Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] New box/new motherboard suggestions

You need to consider chassis selection with respect to heat generation /
dissipation

Indeed. Two Xeons would consume 2x120W, which means heat and fan noise.
I would choose single-processor Core i7 (2.8 GHz, just 35W) fanless
chassis design, like this: https://www.quietpc.com/sys-a470s (supporting
processors up to 4 GHz and 91W, still fanless). Or if a 14-core Xeon is
preferable, like this: https://www.quietpc.com/sys-x490 (this one with
fan though). For my own needs a compact chassis design would be ideal,
like this: https://www.quietpc.com/sys-sentinel-fanless-s .

Not sure about OpenIndiana compatibility.

Sorry for slight off-topic if dual processor design is a must for you.
Maybe someone else would find these links useful.

Dmitry.
P.S. I am not affiliated with quietpc.com, just searching for a new PC.
I am more inclined to buy a 21.5" Retina iMac lately.

With respect to the information supplied in the following page

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10DAL-i.cfm

it is a good board ( I am not a user of such boards , but in those days I
am studying options to assemble a new computer to be usable with 4K
monitors ) .

You need to consider chassis selection with respect to heat generation /
dissipation .

Chip set of X9DRL ( C606 ) is different from the others ( C612 ) , means
it is using older version of Xeon processors which I do not know whether
you can find such a processor or not .

The others are using Xeon v3 processors which they are not compatible with
the above board .

Another problem may be , over time , Intel ( it is very likely that will )
switch to a new series ( 14nm ) , and it may/will not be possible to find
v3 processors ( 22nm ) in case of a replacement requirement ( means you
will replace the mother board as well ) .

It seems that Intel sockets are not backward compatible .

Due to such a non-existence of previous versions of CPUs and
incompatibility with new CPUs , I have destroyed and throw to waste basket
7 unused new mother boards .

Some boards above do not have audio output . If you need audio , you may
have to use external audio ( for example USB ) devices , or internal audio
add on cards .

One main board do not have on board graphics which requires a graphics card
. The others have VGA graphics port . Their resolutions are not listed ,
but its is very likely that they are around 2000
x 1200 ( requires reading their manuals ) . For larger resolution screens ,
it is necessary to buy a graphics card again . Higher resolution supporting
graphics cards are requiring PCI v3 means it is necessary to study their
add on card slot versions and suitability for graphics cards .

I don't have any direct experience with those, but the one thing I notice
is that
the X10DAL is a workstation (or tower) motherboard; the others are server
models.
