfaces, I noticed that
number of Ports had increased from 2 to 3 and hard drive was no longer
accessible.

VMs I have configured to boot from an ISO and have no hard drive appear
to boot normal but they are configured to use IDE.

Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

In the meantime I have reverted to the previous boot image.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] USB flash drives

Good Afternoon

When I insert a USB flash drive, the system detects and reports its
presence as can be seen from "dmesg"

However the drive is not automatically mounted.

I can manually mount the USB flash drive by using "rmformat -l" to
identify the device

I can then use "mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c7t0d0p1 ", note
that the I have to use the none raw device and use drive partition 1 not
partition 0.

The other thing I find that is that I can get the following and when
this occurs the usb device is not accessible.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] GUI Performance - Update 3

2021-09-07 Thread russell

Hi,

As an experiment I changed my passwd file to use /export/home/russell
instead of /home/russell which utilised the auto_home to mount
/home/russell after login as a different user.
Logout and then login as myself and everything worked but was noticeably
faster.
Rebooted and time the delay from the console login prompt to the
appearance of the GUI login, this was now 48 seconds (however this
includes the memory overclocking and CPU overclock to 4GHz).

In terms of resolver, my desktop is its own resolver but can talk to
four other internal DNS resolvers which operate 24x7.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] GUI performance (updated)

2021-09-06 Thread russell

Hi

Over the weekend I tried overclocking the RAM on my computer which
resulted in a 10 second reduction in login time.
I tried overclocking the CPU from the stock 3.7GHz to 4.65GHz but the
system kept locking up.
I have a LSI MegaRAID SAS 2008 Raid Controller PCI-e card configured so
it handles drives as just a bunch of disks.
I have eight Seagate IronWolf 7200RPM 8TB drives in a single ZFS RaidZ2
configuration not sure how to speed this up.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] GUI performance

2021-09-04 Thread russell

Hi

I have been wondering about the time it takes the GUI Login screen to
appear on boot my computer and after logout to return to the GUI Login
screen.

This morning I decided to time this and the timings are pretty consistent.

So from boot timing the display of the text login: prompt, the screen
blanks and then the GUI Login appears takes on average 1 minute 54
seconds to appear.

After logout from the GUI, timing from press of the Log out button to
the GUI Login appearing takes on average 1 minute 50 seconds to appear.

I have a Ryzen 5 5600X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus system board, Geforce
1650 PCI-e Gen 3 card,  64GB RAM, SSD ZFS boot pool and ZFS Raidz2 HDD
home directory pool.

How can speed up the appearance of the GUI login?

Would overclocking the CPU help or buying the fast RAM significantly
improve the performance?
Is the Graphics Card the problem as it handling a 4K screen? However
looking at the information in the Nvidia X Server Settings the graphics
card is only peaking around 46% CPU utilisation.

TIA

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Question about System Monitor

2021-07-08 Thread russell

Hi,

I am running Hipster 2021.04 with illumos-3f770aab81 and running System
Monitor 1.24.2.
System monitor is reporting Memory utilisation of 17.5GiB (27.5%) of
63.9GiB, however it is reporting 115.7MiB (0.7%) of 15.9GiB of swap it
being used.
I have always thought that swapping occurred when there is insufficient
memory for an application so another application or pages of an
application could be swapped to disk to free RAM.
Given that there at least 32GB of RAM free, surely it would not need to
page.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] raidz vdev expansion

2021-06-15 Thread russell

Hi

The arstechnica article they cover the a openzfs raidz vdev expansion
which is functionality I would like to use as I want to expand a raidz2
vdev from 6 to 8 drives.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/06/raidz-expansion-code-lands-in-openzfs-master/

Can this be achieved currently in OI zfs implementation?

TIA

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] VirtualBox 6.1.18 nested vms

2021-04-28 Thread russell

Hi

Upon further investigation it is not the CPU or bios settings as
hardware virtualisation is enabled it appears that while VirtualBox
provide an environment  to install ESX 6.7.0u3 (which works with AMD
virtualisation) it does not expose enough functionality for the ESX
instance to run a VM. At the office I have access to a Dual AMD Epyc
7302 server running ESX 6.7.0u3 and have run ESX 6.7.0 instances as VMs
without a problem. The key Virtualisation difference between Epyc 7302
and Ryzen 5600 is the Secure Memory encryption (encrypt all memory with
a common key when enabled in the bios is transparent to any operating
system) and Secure Encrypted Virtualisation (encrypt each VM with its
own key).

The basic AMD-V while used by VirtualBox it does not appear to be
exposed within the virtual machine so that ESX can use it.

Thanks

Russell

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Realtek RTL8125 Ethernet Card

2021-04-16 Thread russell

Hi,

As my current system already has a Realtek RTL8111/8168/84211 card built
in and I needed a second interface a installed a Realtek RTL8125 card.
In order to get it recognised I had add the entry to /etc/driver_aliases

rge "pci10ec,8125"

This allowed the interface to recognised but it autos to 100M full
duplex while the built in operates at 1000M full duplex.

Any suggestions on how to get it to operate at 1000M full duplex?

TIA

[OpenIndiana-discuss] OpenIndiana-discuss] Filezilla 3.47.2.1 working

2021-04-03 Thread russell

HI

WxWidgets 3.1.X can not be used as it is a development release, you must
build it with WxWidgets Stable Release 3.0.X as can be seen below, the
previous stable release was 2.8.12 released in 2011.

Replacing the default WxWidgets 2.8.12 (API stable since 2006) with
3.0.5 released in April 2020 (API stable since 2013) as detailed below

https://www.wxwidgets.org/downloads/

Having the development release available is useful but Filezilla is
coded to build using the stable release only.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Filezilla 3.47.2.1 working

2021-04-02 Thread russell

Hi

Just to let you know I have managed to build Filezilla 3.47.2.1 (depends
on libfilezilla 0.20.2) and it works. Unfortunately it is not the latest
which is Filezilla 3.53.1 but this depends on libfilezilla 0.27.0 or
later which generate C++ errors and this was built with the default gcc
7.5.0 compiler

Environment  requirements for all builds

$ export PATH=/opt/gnu/bin:$PATH   (you must use the gnu xgettext)

+++ To build Libfilezilla 0.20.2 +++

# pkg install pkg-config gnu-gettext doxygen

edit lib/string.cpp replace wcsnrtombs with std::wcsnrtombs

$ CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/gmp -fpermissive" CPP=cpp CC=gcc
CFLAGS="-m64"  ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --disable-static
--enable-shared

$ gmake

# gmake install

+++ To build Libfilezilla 0.20.2 +++

The standard version of wxwidgets 2.8.12 which is provided with
OpenIndiana is too old to be used so I downloaded and built WxWidgets
3.0.5, also you can not use a later development release

Not how difficult it would be bump the WxWidgets from 2.8.12 to 3.0.5

+++ To build WxWidgets 3.0.5 +++

$ CC=gcc CFLAGS=-m64 CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -fpermissive" LDFLAGS="-m64
-L/opt/gnu/lib"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH"
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --with-gtk=2 --enable-ipv6

$ gmake

# gmake install

+++ To build WxWidgets 3.0.5 +++

+++ To build Filezilla 3.47.2.1 +++

$ CXX=g++ CXXFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla -fpermissive" CPP=cpp CC=gcc
CFLAGS="-m64 -I/usr/include/idn -I/usr/include/idn2
-I/usr/include/pugixml -I/opt/gnu/include
-I/opt/gnu/include/libfilezilla"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gnu/lib/64/pkgconfig:/opt/gnu/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/64/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH"
LDFLAGS="-m64 -L/usr/lib -L/usr/lib/pugixml -L/opt/gnu/lib/64
-L/opt/gnu/lib" ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnu --enable-shared
--disable-static --with-pugixml=builtin --disable-dependency-tracking
--with-wx-prefix=/opt/gnu

$ gmake

# gmake install

+++ To build Filezilla 3.47.2.1 +++

In order to allow the filezilla executable you must have

$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/gnu/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

then you can run assuming you have /opt/gnu/bin in your PATH

$ filezilla

and Nested Pages enable, can these be exposed to VMware so that the
Nested Paging is exposed in the VM to the ESX server?

Hi

I have noticed that since replacing my workstation I am now getting a

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Fresh install of OpenIndiana - can, , not upgrade nvidia from nvidia-390 to nvidia-460

2021-03-24 Thread russell

HI

Thanks adding  fixes below got VirtualBox working without error

# echo "set  hma_disable = 1" > /etc/system.d/hma

# echo "set disable_smap =1" > /etc/system.d/smap

I tried looking for the tweaks to get VirtualBox running using various
search engines but could not find them.

Should not these fixes for VirtualBox be included on the Wiki

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Fresh install of OpenIndiana - can, not upgrade nvidia from nvidia-390 to nvidia-460

2021-03-24 Thread russell

Hi Stpehen

When I checked /etc/driver_aliases the nvidia "10de,1f82" was not present.

On an unhappy note VirtualBox is not working, I did try and echo "set hma_disable =
1" > /etc/system.d/hma but it still results in a kernel panic

10de,1f82 is already in /etc/driver_aliases with nvidia-460 installed (?)

Which nvidia package are you using at the moment?

After completing the update and I performed pkg install mate_install

 Things that took seconds or worse a few minutes can now take
hours...(literally being left over night)

2) When I attempted to replace the Nvidia-390 driver with the

How can upgrade to the Nvidia-460 driver?

Hello!

Thanks to John to point out this possibility of changing the nvidia
driver version and avoid intermediate reboots.

Hello!

You don't need mate-install,
it's only a meta-package, you can leave in un-installed.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Fresh install of OpenIndiana - can not upgrade nvidia from nvidia-390 to nvidia-460 - update

2021-03-23 Thread russell

Hi

My dual opteron motherboard finally died, so I had to build a new
workstation based on a Ryzen 5 5600X.
Futher to my previous post

1) When performing a pkg install/update the create plan can take a very, very
long time compared to the Dual Opteron 2435 workstation.
   Things that took seconds or worse a few minutes can now take
hours...(literally being left over night - this was on the system console no
gui)
   Having ssh'ed to the workstation and attempted the pkg update via a
terminal, the performance is similar to the old Dual Opteron 2435

 2) When I attempted to replace the Nvidia-390 driver with the Nvidia-460
driver, by removing the Nvidia-390 driver it has a dependency on nvidia
pkg, attempting to remove nvidia pkg results in a warning that the mate
install depends on pkg nvidia.

How can upgrade to the Nvidia-460 driver?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster - Nvidia versions

2021-03-07 Thread russell

Hi

I have been able to use every Solaris Nvidia driver up to and including
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.27.04.run, however attempting  to install
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.32.03.run or NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.39.run when
in single user mode will cause a core dump. I initially attempted to
install NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.32.03 on the 7th January and on the 18th
February attempted to install NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.39.run.

I would be interested to hear if anyone can install
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.32.03.run or NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.39.run on
their system without crashing.

Details of the bug are available here https://www.illumos.org/issues/12965

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster - fmadm

2021-03-05 Thread russell

Hi

After following John's advice, booted to single user mode, disabled
Lightdm and then entered multi-user state everything was fine.
I ran fmadm faulty and there was nothing recent, there was a reference
to an old graphics card but not the current one.

Looking in /var/adm/messages there is a reference to

Mar  5 10:51:26 tesla savecore: [ID 570001 auth.error] reboot after
panic: pcieb-2: PCI(-X) Express Fatal Error. (0x41)

This I believe is a software issue as I can boot from Linux Mint 19.3,
20 and 20.1 livecd without any issues.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems after updating to latest Hipster

2021-03-04 Thread russell

Hi,

This evening I updated to the latest Hipster release and as normal I
always create a new BE "pkg update -v --be-name oihipster-20210304" and
reported as "OpenIndiana Hipster 2020.10 Version illumos-f2db47a16a 64-bit"
After completing the update and rebooting, my desktop started with the
new OI and as normal Lightdm failed to start first time around but
unlike "OpenIndiana Hipster 2020.10 Version illumos-72973a2ec5 64-bit"
which takes between 3 and 12 reboots to start Lightdm, things started to
go downhill very fast.

With the latest version of Hipster, system booted normally (as an aside
it will always boot single user) , showed the Nvidia driver message,
hostname and started the process of getting Lightdm. The screen goes
blank, a white block appears in the upper left hand corner and then the
systems restarts. On the second start up, the system reports vboxdrv
error and starts a device reconfiguration and attempts to start Lightdm,
blank screen, white block in the upper left hand corner and then reboot.
As a result of the device reconfiguration, I booted single user and
activated the previous BE and rebooted and it started Lightdm on the
second attempt.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Nvidia Geforce 1650 and Driver Updates

2020-12-30 Thread russell

Hi

Just tried the NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-460.27.04.run and this worked without
problem on my Dual Opteron 2435.
The NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.38.run and NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.45.01.run
drivers include security fixes for Intel CPUs which cause problems on
AMD Opterons.

When I perform a scanpci the following output is generated on the
Geforce 1650

pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x10de device 0x1f82
 NVIDIA Corporation TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650]

pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x01: vendor 0x10de device 0x10fa
 NVIDIA Corporation Device unknown

The  pci bus 0x0004 cardnum 0x00 function 0x01: vendor 0x10de device
0x10fa is actually an Nvidia Audio device does this need to be included
in /etc/driver_aliases?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] drmach_api warning

2020-11-06 Thread russell

Hi,

Swapped my Dual Opteron 2389s (Four Core) for Dual Opteron 2435 (Six
Core), now I am getting the following warning

drmach_acpi: [ID 779328 kern.warning] WARNING: drmach_init: number of
logical CPUs (6) in physical processor is not power of 2

Given CPUs can contain cores which are not a power of 2 is this really
necessary?

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Lightdm working Geforce GTX1650

2020-11-02 Thread russell

Hi,

Yesterday, after performing a "pkg update -v --be-name" I swapped in the
Geforce GTX1650 (replacing the Geforrce 750Ti)  in with the
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run driver and it worked.
After getting it working I downloaded the latest driver
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.38.run and applied it before making a new BE.
The new driver successfully removed the old
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run driver but caused a core dump when
attempting to install its self, leaving BE unbootable even in single
user mode.

So deleted the problem BE and created a new BE and got the
NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-455.28.run installed so Lightdm is working correctly.

Regards

Russell
