Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)
Yeah, I am too waiting for the ballot. The 'F' release was the craziest one with 20+ candidates. I favor to vote on a subset of all the names we have came up with so far. Seven is not bad, but we need a rule to pick 7. If we adhere to the official naming convention, we probably have six with one or two from Other Suggestions. Of course, I think we have to wait for the committee to come up with the candidates. John On Fri, May 10, 2013 at 11:30 AM, John Hebert johnalexheb...@gmail.comwrote: I agree. Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)
I agree to narrow down the names to Ili or Ichang. A word in pinyin starting with I is a mission impossible:) My 2 cents are we can google map “Peking” and “Ili” which go to China. But I google map “Ichang”, it can’t locate to “Yichang” in China. On Wikipedia, Ichang goes to the Yichang entry, too. But there is an Ili entry. Ditto for local website http://baike.baidu.comhttp://baike.baidu.com/. Another reason is we rarely call Inner Mongolia as Neimenggu, rarely call Urumqi as Wulumuqi, because there are foreign words, not coming from pinyin. Ditto for Ili. Replacing “Yichang” as “Ichang”, I also can figure out some of city names in China which conforms to that. But I don’t know whether that makes sense: Yichun C Ichun 伊春市 in Hei Long Jiang province. Yizhou C Izhou 宜州市 in Guang Xi (This one is nearer to Hong Kong than Ichang) Yicheng C Icheng 宜城市 in Hu Bei province (the same province in Ichang) Yidu C Idu 宜都市 in Hu Bei province (the same province in Ichang) Yiyang C Iyang 益阳市 in Hu Nan province Yixin C Ixin 宜兴市 in Jiang Su province Yizheng C Izheng 仪征市 in Jiang Su province Yichun C Ichun 宜春市 in Jiang Xi province (two Yichun cities, the same pinyin but different Chinese characters) Yibin C Ibin 宜宾市 in Si Chuan province (a famous city producing white wine) Yiwu C Iwu 义乌市 in Zhe Jiang province (a famous commodity wholesale market) I prefer to vote and let the community to determine the result. And by the way, no matter how far both are from Hong Kong, they still locate in China:) The rule is the place name in the state/country where the summit is going to be held. I would give my vote to Island, which is pretty universal and at the same time referring to what HK is : an island. Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)
Thierry and all: Just to be fair since someone else also voted on Ichang Ichang is actually a city in China. I initially created a new cat, but I decided to rollback. Name as both city and street in country/state where the design summit is held * '''Ichang''' (Ichang street, 宜昌街, is a [http://goo.gl/maps/EivEw street] in Hong-Kong, one of the shortest streets in Tsim Sha Tsui. '''Furthermore''', Ichang is also a city in Hubei, China. The British officials called the street Ichang because Hankow Road(漢口道) is next to today's Ichang street. Hankow(漢口) is a city in Hubei State(湖北省), China. Since the officials wanted to name the new street after a city near Hankow, and because the street itself is shorter than others, the officials picked Ichang City and called the new street Ichang Street. ) Or we can duplicate under both street and city. I will ask the community to judge. Thanks, John On Mon, May 6, 2013 at 5:00 AM, Thierry Carrez thie...@openstack.orgwrote: Jacob Godin wrote: +1 Ili Thanks for all the suggestions ! Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)
Thierry is correct, there is no word starting with “I”, “U” and “V” in classic transliteration of Chinese words in Mandarin. If we consider the words in Cantonese, Taiwanese (Hakka), or foreign words, there will be some candidates, as the friends suggested. For example in the list: Foreign words – Inner Mongolia, Ili Cantonese – Ichang street (there really is a city in mainland but named as “Yichang” in Mandarin with the same Chinese characters 宜昌市 near Yangtze river, and it locates at the end of the biggest three-gorge dam), Ip man and Iching (but those are not place names). Thanks. -- Shane From: John Hebert [mailto:johnalexheb...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, May 03, 2013 11:49 PM To: John Wong; openstack@lists.launchpad.net Cc: Wang, Shane; Thierry Carrez Subject: Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community) John Wong's idea is a good one. That creates an interesting problem for the I release, since there is no word starting with i in classic transliteration of Chinese words... so not so many candidates. We'll have to get a bit creative and be willing to bend the rules a little. Feel free to suggest names on this thread, or on the wiki page at: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Release_Naming I am especially interested by the input of our APAC community in general and our Chinese members in particular, which are probably the best to let us know which transliteration crime could be acceptable or which name they would particularly like. Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community)
+1! the Chinese character is '伊犁' and can be easily spelled, remembered and pronounced in English. This city name 'ili' is also searchable on google map. It is beautiful city located in the westernmost province of China. There lives people from different ethnic such as Han, Kazak, Uyghur, Hui, Mongol, Xibe. -Zhang Hua(Edward) Wang, Shane shane.wang@intel .com To Sent by: Thierry Carrez Openstack thie...@openstack.org, openstack-bounce openstack@lists.launchpad.net s openstack@lists.launchpad.net, +zhuadl=cn.ibm.co cc m@lists.launchpad .net Subject Re: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community) 2013-05-03 上午 09:22 What about Ili, which is a prefecture name in Xinjiang in China: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ili_Kazakh_Autonomous_Prefecture -- Shane -Original Message- From: Openstack [mailto:openstack-bounces+shane.wang=intel@lists.launchpad.net] On Behalf Of Thierry Carrez Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2013 10:02 PM To: openstack@lists.launchpad.net Subject: [Openstack] I release naming (calling APAC community) Hi everyone, As you may know, we name our release cycles after cities or counties in the state/country where the corresponding design summit is held.
