ORA-379 Error

2001-08-13 Thread Ruiz, Mary A (CAP, CDI)

Hello, list,

Please forgive me if this question has come up before. We upgraded a production
database from Oracle 7.3.4
to 8.1.6.3 on Sun Solaris 2.6 about 1 month ago. Recently we are receiving the
ORA-379 error - no free buffers
available in buffer pool DEFAULT, on jobs submitted with dbms_job.db_block_buffers
= 4000, processes = 350
db_block_size = 8192,  db_file_multiblock_read_count = 64
The database is approximately 40 gigs, mainly OLTP, approximately 100 users. Can
anyone shed any light on this
error / possible solutions ?

Thanks in advance,
Mary Ruiz / Atlanta

RE: Data Reporting tools

2001-05-10 Thread Ruiz, Mary A (CAP, CDI)

Hi Dick:
I have a similar project on my plate. I like Business Objects. Actually, we do not
want users to have to know table/column names and need a product where we can build a
data
repository. I am not sure if we need a complete end-to-end solution as many BI
companies seem ready to provide. Other vendors on our short list are - Oracle
(Discoverer), Cognos,
Brio, Informatica (not sure if we need it) and Sagent (has a nice ETL product).

To ALL,

I've been given a project to find a way to make data easily available to end
users, preferably via a thin client (read that as browser based). We're looking
at Discoverer 3000 and 9iAS, but the boss wants to know what other options are
out there. The general idea would be to have a client/server based tool that we
could deploy to the power users (of which we have only a few). These
individuals are NOT programmers nor in the IS group, but they know the data. We
want them to create the queries/reports (with graphics included which the
Discoverer viewer does not do) and then publish them via the database. This is
a lot of what Discoverer does, but are there other tools out there that do the
same? Any recommendations???

RE: Migration from 7.3.4 to 8.1.6

2001-03-22 Thread Ruiz, Mary A (CAP, CDI)

Dan:
What kinds of problems ? I am beginning a migration of a hybrid OLTP / OLAP
database from 7.3.4 to 8.1.5 on Solaris 2.6 We are planning to take 6 weeks to "clean
up" the
database and fix the chained /migrated rows before we migrate (mainly on the big
tables). We will spend a month testing on a migrated copy before migrating
production. Our apps
are custom Powerbuilder apps. I decided to go to 8.1.5 because our other databases
are 8.1.5, and just live with the fact I cannot import a table from a multiple-table
export.
(that bugs me to no end) I am most interested in responses to this post. Maybe some
truly compelling reasons to go to 8.1.6 , although I heard about hanging listener
problems
with that version which scared me.

thanks in advance,
Mary Ruiz / Atlanta

We just migrated the first of our environments from 7.3.4 to 8.1.6 (
Solaris 2.6 ).

We have run into a couple of problems that only seem to appear when
processing
large tables or large amounts of data.

This is kind of what we expected because we did not have the resources to
do full-blown, production size testing.

Anybody have any information on things that go wrong with this type of
migration?

Read Only View Constraint Question

2001-03-09 Thread Ruiz, Mary A (CAP, CDI)

Hi List,

I have been creating linked views using the "with read only" clause. I recently
became aware that for each read only view, an Oracle-named constraint (starting with
SYS_C00)
exists with constraint type 'O' and the constraint is disabled in every case. Is this
normal ? The database is Oracle 7.3.4 on Sun Solaris 2.6 I tried to find something
in the
docs but it was not obvious.

Thanks in advance,

Mary Ruiz / Atlanta GA
p.s I am with GE Capital but not GEFA. I think I have been receiving all of the posts
from the list, in uncensored form .

Rocky:
What is the variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH ? Does it include $ORACLE_HOME/lib and
/usr/ucblib ?
Also check file / directory permissions. Is $ORACLE_HOME its own mount point?

Thanks, Ross.
I issued the command you suggested (the which cc comand) and it found the
compiler just fine. If I relink the oracle executables it works fine.
Any other thoughts?

If so, which one? where is it located?
Do a "which cc" and if it doesn't find your
compiler, you need to either install it, or
edit the mk file to redirect to an extant compiler.

RE: Converting DOS batch file to UNIX script

2001-02-16 Thread Ruiz, Mary A (CAP, CDI)

Sam: Here you go. One of the main differences is that unix is case sensitive, DOS is
not. Also, when you write shell scripts, be sure that their permissions are set so
they are
"executable" The man command in unix will provide you with information about the
command you have a question about. To find out about the chmod command,
man chmod

DOS unix
-
COPY cp
MKDIR mkdir
CD cd
CD\ cd \
ECHOecho
REM #
DIR ls
DEL rm

Hello All:

We are a Windows shop developing a software product that runs on an Oracle
database. Most of our clients also run Oracle on Windows. Recently, a
couple of our new clients have decided to run our database on a UNIX server
instead of NT server. I do not know what flavour of UNIX our clients have.
I know the slashes go in the other direction in UNIX scripts, but can
anybody tell me the UNIX equivalent of COPY, MKDIR, CD, ECHO, and REM?

Here are a few lines of the batch file we use to install our product. Can
anybody help me to convert DOS batch file commands to generic UNIX script
commands?

---snip---
@ECHO OFF
ECHO To run this installation please type (at the CD-ROM prompt)

IF "==%1" GOTO NODRIVE
CD\
MKDIR %1:\DB543
COPY \SERVER\SCRIPTS\Install.bat %1:\DB543\SERVER\SCRIPTS\Install.bat
NUL:
:NODRIVE
REM this is a remark
call %1:\DB543\SERVER\Scripts\Install.bat parm1 parm2 parm3

sqlplus system/manager@db
---snip---

Thanks for your help.

Hi All,

NT 4/Oracle 8.1.6

I can do a tnsping satt. The entry is in tnsnames.ora. When I try to connect
using sqlplus
I get ora-12514. This is a new installation. Everything is loaded on the
same computer. It connects
fine without service name but for other reasons I want to connect using
service name.
Any ideas?
