OT: Oracle to DB2 books?

2002-04-11 Thread Brian Wisniewski

I checked bookpool and amazon and can't seem to find any decent books
for experienced DBA's who need to learn UDB/DB2. Has anyone found a
decent book for Oracle DBA's needing to learn UDB? Since my company
has chosen UDB for 'strategic' reasons on an upcoming project I need to
learn this product. I'm about to download IBM's CBT but would like to
have a book to read also.

Thanks - Brian

Re: executing unix commands from PL/SQL

2001-11-12 Thread Brian Wisniewski

Larry's link to asktom is where I got started however I made the
mistake of telling the developers about this before I realized the
implications and major security hole.

This grants tissd privs to execute ksh scripts from within
/gw/prodn/tissd/code/ksh/

begin
dbms_java.grant_permission
('TISSD',
'java.io.FilePermission',
'/usr/bin/ksh',
'execute');
--
dbms_java.grant_permission
('TISSD',
'java.io.FilePermission',
'/gw/prodn/tissd/code/ksh/-',
'execute');
--
dbms_java.grant_permission
('TISSD',
'java.lang.RuntimePermission',
'-',
'writeFileDescriptor');
--
end;
/

Now your favorite developer is pissed about you not giving him dba
privs within the database so he's gonna mess with you by creating the
following shell script within the dir mentioned above.

#!/usr/bin/ksh

rm -rf /u01/app/oracle/*

Now if he tried to execute this from the OS it wouldn't allow him to
remove anything from /u01/ since he's not oracle or part of the dba
group.

However, he creates a simple java stored proc (see asktom) to call out
to the OS to execute this script. When you call out to the OS from
within java guess who it is executing as ??? That's right - ORACLE!
Hasta la vista database files. I yelled at Oracle about this and they
were going to write up an informational note! This is such a security
hazard, at least within 8.1.7 (I doubt it is changed in 9i), that it
isn't even funny what someone could do.

Be careful what you grant to whom!

I think execute on /usr/bin/ls is ok but other than that...

Re: What is Quorum device ? (not Oracle)

2001-06-08 Thread Brian Wisniewski

Sindary, I didn't see a reply from anyone else your question so I'll
take a stab at it but I have very limited knowledge about this so don't
take it as doctrine.

A quorum device is a disk that is shared between clustered servers to
keep cluster configuration information current. I also think it is
dependent upon the servers O/S as to how it is implemented and if the
quorum device can be used for user data or not.

From Sun.

quorum device
A disk shared by two or more nodes that contributes votes used to
establish a quorum for the cluster to run. The cluster can operate only
when a quorum of votes is available. The quorum device is used when a
cluster becomes partitioned into separate sets of nodes to establish
which set of nodes constitutes the new cluster.

Cluster Members FAQ

Is the order in which nodes are booted significant?

In most cases, no. However, the boot order is important to prevent
amnesia (refer to Quorum and Quorum Devices for details on amnesia).
For example, if node two was the owner of the quorum device and node
one is down, and then you bring node two down, you must bring up node
two before bringing back node one. This prevents you from accidentally
bringing up a node with out of date cluster configuration information.

Take a look at this link for more in-depth information.

SOLVED: dbms_java and file permissions

2001-06-07 Thread Brian Wisniewski

For those of you interested in this thread.

Here is my conclusion.

Some of my initial tests were flawed with files not existing that I
thought existed and strange results from executing the procedure.
While this is valid from the O/S /usr/bin/ls /u20/app/oracle/* , it
doesn't work from within the procedure exec rc('/usr/bin/ls
/u20/app/oracle/*') (return code 2). So I thought access was being
limited and I had to grant permissions in one case and try to restrict
them in another when it is just a caveat that was throwing me off.

I re-read the security section from the Java Developers Guide. What I
was getting hung up on was Example 5-2 Limiting Permissions on page
5-10. For example, if you want to allow access to all files within
the /tmp directory - except for your password file that exists in that
directory - you would grant permission for read and write to all files
within /tmp and limit read and write access to the password file

I didn't realize this was for Java access to files, I thought this was
limiting all access. When I granted execute on /usr/bin/* the call to
the O/S operates under the execute permissions for the /usr/bin pgm and
since the files are just parameters to the executables (ls,mv,etc) file
security is subverted.

I still think this is a major issue that could be better communicated
(Like in an Oracle Note) versus being found out by trial and error.

Given this I would never grant execute permission on mv, cp, rm, etc
from /usr/bin to anyone other than to a dba.

Re: dbms_java and file permissions

2001-06-06 Thread Brian Wisniewski
Thanks for taking a shot Jared. I'm just starting with Java, learnin' as I go.
Sorry I didn't post the query initially. It was basically a select * from dba_java_policy wheregrantee = 'TISSD'.
External calls to the OS will be as the oracle user which would be hard to limit however it is happening in certain situations and I don't know this for a fact but I believe these calls shouldn't make it to the OS if there are restrictions. I may be off on that but /export/home/oracle is also owned by Oracle and I wasn't allowed to do an ls on that directory unless I had explicitely granted permission to it. Also I can't do an ls on /u20/app/oracle/testjunk.file which is explictly restricted (still owned by Oracle on OS) but I can still ls the directory (even though I tried to restrict access) or even move the file. Strange.
Here's the response I got from Metalink forums.
Hi. This issue must be handled by an analyst in the Internet Languages group. Unfortunately at this time we do not have technical forum support for Internet Languages within MetaLink. For assistance from Oracle Support on this issue, you will need to log an iTAR. iTAR functionality is accessible via the TARs option on MetaLink Home.
I'lltry the TAR approach and see if I get anywhere.
Thanks again - Brian

App/web login - how do you handle?

2001-05-30 Thread Brian Wisniewski

How do you handle logins for applications that log into the database
using a common login? I've seen it handled through hard-coded
username/pass in the app, password file in 'secure' directories and
ops$ account with remote_os_authent set to true on a server being
accessed from a 3rd tier web app. Mgmt didn't seemed too thrilled when
I showed them in about 2 minutes how to break into the db when
remote_os_authent=true.

Just curious how you handle this. I haven't seen any particularly
great way and am looking for a better solution. V7.3.4 - 8.1.7

Re: Nothing to do with Oracle : But is is very important : Your reaction please

2001-05-22 Thread Brian Wisniewski

I suppose this is an invalid address but keep this crap off of the
Oracle-L list. You will likely find little sympathy using this spam
approach.

Both sides in this conflict have a significant amount of blame to
accept. Violence breeds violence. Throwing rocks, blowing up innocent
civilians, shooting babies will solve nothing but neither side seems to
understand this.

OT: Heard of Peregrine Power Enterprise?

2001-05-15 Thread Brian Wisniewski

Anyone out there had experience with Peregrine Software's Power
Enterprise? I just started at a new client and got thrown onto a
project which will be using this on Oracle. They chose this package,
don't have technical details about it, don't have the software but the
developers plan on installing it as 'just another schema' into a
database. I hate to crush them so early on but if I must.

Anyhow Peregrine's web site was a useless bunch of mumbo-jumbo about
pragmatic B2B CRM e-commerce e-procurement e-marketplace software.

Please email me offline if you have any info.

Thanks - Brian

RE: Oracle vs DB2 - Oracle lost on cost

2001-04-25 Thread Brian Wisniewski

The client I work for (for the next 2 weeks at least) just made the
decision to use UDB over Oracle due to the price of licenses from
Oracle. And this is a startup with a big ol' pile of capital. Go
figure, I thought startup's always picked the most expensive stuff.
They must be saving on the DB for the skating rink.

Actually there was a correction to the story where this note was taken
from. Leisure Suit Larry lost $36 billion, not the mere $16 billion as
originally stated. So I guess that would be closer to 3 million VW's.

** A Moment Of Sympathy For Those Much More Fortunate

Investors have had a hard time lately, as the stock markets
wallow at a fraction of the value they were a year ago, and the
Nasdaq regularly hits new lows. Fortunately, there's a little
solace for those who blew their vacation fund on a now-worthless
IPO or who passed out after checking their 401(k) balance. An
examination of some high-profile losers by the Reuters news
service and Thompson Financial analyst Kevin Schwenger may give
 them company, if not sympathy.

Take, for instance, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates. His 700
million shares in Microsoft halved in value during 2000--he lost
around $39 billion. That's enough to buy a 13-inch television for
every man, woman, and child in the United States. Or to buy more
than a thousand F-18E Super Hornet fighter jets.

"It used to be that if a hundred-dollar bill dropped on the
ground, Bill Gates made so much money that it would not be
financially wise for him to take the time to pick it up," says
Wit Soundview analyst Arnie Berman. "That's now changed to where
he should pick up hundreds, but not fifties."

Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer has been a little more fortunate,
losing only $12 billion. You could have bought 48 million copies
of Windows 2000 with that, Steve. But it wasn't just Microsoft
execs who took it in the wallet. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison could
own 1 million brand-new VW Beetles with the $16 billion he lost.
Theodore Waitt, CEO of Gateway, would have to work 900 million
hours at minimum wage to earn back his $4.7 billion loss. And
Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos saw his 117 million shares in the
online retail giant drop in value more than 84%, to a trifling
$1.2 billion, killing his ability to buy everyone in Mexico a
 Razor scooter.

But temper your schadenfreude. Berman reminds us that
sinking stock values mean more than just reduced personal wealth.
He points out that when a stock becomes less valued, it can make
it harder for a company to make acquisitions and attract strong
employees through stock offers. - David M. Ewalt

Load LOB's w/ SQL*Loader problem

2001-03-22 Thread Brian Wisniewski

8.1.7/Win2000

While loading a table with small tiff images (6k - 15K, out of line
Blob) and supporting data using SQL*loader we experienced a problem
that some of the images getting loaded aren't matching up with the
supporting data. Row 95 has the images from Row 1985, etc. Appears to
be random problem. Some images are correct, others are not.

Got rid of the readsize and bindsize and let them default and a test
load of 5000 images looked like everything loaded OK. Now testing full
load of 200,000 to see if that fixes the problem. Went from commit
point of 5000 records down to 23 now that the read and bindsize are
defaulting.

Any ideas as to why this might be happening? I'm offsite and working
with them over the phone but will be heading in tonight so any ideas or
thoughts you have I can try out tonight.

Thanks - Brian

Re: Anyone used Fail Safe for NT?

2001-03-06 Thread Brian Wisniewski

This was for a single database on a Compaq cluster (active/passive) but
I don't see any problems with multiple databases.. I didn't do the
install of failsafe, but it looks pretty straightforward. I got called
in because the database wasn't failing over to the other server in the
cluster. I had to copy some of the .ora files and such to the other
server and had to muck around in the registery a little to set up the
failover machine but it was pretty easy.

The sysadmins had the hardware failing over by the time I got there so
that wasn't an issue but I had to have them make sure the shared drives
were available in the failover machine before the database was
restarted.

email me if you want any specifics.

Re: process parameter

2001-02-27 Thread Brian Wisniewski

Raman, this isn't a settable parameter within AIX. The post-wait
kernel extension takes care of this.

Taken from the installation guide..

Oracle Post-Wait Kernel Extension

The Oracle post-wait kernel extension implements an optimized mechanism
of inter-process communications without the overhead of signal handlers
or semaphores. The Oracle post-wait kernel extension is loaded into the
kernel at system startup and remains loaded as long as the system is
running. It is used by all Oracle instances running on the system.
This section explains how to install and debug the kernel extension. As
long as you run rootpre.sh from the latest version of the Oracle RDBMS
available to you, there is no need to worry about these details,
because rootpre.sh will take care of them.

this into a shell and loop through the oracle processes to find out who
is being a hog.

Type refers to persistent pages (i.e. files) or work pages. The SGA
consists of work segments of description sreg[?], with sreg[3] being
the first one.
The number of SGA pages that are paged out can be calculated by
substracting Inuse pages from PGspace. In this example, we have 763
total SGA pages (4KB each), and 763-762=1 page that is paged out.

Re: What is limit on Search Condition in DBA_CONSTRAINTS table

2001-02-23 Thread Brian Wisniewski

I don't know what version you are on and I only have access to an 8.1.7
database right now but the search_condition column is a long so a set
long ... would fix this problem in 8.1.7.

To answer your question about underlying tables dba_constraints joins
user$, con$, cdef$ (where the actual condition is stored) and obj$

How can we see the rest of the Search Condition?
Is there an underlying table that this view is based on?

Re: Degree of Parallelism: 0?

2001-02-14 Thread Brian Wisniewski

Lisa, are the servers actually running or are the idle? If you have
parallel_min_servers set to something other than 0 then you will still
see the servers in v$pq_sysstat they will just remain idle.

I'm not sure about the degree 0, I was thinking it was the same as 1
(no parallelism) but I tried setting it in 8.1.7 and 8.0.5.2.1 to 0 and
I received an error message.

RE: Primary Keys

2001-02-01 Thread Brian Wisniewski

I don't know if my prior email made it out to the list or not.

In 99% of the rows the Primary key will be a combination of 2 fields
however they cannot be 100% sure this concatenated key will always be
unique therefore the need for the surrogate key.

From what I've gathered the PK will usually be columns 1 and 2 but at
other times it will be 2 and 3 and somehow they've got this all figured
out.

It is possible if I add the date field to the other two fields it will
always be a unique key but I need to talk to those who are familiar
with the data to discuss.

They just wanted me to come in and set up Oracle, fail safe, backup and
recovery, partitioning, database layout etc.

The question about the need for the PK was just something that came up
and I didn't see a need for it based upon how they will be storing and
querying data. They will never be querying off of the surrogate key,
the table won't be partitioned off of it, there are no children tables
hanging off of this, no snapshots, etc.

How are you going to retrieve the data in these tables for your

A surrogate key as you are describing is valid in many instances if
 for no
other reason that to make the model much cleaner. There are many
 occasions
where the 'live-and-die' relational rules have to be bent to meet
 real world
 problems.

I know this violates the most basic data modeling techniques but tell
 me what you think.

I'm working on creating a new database which will be fairly small in
number of tables ~8 but large in storage size ~4 terabytes with
 millions of records eventually.

The 3 large tables will hold small images along with supporting data
and the only reason I can see to have a primary key is to have a
primary key. There is not a natural key for the tables so it would
 be
a sequence which would never be selected against. Given the number of
records all I can see it doing is taking up space, increase the time
 of
the imports, generate more redo logs, etc and I can't see the
 benefits.

There won't be any tables hanging off of these, I won't be using
snapshots, replication or anything else I can think of that would
require a PK but the voice 'YOU MUST HAVE A PRIMARY KEY' is
 resounding
loudly in my head so I must ask why?

 Tell me what you think.

 Thanks
