Hi,
I'd rather not subclass dict directly.
for various reasons adding extra attributes to normal python dict seems prone 
to errors since people will be expecting regular dicts, and on the other hand 
if we want to expand it in the future we might run into problems playing with 
dict methods (such as update)

I suggets (roughly):

class ResponseBody(dict): 
def __init__(self, body=None, resp=None): 
self_data_dict = body or {} 
self.resp = resp 

def __getitem__(self, index):
return self._data_dict[index]


Thus we can keep the previous dict interface, but protect the data and make 
sure the object will behave exactly as we expect it to. if we want it to have 
more dict attributes/method we can add them explicitly

Are you sure that you would like to have default value {} for method argument 
and not something like:

def __init__(self, body=None, resp=None):

In your case you have side effect. Take a look at:

Hi,
Very nice write up. I take my hat off for taking the time and doing a
postmortem. As a community we really need to work on how we communicate
with one another. At the end of the day we all have the common goal in the
success of the project.
At times I feel like things are done very quickly without any discussion
at all, for example the reverting of patches. I can understand when the
gate is broken that this is a must, but in other cases I think that we
need to discuss things in order to build trust and for people in the
community to learn what they may or may not have done correctly.

 - Dan Berrange, Russell and I didn't feel like we were ninjaing a
   controversial patch - you can see our perspective expressed in
   multiple places. The patch would have helped the live snapshot
   issue, and has other useful applications. It does not affect the
   broader testing debate.

   Johannes was a solitary voice expressing concerns with the patch,
   and you could see that Dan was particularly engaged in trying to
   address those concerns and repeating his feeling that the patch was
   orthogonal to the testing debate.

   That all being said - the patch did merge too quickly.

 - What exacerbates the situation - particularly when people attempt to
   look back at what happened - is how spread out our conversations
   are. You look at the version_cap review and don't see any of the
   related discussions on the devref policy review nor the mailing list
   threads. Our disjoint methods of communicating contribute to
   misunderstandings.

 - When it came to the revert, a couple of things resulted in
   misunderstandings, hurt feelings and frayed tempers - (a) that our
   retrospective veto revert policy wasn't well understood and (b)
   a feeling that there was private, in-person grumbling about us at
   the mid-cycle while we were absent, with no attempt to talk to us
   directly.


To take an even further step back - successful communities like ours
require a huge amount of trust between the participants. Trust requires
communication and empathy. If communication breaks down and the pressure
we're all under erodes our empathy for each others' positions, then
situations can easily get horribly out of control.

This isn't a pleasant situation and we should all strive for better.

GNOME in June 2001 was my introduction to full-time open-source

I Agree with Ian.
My understanding from a conversation a month ago was that there would be 
an alternative to the deprecated config option.
As far as I understand now there is no such alternative in Juno and in 
case that one has an out of the tree VIF Driver he'll be left out with a 
broken solution.

What do you say about an option of reverting the change?
Anyway It might be a good idea to discuss propositions to address this 
issue towards Kilo summit.

I tend to say 2) is the best option. There are many open source or
commercial backup software, and both for VMs and volume.
If we do option 1), it reminds me to implement something similar to VMware
method, and it will cause nova really heavy.

 IMO, the create_backup API extension should be removed from the Compute

 for the Compute API, IMO.

Indeed, this is pretty much what we are going to do about Gantt.  Nobody has 
said don’t do it, all of the objections have been around how  when to do the 
split.  We will revisit in Kilo (hopefully early in the cycle) and try again.

Note there is still the issue of Nova BP review process that I think needs to 
be tweaked but that is separate from the issue of how do we get Gantt going.

Full disclosure ... my current job is at EMC, and we just shipped a backup
product for the VMware vCloud (the one used for VMware vCloud Air -
http://vcloud.vmware.com/http://vcloud.vmware.com/).

First release of that project was wrapping up, and I was asked to look at
backup for OpenStack. As I am familiar with both open source community, and
with how to do backup at cloud scale ... the problem is an easy fit.

Different backup vendors might approach the problem in differing ways,
which calls for a pluggable backend.

What I find is that OpenStack is missing the hooks we need to do backup
efficiently. There are promising proposed bits, but ... we are not there
yet.

Storage for backups is of a different character than existing services in
OpenStack. Backup vendors need a place to plug in, and need some relevant
primitive operations.

Turns out the AWS folk already have rather nice support for backup from a
cloud developer's perspective. At present, there is nothing equivalent in
OpenStack. From a cloud developer's perspective, that is a huge lack.

While AWS is an API wrapped around a single service, OpenStack is an API
wrapped around differing services. This is both harder (in terms of
defining the API), and an advantage to customers with differing
requirements.

What lacks and is needed by backup vendors is the right set of primitives.

Dean's idea of reading .gitignore might be good.

I had a quick poke at git dir.c:match_pathspec_item() and sort of came
up with something similar [2] which roughly follows that and then only
matches on files that have a shell-script mimetype; which I feel is
probably sane for a default implementation.

IMO devstack should just generate it's own file-list to pass in for
checking and bashate shouldn't have special guessing code for it

It all feels a bit like a solution looking for a problem.  Making
bashate only work on a passed-in list of files and leaving generating
those files up to the test infrastructure is probably would probably
best the best KISS choice...
