ADMIN: Summary of donations

2001-10-01 Thread Bruce Bergman

Hi everyone --

Well, it's been an challenging month for all of us, hasn't it? ;-) I
promised to give you all a summary, and my apologies for taking so long to
get back to you on this. The postal donations took a while to get to me,
and I'm actually still getting PayPal donations even today, so it's taken a
while to add everything up. Then there was that unfortunate event on the
east coast. It didn't seem appropriate to talk about all the donations I
was getting in the face of all of that, especially as I imagine many of you
have graciously donated to charities in support of that relief effort, or
had your own challenges to face. I hope everyone is safe and cared
following the events that transpired.

As was evidenced by the outpouring of support when I first posted, you guys
have come through with amazing generosity. The PayPal donations totalled
$1700, and the postal donations totalled about $500 more. The breakdown by
type was 54 one-time, 6 monthly and 3 one-time plus monthly. Obviously, the
vast majority of the donations were one-time donations, although the people
that agreed to donate for a number of months were enthusiastic. Those will
be incredibly helpful. Several people wanted to start hosting a website
with Fat City, which is really awesome, and to all of you, I will be getting
back to you this week. If you're one of ones who expressed an interest at
hosting at Fat City, I'm ready for you now. :-)

As I promised, I went ahead and moved Fat City into its temporary home in
the colocation facility. The new dedicated connection is under
construction, but probably won't be finished until mid or late October. In
the meantime, I'm working hard on improving the services, adding account
maintenance tools, etc. You should be noticing some speed improvements, but
the best are yet to come. I will again notify the list when there is any
anticipated downtime. There might be some downtime this weekend, but I'm
not scheduling anything as of yet.

I'll keep you informed of any new information. Again, thank everyone for
your support.

cheers,
bruce

ADMIN: LISTSERVES GOING DOWN AT 4PM PDT

2001-09-07 Thread Bruce Bergman

Per the Service Announcement indicated on our website, all of our servers
will be going down at 4pm PDT today to move to their new (temporary)
location in the colocation facility. The expected outage should be no more
than 4 hours (hopefully just one hour!), but there may be some glitches --
please be patient. I chose this time to minimize list interruption, since
everything usually slows down for the weekend.

See you soon!

ADMIN: It has been decided...

2001-08-31 Thread Bruce Bergman

Due to the overwhelming generosity of the ORACLE-L list members, I have
decided to take the plunge and move up to the big leagues. :-) The response
really was amazing, and again I thank each and every one of you, whether you
offered to donate funds or merely gave a word of encouragement. Everything
was appreciated.

I've tried to make it easy for everyone to contribute. I've set up a web
page where you can go to find out your options for sending money. I suspect
the majority of you will use PayPal, so I've set up a direct link to PayPal
on that page. If you are making a one-time donation, just click on the
leftmost PayPal logo. If you've said you'll donate for several months,
enter the amount you want to donate each month and click on the rightmost
PayPal logo. International members can use PayPal also (I think there are
like 35 countries that PayPal supports). If you aren't a PayPal member,
I've also included a link where you can sign up (it's free). The web page
includes options for postal mailing, anonymous donations, etc. Go to:

http://www.fatcity.com/ListGuru/Donate

If you have any questions, problems or concerns, please contact me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Again, I'll be getting back to all of you as I can. If you've asked me a
specific question, I will respond shortly.

Thanks everyone!

ADMIN: Update on donations...

2001-08-30 Thread Bruce Bergman

Hi again everyone...

Jared and I are both truly honored and bowled over with the response that
has been generated to this call for help! You folks are a generous and
caring group of people, and I can't tell you how much it means to me that
you've offered your help. There are literally almost a hundred responses to
this issue, and Jared and I have a big task ahead of us of totalling up
everything and sorting through the list traffic. I wish I could respond to
everyone personally, but at this point it is quite overwhelming. I WILL get
back to each and every one of you over the weekend or perhaps next week.
Please know that you have my heartfelt thanks for every message, and I will
personally respond to each message. It just takes a bit to get back to
everyone. :-)

Many of you suggested the idea of having a way for list members to
contribute on a yearly or monthly basis to keep the list afloat. Jared and
I have discussed this in depth, and we both feel very strongly about keeping
the list free of any kind of yearly or monthly charges. Don't get me wrong
-- I appreciate the idea! It's just a very complicated management problem.
I've been down this road before and know the route intimately. A few years
back, one of my lists wanted to do exactly the same thing, and started to
work out a mechanism for accomplishing that. I agreed to help out. Within
two months, it literally became a nightmare of sorting through
contributions, educating new members, dealing with unhappy members that
wanted to leave the list and get their money back, hundreds of checks and
cash, international money issues, feelings of preferential treatment, etc.
And that list was only 250 subscribers! We dropped it after only four
months, and everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief. It's a super idea, but
just very hard to implement in practice. Someone else on the list posted
essentially the same comment, and they are entirely correct. The Amazon
donation idea is closest to something that could work, but even then there
are a lot of questions and coordination issues to work out.

Regardless, Jared and I both want this list to remain free. And I think
that's only fair, given how you folks are contributing and giving of your
own pocket to make sure it remains available to people. Now if, say a year
from now, there is a compelling reason to ask for monthly or yearly
contributions, we will reconsider it (I don't expect that though). The best
thing that can help us right now is either one-time contributions or a
monthly contribution for five months. The vast majority of you are coming
up with one-time contributions, which is just great. A couple people have
signed up for web hosting, which is even better. No matter how the
contributions come in, they will definitely help. Again, thanks for the
suggestions, however. For now, the ORACLE-L list will remain a free and
public list that anyone can join and use.

Several people have asked me to tell them how much to contribute. I'm not
comfortable with that, because I don't know your situation personally, and I
would much rather have you decide what you can afford. Don't be worried
about feeling like you are below or above the average. I am not keeping
tabs on individuals. This is quite akin to me just passing the hat around
the circle and seeing what ends up in the hat. I don't have any set
expectations or ideas for anyone.

I plan on posting a results message on Friday (tomorrow) outlining what my
decision is. At that time I will give you details about where you can send
checks or cash, or how you can use PayPal to use credit cards. I don't want
to collect ANY funds from anyone until I am sure this can work. I
appreciate everyone who wants to send money now, but it really wouldn't be
fair to you if I accepted your money before everything has been cast in
concrete. Please stay tuned.

I will talk to you all tomorrow, then!

thanks much,
bruce

ADMIN: List status, bounces, archives

2001-08-09 Thread Bruce Bergman

Yes, the lists were down virtually all night (Pacific time). I had been
doing some work on the server around midnight and maybe an hour after I
called it quits, the server locked up. Sorry for the span of silence and
the ensuing rush of E-mail that is *still* being sent out. All should be
well shortly.

Yes, some of you were bounced. novicedba@hotmail was bounced because
his/her mailbox was too full (over quota) to accept new messages (a problem
with using free E-mail, I know). You folks using free E-mail services need
to watch to make sure your mailbox doesn't fill up. On a high traffic list
like this one, it's easy to do, and if you get over quota, ListGuru will
bounce you. DBarbour was bounced because of transient delivery failures in
getting the mail to your site. Normally I don't give public reasons for
bounces, but since those two asked in a public forum, I figure they were
fair game. ;-)

Finally, a reminder that there ARE archives at our site. Go to
http://www.fatcity.com/ListGuru and sign up if you haven't already (it's
free). You can then browse old archives, search, etc. The archives are in
a wide-beta, and work is ongoing virtually daily, but you should be able to
mutz around with a minimum of hassle. Feedback, suggestions, requests for
certain features, criticism, etc., are all welcome and appreciated.

A major new release of the archive site will be made next week. One of the
cool features you'll see is the ability to find out if there are any
problems
with the list server, which lists are closed, etc. Stay tuned.

thanks,
bruce

ADMIN: Virus (it's NOT on the list)

2001-06-27 Thread Bruce Bergman

Hi folks...

I've checked the list and the virus is NOT being propagated via the list.
The person with the infection is sending replies to all of you individually.
Each time you post a message to the list, your message is re-sent to
him/her, and the virus on their computer is sending you a reply with a copy
of the virus.

The list is virus free. Please do not spread rumors! ;-)

Also, note that ListGuru filters out *most* viruses, so they should not
reach you. As the majority of the E-mail virus scanners simply look for
filenames or suspicious content, many will be accidently set off even though
no virus actually exists in the list message. Just be aware of this fact
for future reference.

thanks,
bruce

ADMIN: **IMPORTANT** About dis-invited subscribers

2001-06-27 Thread Bruce Bergman

Folks...

It is very important that you all read and adhere to this message.

The list may have had a problem recently with a hacker, and/or viruses from
an unknown source. The potential abusers have been removed, so we have a
small window of opportunity to make sure this doesn't escalate. The only
way to deal with hackers and/or spammers is to completely ignore them. No
matter how you are baited or goaded into a discussion, you must absolutely
ignore them. Do not reply to their messages. Do not argue with them. Do
not call them names or otherwise involve them in any discussion.

In consultation with Jared (owner of this list), we would ask that you
please do not continue any further discussion on the topic of hackers,
viruses, spammers, idiots, etc. It is important to nip this in the bud if
we are to head off future problems.

A determined hacker can easily get back on this list, just as easily as they
can bring this list to its knees. In order to make sure we don't have
problems in the future, we are asking for your cooperation in not escalating
this topic any further.

If you have problems or issues on this topic, you can E-mail Jared or myself
PRIVATELY.

thanks,
bruce

ADMIN: Please vote (was: RE: OT SPAM : Become an Oracle Certified DBA in 5 Weeks)

2001-06-14 Thread Bruce Bergman

I too got it, so I'm presuming they harvested this list. I'll take a look
into the logs when I return from this business trip I'm on. I appreciate
all the confirming responses. Should I find that they harvested the list,
they will be removed and banned from all lists here (this is policy).

However, it's becoming apparent that more spammers find this list useful and
harvest from it. I have the ability to hide the subscriber list from
everyone. I don't typically do this because there are legitimate reasons to
allow people to view the subscriber list. In cases of abuse, it's a common
(and effective) way to mitigate the problem. If I hide it, no one will be
able to directly harvest addresses.

I'll take a short vote. Please respond to me privately (here at this
address) if you would prefer to have the subscriber list kept open to
anyone, or closed to everyone. I'll close the voting on the 19th. Remember!
Don't reply to the list!! :-)

Note that this doesn't affect your ability to join or leave the list; it
only affects your ability to do a WHO on the list.

bruce

Re: list stats?

 Subject: list stats?

OK, oh great list god, do we have the stats for who posts and what the top
subjects are?

Sounds like a great idea! ;-)

I've added a Top 20 feature to the beta web access site. It now shows who
the Top 20 authors for the past 7 days and the past month, and a Top 20
subjects in the same time periods. Just select ORACLE-L from your My
Lists page and you should see the two new choices. Try it out!

As a result of adding this, I found a bug in the archiver program where it
occasionally adds a subject line as an author, so I'll try to get that fixed
in the next week or so. You wouldn't notice it except in unusual conditions
while using the search feature. Thanks for helping find the bug! ;-)

ADMIN: 2nd Beta of web-based ODTUG archives now available

2001-05-15 Thread Bruce Bergman

Hello everyone...

I have just finished making some changes to the ListGuru web-based archive
facility (http://www.fatcity.com/ListGuru), if anyone would like to try it
out. There are about 180 people who have signed up for the first beta, so I
know some of you should be able to give it a whirl. Much of what has been
fixed or changed is in response to the comments from the first beta testers.

If you'd like to join this beta test, please go to
http://www.fatcity.com/ListGuru/SignUp.php and fill out the form.

What has been done:

 - fixed the problem with searching on subject lines
 - added ability to search based on author
 - clicking on a message opens it in a new window
 - added in missing ODTUG lists (-WEBDEV, -JAVA, all the rest)
 - added in the ORACLE-L and ORACLE-LINUX-L mailing lists
 - added all list archives back to 1997

What still is broken:

 - browsing digests based on year
 - reading today's digest when it contains HTML
 - viewing table of contents is improperly formatted

Please understand that not all of the site is currently working. I'd
recommend you stick to the Search capability and try to exercise that
aspect. Feedback would be appreciated on what could be better, nicer, more
useful, etc.

thanks,
bruce
