Re: [osol-discuss] What's the status of virtual consoles?

2007-01-04 Thread Alan Coopersmith

Normally I'd suggest checking the vconsole-discuss list instead,
but it seems to be mostly spam - much higher than other OpenSolaris
lists for some reason (is it not spam filtered or set up with the
same admin settings as the rest of us who have to filter spam on our
lists?).

I do know the team has been working on it a lot, but certainly needs
to get more of that work out in the open. There's been a lot of
design discussions and discussions on interactions with components
such as X, gdm, etc. they've held internally that should be held in
the open to be a true part of OpenSolaris.

They certainly should have, we don't need another devname.
(http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/devname). The only opensolaris.org
project I know of that went back into Nevada without *any* content on
opensolaris.org and with a single, spam, post on its list.

Both GMail and Jive use proportional fonts instead of fixed-width
ones.

For GMail the fix would be easy: Use HTML code tags after --
(e.g. rexex '^-- $') was found in an email body (seaching from the
bottom to make sure we catch only the footer) to render all email
footers in a fixed-width font.

rant
For Jive all hope is lost (just based on the fact that it still
screws-up the In-Reply-To:/References: mail headers after many many
people complained here about that...) ... ;-(((

I have no idea! My Xmas tree looks OK here (as does Roland's
butterfly), but then I use a plain-text email client. If you
look at my stuff with a fixed-width font, it should be OK.

From what I understand, the project is progressing nicely,
although I must put my hand up and admit to being one potential
bottleneck. There's some work that I volunteered to do--and
will start doing soon--but I've not found time to do it yet.
That will change very soon, though, as the project I've been
working on since last February will come to fruition in the
next couple of weeks, and I'll have much more time for this
sort of thng.

OpenSOlaris is important to me, but paying the bills must come
first!

This is not a good sign of open source in action for Solaris.

I'm sure all is OK. Perhaps there's not much to report yet?

I think what Dev is saying is that idea was that development
process is happening in the open. Rather than periodic reports
like - we are on track, everything is cool and indeed we need
to be more open. Unfortunately majority of projects registered
under opensolaris.org/os/projects still didn't get. I am sure,
though, that it will get there eventually...
