Re: [OS-webwork] Sourceforge CVS down all the time?

2003-07-22 Thread Robert Dawson
I agree that the history is crucial

I have just been working on going from WebWork 1.2.1 to 1.3, and having
access to the CVS history was essential in helping spot new features that
have been introduced.

Tracy's idea would work, my CVS isn't brilliant, but I am sure that a guru
could write a script to automate this.

If it is not possible to get the complete history then I agree with Bill
and
think that WW1.x CVS should stay at SF. Since the original authors are not
around much anymore, the history is sometimes the only clue you have to
what
they really intended with some pieces of code.
For WW1.x the anonymous CVS access is perhaps not such a big issue either,
since the code does not change that much between releases.

   All,

Would a move to java.net's CVS entail a re-checkin of all sources? If
 so,
  that'd
blow away their history... Could the repository as it exists on the SF
  site be
moved (files, not re-checkin) to java.net?

Also, are we talking ww2/xwork *and* the current ww? In the case of
  ww2/xwork,
history isn't so important but with the older ww stuff we should
 thinking
  about
   trying to keep it.

My 2 cents - BTW, I'd love to see CVS moved. SF is DOG slow.

Initially, just CVS. It's upto each module owner/developers to decide if
they want to move or not. Basically I think the idea is to get rid of
dependencies on sourceforge, since they're, well, a shit service.

Is OpenSymphony and Atlassian also a s*** service ?

Never had any problems with Linux ...

Let me guess: you've read the BileBlog and how to argue about open source,
right? Please say Yes. Otherwise, the sincere dain bramage you're
displaying might actually exist in the wild.

It's pretty well-known that SF.net's anonymous CVS access is INCREDIBLY
broken right now - most of the other services, including the ext CVS
access, is working. But for people who aren't part of the CVS repository
(like me), SF is incredibly painful to use, if you're using the CVS
repositories. That's OS-independent, BTW - I get the same problem on your
beloved Linux.

Re: [OS-webwork] Sourceforge CVS down all the time? [OFFTOPIC]

2003-07-18 Thread Hani Suleiman
It's really hard to stop myself from degenerating into being incredibly
abusive. I'll give you some tips though:

1) Just because someone disagrees with you, it doesn't mean they're
using windows.
2) linux is not perfect, nor is it that amazing.
3) sourceforge CVS is utterly useless for anonymous access. I
personally don't give a crap as I'm a committer and so my cvs access
works fine.
4) The freeness or otherwise of sourceforge doesn't alter the fact that
it plain doesn't work.
5) the move to java.net is to help ingrates like you get access to cvs.
If you don't like it, feel free to boycott it.

Maybe you're using the OS counterpart of sf.net: Windows ?

SF.net servers have been more stable the last months

It really is down that often. I've just moved the osworkflow CVS to
java.net, oscache is moving in the next day or so too. Once those
are
settled in, I plan on moving over propertyset and oscache.
webwork1,
2,

nobody else feels like doing it.

Do I miss anything, or is the CVS really down this often?

The plan is to move CVS to java.net for now... purely because
SF sucks for non-developers. After that I'm thinking we might
as well move file releases and mailing lists so we can sever
ourselves from SF entirely. The website and bug tracker will
 remain the same.

Actually, you did miss something. Lately, it has been down more
often than that (for me, at least).

Would it be possible to have a nightly build put up somewhere since
those not using pserver access can actually access the cvs server?

Cheers,
