Re: [openstack-dev] [tc][all] Discussing goals (upgrades) with community @ office hours

2018-10-15 Thread Michael Johnson
I am interested in participating in this discussion.

I think we have had a few goals that were selected before all of the
parts were in place. This leads to re-work and/or pushing goals work
into the already busy milestone 3 time frame.

If we want discussion to actually be with the community at large
(rather than giving lip service to the idea), then we need to be
more oriented to using email. Each time we have an office hour or a
meeting in IRC or elsewhere, or an ad hoc Hangout, unless we are
super disciplined about reporting the details to email afterwards, a
great deal of information falls on the floor and individuals who are
unable to attend because of time, space, language or other
constraints are left out.

For community-wide issues, synchronous discussion should be the mode
of last resort. Anything else creates a priesthood with a
disempowered laity wondering how things got away from them.

For community goals, in particular, preferring email for discussion
and planning seems pretty key.

I wonder if instead of specifying topics for TC office hours, we kill
them instead? They've turned into gossiping echo chambers.

Great idea, mnaser. I think it's good if we discuss all together during
office hours!

I believe the office hours should not only be used for discussing
progress by subject-matter experts (SME), but also a place for the
community to discuss cross-team issues, and victories.

I like to have goal champions talking about progress in the next office
hours. +1!

Thanks naser, this is good idea. Office hour is perfect time to have more
technical and help-needed discussions for set goals or cross project work.
Which office hour(Tue, Wed, Thur) we will use for this discussion?

[openstack-dev] [tc][all] Discussing goals (upgrades) with community @ office hours

2018-10-13 Thread Mohammed Naser
Hi everyone!

It looks like we're not going to be able to have a TC meeting every 2
weeks as I had hoped for, the majority of the TC seems to want to meet
once every month. However, I wanted to ask if the community would be
interested in taking one of the upcoming office hours to discuss the
current community goals, more specifically upgrades.

It's been brought to my attention by some community members that they
feel like we've been deciding goals too early without having enough
maturity in terms of implementation. In addition, it seems like the
final implementation way is not fully baked in by the time we create
the goal. This was brought up in the WSGI goal last time and it looks
like there is some oddities at the moment with "do we implement our
own stuff?" "do we use the new oslo library?" "is the library even
ready?"

I wanted to propose one of the upcoming office hours to perhaps invite
some of the community members (PTL, developers, anyone!) as well as
the TC with goal champions to perhaps discuss some of these goals to
help everyone get a clear view on what's going on.

Does this seem like it would be of interest to the community? I am
currently trying to transform our office hours to be more of a space
where we have more of the community and less of discussion between us.

Regards,
Mohammed
