RE: PATCH?

2002-04-29 Thread Fisher, Julie

That is to much. Since we're trying to create a new process, this is very
helpful.

A possible enhancement is -money. The default value would false since the
parent processes are often plagued by the undocumented options of
-childcare, -clothing, -food, -sports, -cars, and -private_school. Parent
processes would like to be able to change the value to true about 25 years
after the process is born. Pleas to ATT to add this option have been
rebuffed.

RE: Locally managed tablespaces/What a DBA can do ?

2002-04-17 Thread Fisher, Julie

Rafiq,

I upgraded an HP-UX 11.0 64-bit machine in early April. (8.1.6.3.0 to
8.1.7.3.0) It was the worst upgrade I've ever gone through, but everthing
appears to be running normally. (I'm not using locally managed tablespaces
yet though.) I was missing a couple of operating system patches and the
machine isn't the quickest in the world (and I have 3 databases on that
machine). I plan on upgrading another HP-UX 11.0 64-bit machine to
8.1.7.3.0 by the end of the month. I'm a little nervous about 8.1.7.3.0 on
Solaris 7, so I'm going to do some reading before taking the databases to
either 8.1.7.2.0 or 8.1.7.3.0.

Lisa,
Thanks. I saw couple of messages today about problems with 8.1.7.3 on
Solaris. We are also thinking to move to 8.1.7.3 on HP-UX 11 in near future
but now we have to wait and see for a while.

And if you go to their web site www.mysql.com, they crash me compare
against Oracle 8.1.6 and damn, they appear to look good. They gots lots
more green stars than Oracle, by george. Of course most of those
categories are SQL functions/capabilities. They don't even touch on memory
allocation, types of backups/archiving, so on and so forth. And of course
the lack of column constraints, table constraints, foreign keys...tsk just
noise. Wait!! Dammit Oracle!! Give me the tinyint type! MySQL has it!

This also happens in patch 8.1.6.1.0 for Solaris 7 64-bit. Really annoyed

btw...
When you apply this patch, the installer will likely tell you that the patch
needs an addtional 500 megs on your /oracle partition (on top of the space
already consumed by 8.1.7.0).

This is an Oracle faux pas.
8.1.7.2 takes about 20 megs more than 8.1.7.0 already consumed.

RE: UNIX

2001-07-10 Thread Fisher, Julie

Shoot, had to look up pedantic...

Ok, I agree that df looks at /etc/mnttab to see mounted file systems, but in
order for an SA to mount a slice of a disk, that slice information must be
present in /etc/vfstab. At least that's the way I learned. It's possible
to have a mounted file system without having an entry in /etc/vfstab?? How
do you do that? I guess I've never heard of this or tried to mount a slice
without putting an entry in /etc/vfstab first. Can you manually manipulate
/etc/mnttab?

Thanks,

Julie

Not to be pedantic, but df -k shows all mounted partitions, regardless of
whether they are in /etc/vfstab or not. It requires read permisions on
/etc/mnttab (whihc should be readable by everyone, but I suppose some sick
SA could change it so that only root could read it. The system would
function normally, but non-root users wouldn't be able to use df
functionally.

Are you suggesting I lose my speedo for Linda?

Hmm.

Ross,
It looks like you may have to lose that speedo. I saw this in yesterday's
newspaper.

The Warnaco Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday,
blaming the economy and its heavy debt load, among other things, for its
problems.
Under the leadership of Linda J. Wachner, the chief executive, Warnaco was
transformed from a $590 million underwear maker to a diverse $2.25 billion
apparel company with a dedicated following in stores and on the stock
market.
Brands like Speedo, Calvin Klein and Chaps by Ralph Lauren were part of the
fold.

RE: How to encrypt Password in Export script file ?

2001-05-31 Thread Fisher, Julie

I also did this on all my databases - works very slick.

instead of that, I create an account in the database that is identified
externally (can only run from that server, and does not have a login
password). You will need a matching Unix account for it, if the unix account

is exportacct then create the database account as ops$exportacct

grant this account create session and exp_full_database

then change your shell script to read userid=/ and run the script from
the exportacct account

this way you don't need to hardcode a password ANYWHERE

Subject: How to encrypt Password in Export script file ?
Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 00:50:22 -0800

Hi Unix Gurus,

My daily export file (daily_exp.sh) contains :
exp userid='system/password' file=file_name.dmp grants=y rows=y
constraints=y compress=y full=y inctype=complete log=file_name.log

The system password is stated clearly in the export script file. Has anyone
encrypt/decrypt the system password before passing it as a variable to the
export script ? If yes, could I have a copy of your script ? Thanks.

RE: Oracle 8.1.7 and Apache

2001-05-31 Thread Fisher, Julie

Ken,

(FYI, I used a version of Apache (1.3.12) that came from Apache's web site,
not the version that came with Oracle. And my web servers and database
servers are on different machines. And my web servers are running Kerberos
and SSL. And I still can't believe it all works together.)

Check Apache first. Configure the documentroot directive in the httpd.conf
file. In the directory specified in documentroot, put a simple name.html
file. Point your browser to that name.html file. If your browser can
execute the little .html file, then Apache is working. So now you have
Apache running and a http process running on your machine, to connect into
your Oracle database, you need some sort of intermediate software. I use
Oracle 6i Forms and Reports.

On the web servers (Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 7), I created two users, one
named httpd, which owns the Apache listener process. And one named Apache,
which owns the Apache software. I also have an Oracle user on the machines
that own and run the Forms and Reports software/processes. Root is the user
that starts the Apache listener process under httpd's userid. And all this
is just to get started...

This isn't a simple process - at least it wasn't for me, but you're probably
a whole lot smarter than I am. I had to do a lot of reading and talking to
web people here - I will help you as best I can. If you want any copies of
files I have, I will email them to you offline.

Hi Folks,
I have just installed 8.1.7 on my HP-UX 11.00 box and have Apache running.
Now what? How can I test to make sure apache is talking to oracle and
vice-versa? The install documents don't really explain that part and I've
tried searching metalink but don't know what I'm looking for. Help
