Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Weekly technical discussion meeting

2020-11-28 Thread Al Morton
I'm sure we can think of an efficient way to accomplish release management
using the existing Jira features in each project's JERMA issues. January, we
need to agree on how we will create or revise JIRA issues, and the kinds of
fields/tags we will use before we start another release.

2020-09-24 Thread Al Morton
Hi OPNFV,

At the Sept 22 TSC Meeting, we received a short Marketing update delivered by
Heather. Although much of the messaging will focus on the joint work to combine
OPNFV and CNTT, I asked that our public communications also cover the Key
accomplishments and New initiatives of our projects. So, we will have an agenda
item:

[] Discussion of content (for publication in various forms) to provide to
Heather and Marketing with key OPNFV-level highlights in 3Q and 4Q.

Please join us for a few minutes at the TSC meeting on September 29 [0] and
bring your ideas. Everyone is always welcome to join the TSC and hear what's
going on.

thanks and regards,

[opnfv-tech-discuss] September 1 Release Meeting: Requirements Work Group (RWG)

2020-08-31 Thread Al Morton
Hi OPNFV,

This week's Release meeting will focus on some very specific requirement areas,
and I ask that everyone with expertise please attend! (PTLs, Committers,
Contributors).

The table summarizing RWG discussion and feedback is here [0].

We need to finish the triage on networking requirements, for example:

req.inf.ntw.03 data plane benchmarking (for throughput, latency, etc.) related
requirements

req.inf.ntw.07 "support network resiliency"... to link failure? interface
failure? switch failure?
related to req.gen.rsl.01 for OpenStack components
>>> What OPNFV tools can we call-upon to help fill these requirements?
WHO are the stakeholders? (the resource question).

AND the telemetry and monitoring-related requirements, in the Assurance
Requirements Table:

req.asr.mon.01 (Functional)
req.asr.mon.03 (Monitoring)
req.asr.mon.04 (Network)

Discussion within the Projects (VSPERF, SAMPLEVNF, NFVBENCH, and Barometer)
will continue afterward, but we will try to obtain whatever commitments we can
for JERMA.

Acceleration features (Cyborg) and NUMA-node isolation capability might be
possible to test with the performance tools - VSPERF has done it. But these are
"SHOULD" level requirements, AND the OS management APIs are still under
development.

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] LFN Governing Board outcome on the OPNFV-CNTT Merger

2020-08-23 Thread Al Morton
OPNFV,

Following the initial organizational meeting on Friday, I now ask for
volunteers to serve on one of two new teams:

1. Organization/Governance - Definition of org structure, Interactions with
OVP, cvc, TSC composition, Voting eligibility, Etc.

2. Technical/Debt/TSC - Operational aspects

Since the tasks for each team and their Scope have not yet been fully defined
[0], please let me know (directly by e-mail) if you are willing to serve on one
or both of these teams. I think we will need more sessions to clarify the scope
of these two teams, so please bring your questions to the meeting next week,
schedule to be announced.

thanks,

[opnfv-tech-discuss] LFN Governing Board outcome on the OPNFV-CNTT Merger

2020-08-20 Thread Al Morton
OPNFV,

The LFN Governing Board expressed strong support for the Merger of OPNFV and
CNTT at their meeting on August 19th. This is good news for OPNFV; it is the
option many of us preferred from the start of Future Mode of Operations (FMO)
discussions. A special shout-out to Scot Steele, who led the CNTT FMO team for
several months.

As the CNTT FMO committee concludes its work, there will be a new transition
team formed to complete the merger. There is plenty of work to do. Folks who
are interested should continue to attend the "last" CNTT FMO meeting in the
Friday time slot to learn more. (I don't know more than this now, sorry for
that.) The board has asked for a smooth transition as much as possible, and as
short time frame as possible (re-use of the best rules, charter aspects, etc.).

Meanwhile, our development efforts in all our projects continue, including the
work toward the OPNFV JERMA Release.

THANKS for your continued participation in OPNFV, and the new organization in
2021!

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-project-leads] [opnfv-tsc] Jerma Release Meeting: Requirements Working Group

2020-08-17 Thread Al Morton
Hi Alec, thanks for your question, and David for your initial reply.

There are multiple stages to vetting the requirements at a technical level
(where we are now); we’ll try to involve knowledgeable CNTT Leads early and
often, to influence their next release.

You’re right: These are requirements from the CNTT RA-1 documents which refer
to OpenStack Architecture. I don’t know why K8s was mentioned in several
places, either. Perhaps there is a logical explanation and we’ll find out when
we talk to CNTT.

Hi Alec,

I think that the best approach is to attend the release meeting on Tuesday.
Initially, we will be addressing the scope of CNTT requirements that we want to
take on for OPNFV Jerma. Subsequently, we will dig into the details of the
requirements.

Also, note that @Georg Kunz<mailto:georg.k...@est.tech> has created a new
project called Kuberef that seeks to develop a kubernetes-based RI.

Hi Al,

What is the best format to provide feedback on the wiki [0]?
Some topics may require a lot more than what can fit in a table cell and likely
would benefit from more interactive discussion between OPNFV and CNTT teams
(technical level, not organizational as this seems to be what is happening most
at this time). Collaboration methods that are friendly to multi-TZ are
preferred.

Trying to get up to speed, one general question as it is not clear from the
wiki, these requirements seem to be focused on openstack and VMs, but I also
see occasional mention of k8s, can we clarify the exact scope of this wiki? It
is understandable to try to cover everything (openstack + k8s) but it is
already challenging to just cover openstack properly, adding k8s to the
discussion is going to be even more challenging to get something
concrete/actionable in a reasonable time.

Thanks

OPNFV PTLs,

During David's Tuesday Release Meeting (right after the TSC meeting), we plan
to use some of the agenda time to cover CNTT BALDY Release Requirements vetting.

Please Join the Release Meeting to discuss! <<<<

Our progress will be captured on the JERMA Release wiki, in a dedicated page
[0].
I worked through about half of the 150 requirements again yesterday.

In general, it would be better if the requirement wording anticipated more
specific action by the Reference Implementation projects, or the projects
contributing to the Reference Conformance Testing. I view the current
requirement wording as more directed to vendors ("the architecture must allow
for..."), while alternative wording could help testers and accomplish the same
goals ("Test that the API can instantiate one or more VMs, .") Similar
for Ref Implementation...

As I said many times, we will need to engage the CNTT WS leaders and give them
direct feedback that they can implement in their documentation. We also need
CNTT WS Leader dialog on requirement priority, stakeholder support levels, and
release scheduling.

thanks,
Al

[acm] Think of OPNFV's requirement-vetting taking place on a stable CNTT
release, like the first step for further development based on any release.
OPNFV's release schedule doesn't allow us to wait for Baraque. When the
organizations combine, one of the benefits should be tighter feedback loops (at
least that's my goal, we're not there yet, we have to build the new org first).

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Jerma Release Meeting: Requirements Working Group

2020-08-16 Thread Al Morton
OPNFV PTLs,

During David's Tuesday Release Meeting (right after the TSC meeting), we plan
to use some of the agenda time to cover CNTT BALDY Release Requirements
vetting.

>>> Please Join the Release Meeting to discuss!

CNTT WS Leader dialog on requirement priority, stakeholder support levels, and
release scheduling.

thanks,
Al

Hi all. We wait for 10min on the bridge but no one except my China Mobile
colleagues join the call. Don’t know if there is any holidays or any other
reasone…
Any way, we will cancel this week’s call.
@rj5...@att.com may be you would like to spend some time
to have short discussion about how to start the work on VNF CI/CD this week or
early next week? I am hoping we could have some efficient discussion about this
on our next week’s call?

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Performance testing as a part of the OVP process

2020-07-06 Thread Al Morton
There was an extensive discussion of this during the Virtual DTF (Tuesday),
so that discussion is essential background reading. Also notes from the session
in daily summaries. There were 7 slide total, IIRC.

The performance-oriented people who attended the session believe
this is no longer about “if”, but “how” and “when”
as Jim has rightly captured below.

The CVC meeting slot today was the original target to continue,
but I believe that failed due to the US holiday and extended weekend.

it is good that the topic re-emerges.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] June 30 TSC Meeting Round-up

2020-07-01 Thread Al Morton
Hi TSC and OPNFV,

During our TSC meeting yesterday, we deferred a few items to e-mail:

1. DO we hold a TSC meeting on July 7, 2020?
   - I won't be able to attend, I can certainly appoint a proxy if the
preference is to meet.
ACTION: IF TSC Members cannot attend, or prefer a week-off, please reply with
this information.
Silence means you will attend the meeting if held.

ACTION: July has arrived, and vacation/holiday/PTO season. Please appoint a
PROXY if you cannot attend a TSC meeting (or multiple meetings) ! See the TSC
Proxy Policy [0].

2. Kuberef Project Creation Voting: https://wiki.opnfv.org/x/RANbAw
   - When we looked at the beginning of the TSC meeting, there were 7 +1 votes,
and no opposition.
   - I forgot to check at the end of the meeting, today there are 8 +1 votes,
and no opposition.
   - So, I conclude that the project is Created.
   - Please establish the repo, e-mail subject tags, and anything else a new
project.
   - Congratulations!

3. Frank observed that we are a 13 member TSC at the moment, with 15 TSC seats
available
   - 2 TSC members have formally stepped-down, and no replacements were
nominated.
   - It's worthwhile to clarify the criteria for *majority* for future off-line
voting under these conditions, and to do this while we don't have a vote
in-progress.

The current Charter [1] says, in item 3. c.:
Except as provided in Section 7.c.and 8.a,
decisions by vote at a meeting require a majority vote of those in
attendance,
provided quorum is met.
Decisions made by electronic vote without a meeting require
*a majority vote of all voting members* of the TSC.

We could distinguish between Total TSC Seats (15, usually occupied by voting
members), and the number of Occupied TSC Seats (currently 13). We can't expect
an unoccupied TSC seat to vote. So, under current conditions, the "majority
vote of all voting members" would require 7 of the 13.

ACTION: I welcome discussion of this topic, and seek a #agree on the resulting
text at the next TSC meeting.

regards, and happy Independence day weekend for US folks,
Al

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Schedule Changes for Thursday, Day 4 of Virtual DTF

2020-06-24 Thread Al Morton
OPNFV,

After today's sessions, I concluded the following about Thursday's agenda:

* Topic "Joint Topic: Industry Adoption of Conformance" would be largely
redundant with the panel discussion held today on Badging. Let's drop it!
* We need more time to Discuss "Release Process 2.0"
* I found a conflict that we can resolve:
OPNFV - OPNFV Infrastructure Work Group Updates, and
CNTT - Security and Testing for Security

So, OPNFV - OPNFV Infrastructure Work Group Updates will take place at 1330
UTC, 0630 PDT
and OPNFV+CNTT Joint Discussion on Release Process 2.0 will take place at 1400
UTC, 0700 PDT

The TeamUp agenda has been updated: https://teamup.com/ks3zwmuoqiezynn1st

We're making the best use of our time as the Event comes to a close.

See you Thursday,
Al

Team,

Thanks for attending the release meeting today. I think that it was a good
discussion. I'd especially like to thank Scot for attending and for his
ongoing participation. I think that having someone from CNTT involved in our
discussions is extremely valuable.

Attached, please find the updated slides for the release process proposal that
came out of our meeting. If you share this with anyone, please emphasize that
it's an in-process draft and has not yet been approved.

Changes:

  1. Clarified "OPNFV scope" decision box on flow chart and added footnote
with link to OPNFV mission statement.
  2. Expanded assumptions slide to include project requirements veto, as well
as the assumption that the process is a starting point and is expected to
evolve.
  3. Added "DRAFT" to cover.
  4. Added page numbers.
Let me know if you have any questions.

David

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] Please Read: Possible Date Change for the June Developer and Testing Forum

2020-05-06 Thread Al Morton
Hi Heather,

Thanks for this alternate-week suggestion.

One possible conflict came to mind: June 22-25 is the week after most
US primary and secondary schools have closed, and many families
probably planned some form of vacation before Summer activities
start, like camps and (shudder) Summer School. Of course, all
scheduling of travel and Summer activities may be revised to
comply with social distancing guidelines. But post-school vacations
may be the main reason that this week was largely un-scheduled.

It would be good to hear from those who actually have this
conflict – it doesn’t apply to me or my family.

Subject: [opnfv-tsc] Please Read: Possible Date Change for the June Developer
and Testing Forum

Technical Communities,

During TAC discussion this morning, there was provisional consensus to move the
developer event to June 22-25 from its original date of June 1-4.

The reasoning behind this is threefold: 1) the OpenStack virtual PTG will now
take place the week of June 1-4 and minimizing overlap with that activity would
be preferable; 2) June 1 is a public holiday throughout much of Europe; 3) it
gives us more time for planning.

Obviously doing date changes mid-stream has the possibility to be disruptive
(and why I'm normally fairly resistant to doing it), but the week of June 22
has been identified as one without other conflicts (as far as we know), and the
folks on the TAC meeting this morning were unanimous in finding this date
preferable. Avoiding logistics conflict with OpenStack definitely seems like a
compelling reason to consider changing since there is a great deal of overlap
between our technical communities.

We did, however, want to make sure that the technical participants feel
comfortable with this change before we made it final.

If anyone has any strong concerns or issue with this, please let us know ASAP,
since if we do proceed with the earlier date, we need to get the pieces in
place quite soon. We also want to get registration open as soon as possible,
and we obviously need official dates to make that happen.

Cheers,
Heather

[opnfv-tech-discuss] URGENT: Topic proposals for April virtual event

2020-04-02 Thread Al Morton
Folks,

Friday April 3, there is a meeting to begin to schedule the
Virtual event, based on the topics that our community has
entered into the proposals page [0].

The planning meeting occurs at 1300 EDT,
which is 1700 UTC and 1900 CDT – that’s plenty of time for
all of us to think about:

+ Issues facing our community and
where a real-time discussion could progress the topic quickly

+ Demos you want to present or

+ Tutorials you would like to see!

I’m adding this note to Jim’s request below, Please help make
this event a success! There are ALWAYS topics we need to discuss
when we get together, even if only virtually. Our one hour
TSC meeting is *never* enough time, right?

Thanks, and stay healthy, we all need to stand together!

Folks,
With the postponement of the face-to-face event following ONES in April, we are
moving the discussions to the virtual event. Our planning committee (Frank and
Trevor) will help arrange the schedules and select the topics. You can propose
topics that you intend to present on the topics
page.
There are other community topics also listed on this page, so please bring
your topics and let's create that open market for exchange of ideas that is the

[opnfv-tech-discuss] TSC Meeting Time during the Chaos Weeks

Hi All,

The TSC Meeting Invite (sent by the Chair last August)

is anchored to US Pacific time, and moves with the

change to Daylight Savings Time in the US (which

began on Sunday, March 8).

As a result, the meeting will take place in about 45

minutes, at the top of the next hour in most places:

[opnfv-tech-discuss] Brainstorming Ideas for Collaboration

2020-03-08 Thread Al Morton
Hi OPNFV,

I'm starting a thread here to collect some ideas
to increase virtual collaboration and partly replace
the face2face ONES event, now Postponed for many months.

For example, OPNFV'ers *might* commit to working in
one/same time-zone for a few days, and to cancel or
not-attend the meetings they normally pass-up while
travelling when there is a conflict during these days.
Note that living in the single time-zone chosen is
not necessarily an advantage, as there will be the
most conflicts with the usual meetings in that time-zone.

As this is the "Collect Ideas" phase of Brainstorming,
let's do just that and not discuss the merits or Pros/Cons yet.

When we have enough ideas, we'll meet to see which ones
have merit and decide how to develop them further
(wiki pages, e-mail, live discussion, etc.).

I expect the "Collect Ideas" phase will last one week,
and we will use some of the Weekly Tech Discussion time
to sort-out the results on March 16.

Thanks for your ideas, and welcome to the weeks of
Spring time-zone chaos*!
Al

* The US switched to Daylight Savings Time today.

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] LFN ONES Unconference call for topics open!

2020-02-11 Thread Al Morton
Hi Jim,

Thanks for starting this discussion.

One of the topics that will require some Un-conference space
is the OPNFV TSC meeting. The meeting would normally occur
at 6AM PST on April 21, but I suggest we might move the meeting
an hour or two later that day, and collect our normal attendees
before the usual keynotes (at 9AM PST).

Folks,
If you'd like to suggest topics for the unconference time during ONES (April 20

now. The space/time is likely to fill up so make your ideas compelling to
create the highest likelihood of being selected!

Hi 发自我的华为手机

I should be able to join the Feb 4th UTC 00:00-01:00 time slot

this week (7pm EST), and next week. This week will be a little

tricky, the location where I’m staying has Satellite Internet

access and (likewise) very low mobile phone service, but I should

be able to find a better location in the US EST evening and join.

I note that this time is only possible because no one volunteered

from Europe, UTC+1.

Thanks for volunteering to lead the 2.0 Sub-committee!

Al

Hi, all. Sorry for the mess up with date. I mean Feb 3rd - Feb 4th

now it seems UTC 0:00-1:00 is the most favorite slot.

@Scott, are you available for that slot? if so, I will arrange the call
accordingly

Still getting used to UTC times ☺

Just to clarify:

From what I understand these choices are for 3 timings on Monday the 3rd North
American time zone.

Choice 1: UTC 13:00-14:00, 3rd Feb

Choice 2: UTC 0:00-1:00, 4th Feb

Choice 3: UTC 1:00-2:00, 4th Feb

I would suggest we arrange our first call on next Monday so that we can give
updates to the TSC on Tuesday.

I would propose the following slot, please see if these slot are ok for you, and
reply to this email thread on which slot you would prefer.

Feb. 1st: UTC 13:00-14:00 (the one hour slot before OPNFV tech-discussion)

Feb. 2nd: UTC 0:00-1:00 (should be Monday evening for people located in NA.)

  UTC 1:00-2:00

in the meantime, please review the etherpad page before the first call so that
we can have a sufficient discussion. I am planning to define and make a
decision on the working item for this sub-committee on the first call. And
begin digging into each one of that in the following calls.

[opnfv-tech-discuss] TAC White Paper: Combined OPNFV and CNTT section

2020-01-29 Thread Al Morton
Hi OPNFV,

At the TSC Meeting yesterday, Rabi Abdel volunteered to be
the lead editor of a combined OPNFV and CNTT section of a
White paper being prepared by the TAC. The section will be
one to two pages in length (rather short).

The Crucial Question to answer is: "What are OPNFV and CNTT?"

Here's the meetbot summary of TSC discussion, captured faithfully
by Mark Beierl:

* TAC Technical Whitepaper Working Group (mbeierl, 14:49:49)
  * call for volunteers please :) (mbeierl, 14:49:58)
  * volunteer can be any community member (mbeierl, 14:50:09)
  * Rabi volunteers to help (mbeierl, 14:50:56)
  * Jonathan notes that GSMA has resources that can help (mbeierl,
14:51:44)
  * ollivier suggests the use of Gerrit as a review. Email discussion
to be started (mbeierl, 14:53:25)
  * acmacm notes that the current whitepaper might already be under
GitHub control (mbeierl, 14:54:14)

As you can see from the link above, the white paper will be prepared
as a series of Wiki pages (and not gerrit or GitHub). We will have the
ability to suggest text, comment on the text in the Wiki, and discuss
via e-mail. If anyone has an access problem for the Wiki page,
let me know and I will attempt to solve it with the WG leader,
Ranny Haiby .

Thank you Rabi, for volunteering!

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] email updates for CNTT -- follow up action for 01/28 TSC

2020-01-29 Thread Al Morton
Thanks for your e-mail updates on CNTT, Fu Qiao and Mike!

I learned more than one thing I needed to know:
- example: 2 CIRV repos have been created
(I was about to send mail to follow-up on this topic)

Don’t forget to update your CIRV Project Page with the new Repo information,
at the bottom :) . https://wiki.opnfv.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=47284396

=== Mea Culpa =
I appreciate the patience of all those who have been held-off
on their updates while we grind-out other critical items
on the TSC agenda, including:

Fu Qiao and Mike Fix / CNTT
Trevor Cooper / SPC
Trevor Bramwell & Aric Gardner/ LF IT/Infra update
Jim Baker / Action Item Review

The small team of TSC agenda planners will happily make
*real discussion time* for you next week, should you need it.
Please let us know.

Hi, all. We didn’t have chance to reach to the CNTT update agenda on
yesterday’s TSC call. Therefore it was required to provide an email updates
I try to conclude some CNTT activities as follows. @Mike Fix, please also help
add anything else you observe.

1. The CNTT community begins to plan the Baldy release. Details can be
found here:
https://wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/LN/CNTT+Baldy

2. The CNTT RI WS also works on its MVP for the next release, which
will happen in April.

3. HDV(hardware delivery verification)was also discussed on last week’s
RI WS call. This is a work item to verify the hardware before software is
implementation.
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/CIRV/Hardware+Delivery+Verification

4. PDF 2.0 was discussed in RI WS call and Monday tech discussion. This
will be discussed in the following tech-discussion calls, to first define the
scenarios that will utilize PDF 2.0, and the detailed requirement and
expectation of that.

5. Two CIRV repos created: 1) CIRV, and 2) sub-project repo, “Spirent”.
The Spirent repo is specific to onboard Spirent test cases as they pertain to
CIRV. The CIRV repo, will host supporting tools/capabilities as discussed in
Prague: a) Perf profiling, b) HVD, c) Manifest (software) validations.

6. (Adding to #2) CNTT MVPs drafted for April ONES. To be baselined
on/around 2/6.

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss][opnfv-tsc] Airship and PDF

2019-12-01 Thread Al Morton
Hi Georg, Mark, Fu Qiao, and all,

Thanks for this discussion – it has helped me to better
understand where we are, through references and work in progress.
With this in mind, I suggest a small edit to Georg’s proposed
text for the vote:

“Does the TSC exempt the Airship project from utilizing the Pod Descriptor File
for the Iruya release based on a documented plan for supporting the current
(possibly evolved) PDF in the Jerma release?”

I realize that this may give all installer projects (especially Airship)
a moving target for the Jerma Release, including any new installer projects.
But the opinions expressed so far IMO indicate that there is value in an
evolved PDF (and I agree), making agreement on the evolution time-sensitive.

So, we may need to add some delivery dates for any evolved PDF and Airship’s
plan with this proposed question to TSC, and perhaps we simply note a week or
so to set the dates if that’s the consensus.

regards,
Al

Subject: Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss][opnfv-tsc] Airship and PDF

Hi, all.
Dispite of all the discussion about airship or pdf, I think one common
understanding here is "we need a generic discription file for the installers,
which is installer agnostic". I think this is also a common understanding
within the CNTT RI. Given this fact, I think what we are doing in airship 2.0,
PDF evolvement, and Chp05 of CNTT RI which is a discription file for installer
for the CNTT Jan. release, are all targeting to this goal.
I think it was a good discussion on yesterday's TSC call that we are not
blocking any project, but we just need to give the community a pressure when
will we reach this common goal. For this common goal, it does not just simply
mean one should follow the other, but people should sit together, work on the
discription files, and have it evolve to fit our end user's needs. And this
does not mean we still have years to work on this. At least from the CNTT RI
WS, we really have a deadline of this January to release the discription file.
May I suggest a workable plan for driving this as follows:
1. we work on the discription files requirement defined in chp05 of CNTT,
https://github.com/cntt-n/CNTT/pull/535.
I would suggest any one who really care about the common discription file to
join the discussion and provide comments at this thread. And let us target Jan.
release of CNTT for a common discription file
2. Evolve PDF according to the requirements defined in chp05, with a given
deadline ( I think J release for OPNFV probably would be too late, but I guess
that probably is something we can target now...)
3. Evolve all installers, including airship, to fit into PDF accordingly.

Thanks George,

That’s basically what I’ve seen so far. Unfortunately, a schema != a
specification. While there is some context in the structure of the schema,
there is still a great deal of ambiguity. Hacking against it is fine, but I’m
not sure I’d want to develop against it.

That said, we do have a proposed plugfeast challenge to create a preprocessor
to mediate PDF to Airship manifest. Perhaps we can incorporate an
objective/requirement to show their work, so we can capture more insight/data
about the fields. Jim?

---

WRT your question #2, note the Airship manifests describe the full stack soup
to nuts (i.e. h/w, s/w, networking, services, etc.), while the PDF represents a
subset of that information, so when xlating to Airship the PDF will have to be
supplemented with information to tell Airship what you’d like it to do with the
infra described in the PDF. Airship is currently working on the 2.0 version,
and that includes enhancements/changes to the manifest format. You might be on
to something when you talk about evolving Airship and the PDF to go together.
They’re both YAML, and given Airship covers the full stack, the PDF (or SDF or
other) may be able to inherit from Airship, and potentially vice versa.

Disclaimer: I use Airship, but don’t work on it, and do not represent it any
more than anyone else. This is just brainstorming from your original comments.

Thanks,
-Mark

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] TSC Meeting Artifacts

2019-10-12 Thread Al Morton
Hi all, I was confused about “IRC-only”, too.

Audio is essential, and I believe we should use
our meeting/audio time to quickly close on issues already
discussed by e-mail (or review in other media),
as we are doing now...

It occurred to me that Etherpad is not on our list
for notetaking possibilities. Live editing during a
meeting would be more interactive than IRC or Wiki,
but Etherpad has none of IRC’s features for
meeting management
(?? someone please tell me I’m wrong about this!).

Many IETF WGs use Etherpad for Notetaking/Minutes, and
IETF has been recording meetings for over ten years.
I have listened to recordings when the notes fell short.
I haven’t found an instance like this for a TSC call
(when I wished for an audio recording).

A statement in the agenda and read-out during the recording
usually suffices: “This meeting is being recorded.
If you do not consent to being recorded, you must leave
the meeting (now).” ( or keep your audio muted throughout
the meeting?)

Recording is possible and used frequently, but IANAL
and I don’t currently see a need to record TSC meetings,
so I would prefer to avoid this complexity at TSC.
Collaborative minutes capturing key discussion points
and votes or agreements are sufficient for me.

I think there are legal issues of recoding a meeting without everyone’s consent.

Take a look at:
https://www.mwl-law.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/RECORDING-CONVERSATIONS-CHART.pdf
“LAWS ON RECORDING CONVERSATIONS IN ALL 50 STATES”:
-All-Party Consent applies to “California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and
Washington”
-For “Interstate/Multi-State Phone Calls”, especially persons in many
countries are involved, it becomes very complicated.

So there is huge legal risk if we want to record a meeting without everyone’s
consent.

Just FYI.

Hey Mark …

Hmmm … so perhaps there is misunderstanding about the vote … I think you are
saying the vote will NOT impact audio as the primary meeting format i.e.
regardless of the vote outcome we will continue with audio for TSC calls. The
vote is ONLY about meeting notes i.e.

IRC only = notes are only taken with IRC
IRC + recording = note are taken using IRC and meetings are recorded.

I also don’t mind recordings as extra BUT IMO 1) it is rarely useful if there
are good notes and it detracts from taking good notes; 2) media still needs to
be posted with the meeting agenda on Wiki.

2019-10-07 Thread Al Morton
Thanks for capturing these key points, Bin.

Let me add a couple of qualifications:

The Student Volunteers *require* a letter of Recognition.
This gives their efforts a clear value when applying for jobs,
and for some students, this is sufficient motivation to do
a project.

All we are asking of Linux Foundation is to use their
Letterhead for this purpose - nothing else.
PTLs would do all the process steps and report milestones
to the TSC when a project is complete.

Otherwise, OPNFV could create their own Letterhead,
or some other solution. The proposed text of the letter is
on github [3]

Practically, there would be a limit on the number of
Student Volunteers a project can handle, and the candidates
must be students currently enrolled.

Hello community,

Thank you all for attending the weekly technical discussion today.

In order to further foster community development, attract more talented fresh
developers and extend OPNFV's outreach to academia more effectively, Sridhar
Rao<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__wiki.opnfv.org_display_-7Esridharkn=DwMFAg=LFYZ-o9_HUMeMTSQicvjIg=OfsSu8kTIltVyD1oL72cBw=TzBJPeruOmeZiZY3tNorAQ_pWeY2AL2ZR_DP-Q20tO4=x-nKkEG20DsdsVFGI8sYiiKln7PDrGSasgq3w3cC01Y=>

proposed a great idea of recruiting and recognizing **student volunteers** (or
unpaid interns). This idea is pretty much the same as existing intern program -
same process and same evaluation criteria such as project goals / deliverables
/ evaluations results etc. to ensure the quality. The only differences are:
-Student Volunteers are unpaid
-Number of Student Volunteers are not capped because there is no impact
on budget (unpaid)
-Wording of Letter of Recognition is slightly different in order to
indicate the volunteer/unpaid nature.

At the end the meeting, all agreed and recommended that this topic should be
brought to and discussed at TSC meeting. If TSC agrees, we can ask LFN to
expand existing internship program to cover Student Volunteers.

For details of discussion today, please refer to the meeting minutes page [1],
which includes attendees list and IRC log [2].

We are also looking for discussion topics / agenda items for next week's
technical discussion on October 14th. If you have any topic, please let me know.

Thank you

[opnfv-tech-discuss] ALL Projects: Action to check Python 2 Dependencies in Upstream Projects

2019-10-01 Thread Al Morton
All PTLs (and Project members),

OPNFV recently voted to move to Python 3, since Python 2 will no
longer be supported after this year.

On the TSC Call today (Oct 1), it was agreed to ask all PTLs to
*look into support of Python 3 in all their Upstream Projects*.

The purpose is to determine if there are issues, make the
community aware of them, and find way(s) to deal with the
issues that this lack of Python 3 support causes.

Cedric Ollivier is looking into the current status of
OpenStack, where there are likely issues remaining.

Please make the OPNFV Community aware of Python 2 dependencies
in your projects and any Upstream projects when you find them,
and send mail to the OPNFV tech discuss list with subject:

 Python 2 Dependencies

Ideally, all project & Upstream checks should be conducted by
Oct 8, with forgiveness to those currently on holiday.

If you have questions, please ask your friendly TSC members.
Thank you for your help with this important community matter!

for the TSC,
Al

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [vsperf] VSPERF weekly meeting - 11 Sep 2019 (ww111)

2019-09-13 Thread Al Morton
Hi Pierre,

Thanks for your question:

  * You indicate testing of parallel VMs or pods. Where is that required? I
haven’t seen that implied anywhere…
Since the exposed metrics are composed as “per VNF-C” and others,
there may be a linear range of throughput per XXX, where for example

   Throughput(two VM) = 2 x Throughput(one VM)

up to some threshold of parallel VMs, and above that limit
some other relationship exists. So you’re right that no one
said (yet) that we have to test in this way, but I’m thinking
ahead to reporting the results with a range of applicability.
Obviously, configuration influences the relationships, too.

This dialog is about clarifying the specifications, and we
can see from your questions that some clarification is needed
whether the exposed performance metrics cite a standard like TST009,
or not (applies to all your remaining questions, on max flows
and other aspects).

regards,
Al

Hi Al,

I’ve taken a quick look at the wiki page, and have a few questions:

  * You indicate testing of parallel VMs or pods. Where is that required? I
haven’t seen that implied anywhere…
  *   Same question for bi-directional testing…

As for the table 4-4 in the CNTT document (I guess these questions are more for
the authors, just thought I would bring them up here)

  * For the max simultaneous flows metric, would the max be determined by the
“next” one dropping, or by misbehavior of the existing flows (ie. Higher
latency)
  * For the max new flow rate, I have always thought that was more of a
control plane test (ie. TCP in this case). Is that part of NFVI?
  * Network latency is defined as “round trip”. I am guessing they mean the
packet is sent to the NFVI by the test device, NFVI switches it back out and
then it’s received by the test device? I’ve always looked at that as a
unidirectional test (end to end) because it’s sent by one end and received by
one other end.

Thanks,

Pierre

[opnfv-tech-discuss] CNTT-RI Proposal comments

2019-09-11 Thread Al Morton
Hi Mike,

I'm following-up with a few comments on the CNTT-RI proposal text.
(Manuel - some overlap with your comments on the Wiki page, Mike
and I discussed this set last night).

https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/PROJ/Project+Proposals%3A+CNTT-RI
Working Top to bottom:

In the Detailed mission list:

Develop test-cases and tools for testing RI. These test cases and tools could
be used by the compliance program for verification and compliance.

I understand there will be no CNTT-RI tool development,
so "and tools" should go...

Then:
As the Common NFVi initiative matures, project scope is expected to grow
significantly. This project will periodically review scope and make
recommendations to the TSC as to whether it should be split into multiple
projects focusing on different areas, or whether it should remain a top level
project of OPNFV.

The OPNFV project structure is flat; we have Working Groups that coordinate
across multiple projects, but this is a project like any other.
I suggest:
s/top-level project/single project/

In the Scope:

  * Work with testing projects, provide test requirements and test cases for
RI testing

This seems right, so this is why I suggest to remove "and tools"
from the Detailed Mission above, for consistency. No changes to this item.

At the end of the Scope, I suggest to add:

OPNFV Testing Projects that are already looking to meet CNTT
requirements with new features should continue to do so.

I suggest to add a heading
Proposed Meeting Frequency:
 Weekly

To save you a few minutes, I executed the changes after our brief
e-mail exchange.

thanks, and good luck as PTL,
Al

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [test-wg] Potential Discussion of CNTT-related tests and measurements

2019-08-28 Thread Al Morton
We'll have the meeting as planned, and move the discussion
forward. Only a few have RSVP'd, but all are welcome.

The meeting will take place Thursday, August 29,
at 8AM PDT, 11AM EDT in the US, which seems to
be 1700 CEST and rather late in APAC zones.

Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/5014627785
Access Code: 5014627785
IRC channel: #opnfv-testperf @ Freenode

Notes:
1. This zoom meeting still appears to work, let's hope
that state continues through Thursday, and there is no conflict.
2. Al *may* be a few/unpredictable minutes late, but will
endeavor to make the number of minutes = 0. It depends on
factors that are beyond my control.

See the single item Agenda where meeting notes will be posted:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/meetings/Test+Working+Group+Bi-Weekly+Meeting
(I'm editing this page now)

is the focus. This is a follow-up to discussion
today at the Weekly Technical Discussion #150,
where Trevor Cooper gave an overview of some
key questions emerging from the CNTT meeting
last week and earlier developments.

The meeting is planned for Thursday, August 29,
at 8AM PDT, 11AM EDT in the US, which seems to
be 1700 CEST and rather late in APAC zones.

Please reply (to me only!! don't SPAM the lists!!)
with your availability for this discussion
by end of day Tuesday, Aug 27,
and we'll see what we can do this week based on replies.

thanks,
Al

+1 from me. I'm not sure if we need a vote but you have my support as a PTL
(Pharos) of OPNFV Infra WG (as Security project is part of Infra WG).

Ash knows the role and topic (security) very well and worked alongside me on a

time. I can't think of a better engineer to take up the role as PTL.

Hello,

I would like to notify the TSC that I wish to step down as Security PTL.

I have not been active in the role for a long time now, so this very much makes

I have also changed responsibilities with Red Hat that mean I would not have
the time needed, should the role start to demand attention again in the future.

It's been a pleasure working with you all and I would happily mentor anyone
interested in the position of security manager. All aspects of the role are
very well documented too.

I am not familiar with the current off-boarding process, but the main tasks I
see are removing my name from some of the confluence pages / wiki we have.

There is also the anteater project, which we can depreciate should you like or
keep using. I guess the former, as I made a release a while ago, but it was
never pulled into the opnfv jobs.

I would like to nominate Al Morton for a seat on the TSC.

Al Morton's contributions since early on have helped guide testing in OPNFV. He
has been instrumental in VSPERFs impact including collaboration with ETSI NFV
(resulting in ETSI GS NFV TST009 revision in May 2019) as well as development
of RFC8204 (2017). Al has vast experience and accumulated wisdom in the
communications industry relating to performance, testing and much more. This
along with his leadership roles in related specification organizations will be
extremely valuable to help guide the OPNFV technical community as we evolve to
the next phase of OPNFV.

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [vsperf] VSPERF weekly meeting - 03 Jul 2019 (ww104)

2019-07-03 Thread Al Morton
VSPERFer's,

I have updated the Alt.Speed wiki page
https://wiki.opnfv.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=29098781

to include the Network name-space config used
in today's demo. We saw iperf3 and udpst_v23
tools, neither of which use dpdk, able to
run client and server on the same host, produce
measurements at 1 second intervals.
udpst with full Debug demonstrated reports
at 50ms intervals, too.

I forgot to disable jumbo frames on udpst
(there is an option to keep the frame size below 1500)
and that probably caused the ~1Gbps limit on sending rate
(fragmentation). The links between node 4 and node 5
have MTU 1500:
eno3: flags=4163 mtu 1500

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Opening nominations for the OPNFV Technical Steering Committee #election

2019-06-26 Thread Al Morton
Hi David and OPNFV,

I would like to Nominate Trevor Cooper of Intel, for TSC.

Trevor’s many contributions to the TSC over the last year
and his membership in the Strategic Planning Committee,
SPC, makes this one of the more obvious nominations
for the new TSC in 2019.

Trevor’s observations and suggestions as we approach the
work of CNTT and GSMA Reference Platforms have been valuable.
Trevor has been with us in OPNFV since the beginning, and
has fulfilled many leadership roles in Test-WG, Pharos,
VSPERF, and others. It’s clear that Trevor’s ideas and
solutions have helped us become the Organization we are
today, and it’s likely we all want to see him continue.

(Trevor has agreed to accept this nomination.)

my best regards to all,
Al

Subject: [opnfv-tech-discuss] Opening nominations for the OPNFV Technical
Steering Committee #election

Today,

In accordance with the
schedule
approved by TSC, we begin nominations for a new TSC, consisting of 15 members,
per the Community Election
Procedure.
Nominations will close on July 9 at 5 p.m. (Pacific).

Both the nominator and the nominee must be an active contributor, defined as
having a score of at least 20 on this
list.
Alternatively, per the election procedure, a person may be an active
contributor if an exception was requested for them by a PTL during the active
contributor data review period that concludes today. This is indicated by a
comment in the notes column of the
list.

You may nominate yourself, or another individual, as long as that individual
agrees to the nomination. To submit a nomination, please reply to this email
and include the nominees name, organization, and a brief statement about the
nominees qualifications and contributions.

As I received nominations, I will post the information to this wiki
page.

Thank you for your participation in this important activity for the OPNFV
community. Please let me know if you have any questions.

David

Hi Sridhar and all,

I have added our project meeting to the LFV DDF Schedule:
https://wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/LN/June+2019+LFN+DDF+Schedule

Several people will join, and we can expect that some people
will attend for the first time, so I suggest a quick (5 min)
"What is VSPERF?" as Agenda Item 0.

Thanks,
Al

PS: Sridhar: You already have the "What is VSPERF?"

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [availability] large scale availability test in OPNFV

2019-03-19 Thread Al Morton
Hi fuqiao,

Regarding this test:
1.1 Create a certain number of VM (e.g. about 50) in parallel, and trigger
continuous creation of this group of VM once the previous VMs are finished.
Calculate the number of VM we can eventually create when reach a certain
deadline of T. See if all the VM can be connected through subnet after creation.

Gabriel presented some Life-cycle exercise tests in during the
Fraser Plgufest/Hackfest/Joint ETSI Plugtest™ .
It seems that the results are not captured in the report:
https://www.opnfv.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2018/09/OPNFV_ETSI_Report_FINAL.pdf

or in the slides from the Plugfest:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/EVNT/Fraser+Plugfest+Schedule?preview=/20745096/24576179/Monitoring%20OPNFV%20Long%20Duration%20Test.pdf

IIRC, the creation groups of VM used were small, and the duration of the
test was not very long before a failure occurred that resulted in
test termination.

It would be good to review these results again, and this seems like
a very reasonable topic for testing. Likely projects are Yardstick
or Bottlenecks.

OPNFV

Hi, all. I would like to trigger some discussion about large scale availability
testing in OPNFV. With the large deployment of NFVi in Operators network, we
gradually realized it is one thing to test small scale NFVi in lab, and it is
definitely another thing to deploy large scale NFVi in real network
environment. Therefore, availability and performance testing for large scale
NFVi deployment is very important.
I try to create a wiki page to list some of the test requirements I can think
of. And I would hope the test WG to see if these cases can be realized by the
current test framework for OPNFV? Or if we need further work on these?

Re: [opnfv-tech-discuss] [opnfv-tsc] Speaker needed for opnfv edge cloud project at developer meetup on April 2nd

2019-03-16 Thread Al Morton
Catching up...

I admit that I harbored some confusion about
the specific meeting that this e-mail thread
recruited speaker(s) to cover.

I agree that Trevor’s suggestion:
I think a wider discussion on collaboration between OPNFV and other
Edge Cloud projects (e.g. Akraino) would also be good.

would be good to cover during the OPNFV
Developer Gathering – it certainly has
strategic implications that we could
discuss efficiently at this face2face
opportunity.

@Qihui … ok.

News to me … the presentation is actually for Out of Box Network Developer
Meetup Group. The next monthly meetup happens to be the same time and same
venue as OPNFV Developer Gathering which is what I thought this was about.

Thanks you guys for your responce. we appreciate.

Thank you Bin for help to clarify my problem. And yes, the presentation would
be about opnfv edge cloud project (sorry to make you confused by including
openstack mailinglist)~~

@Trevor, if it is OK for you, it's glad to have you as our speaker. Thanks a
lot.
I will send out the slides in the next one or two weeks and we can have one or
two page about cooperation between different edge projects (openstack edge,
akraino etc.) for discussion.

The original request is to introduce OPNFV Edge Cloud project because neither

Qihui will prepare the slides deck as indicated in original email request.

Hope it clarifies what the ask is according to the original email.

No calendar invites yet this year, just mail and updates on

Subject: Re: [test-wg] Future Testing WG meeting logistics was{RE: status of
test working group meeting?}

Hi all, as a Reminder ...

I’ll determine if we have a Quorum of Testers
on Wednesday, to give time for a meeting announcement
(or cancellation) to reach everyone before the proposed
Thursday meeting.

Let everyone know your plans here:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/meetings/Test+Working+Group+Weekly+Meeting<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__wiki.opnfv.org_display_meetings_Test-2BWorking-2BGroup-2BWeekly-2BMeeting=DwMGaQ=LFYZ-o9_HUMeMTSQicvjIg=_6cen3Hn-e_hOm0BhY7aIpA58dd19Z9qGQsr8-6zYMI=G-JXRHP7Gc_QSC6O5pFieALOPFe_uAxDCrf-_Yc84f4=wOT9K_7eksnIYQPfqt-_ClrlzrTQIdKSqvghWJY34Ck=>
(partial responses in the table are acceptable at this point).

thanks,
Al
