Raj, It seems as though all of Oracle's names are registered through tucows - Tucows is simply the registrar, not the owner of the name. This is not at all uncommon, and in fact makes sense, given the large number of domain names under management for Oracle. Verisign and MetaLink
Per the doc on MetaLink, Oracle Wallet Manager and Sun Java JDK are affected by the Verisign certs. Here is some of the info: VeriSign Class 2 and Class 3 PCA root certificates are included in the Oracle Wallet Manager as well as Sun's Java JDK. These certificates will expire on January 7, 2004 and are referred to as the "Expiring" certificates in this note. Both the Oracle Wallet Manager and Sun's Java JDK are shipped or utilized by the affected products listed above. These certificates are used in Oracle's products to authenticate web sites and applications communicating over SSL using VeriSign certificates. They are also used to digitally sign source code and libraries as a means to validate that the libraries and archives have come from a trusted source. VeriSign has issued new certificates with the same public key and new validity periods as a replacement for the expiring certificates. The expiring certificates should be replaced with the new certificates following the instructions described in this note. --- Customers who use VeriSign Class 2 and Class3 PCA root certificates as trusted certificates for SSL authentication of users and servers (database or web server) will be affected by the root CA expiry starting January 8, 2004. --- This patch will be available for the following products and versions: o Oracle Database Server (versions 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1.5, and 9.2.0.4) o Oracle Application Server (versions 9.0.2.3, 9.0.3.1, and 9.0.4.0) I can send a copy of the doc if you like. The system was up just fine, thank-you-very-much, and the database was fine, and even "my" version of the app was just fine-and-dandy. She *swore* she had never logged onto Unix and had never changed *anything* except data, and it was working fine til 9:15 then boom! Well, after awhile, I ran out of ideas and tried to log a TAR, and, as you can tell from the subject line, Metalink was down. It was down all morning, and started coming up slowly around 1pm. When I was finally able to enter the text of the TAR, I was just about to log the TAR and my phone rang with a "Gee, you fixed it, thank you!". Well, *that* was a bit too much of a coincidence for me. Well, the upshot of the whole thing was that, for whatever reason, in their setups, they wanted the actual Oracle splash page to come up instead of the one that ships with OraFin and one of their in-house experts who had since disappeared had hardcoded in the server that hosted Metalink into the app. And the really great thing was when I took out the reference to that machine leaving the default splash screen as was, they didn't even notice. RE: Metalink: Pwd Problems?
When I called them and asked about how they'd propose to keep our system up, they replied with a host of colloquialisms I thought to be most unprofessional. And I've never heard of a support line that charges by the minute. Interesting music on hold however. Sort of a 1970's guitar twang. Thanks for the tip, but I think I'll refrain from calling them in the future. I think it had nothing to do with support contract ... this morning it looks like (from reports so far) there was probably a hiccup at metablink ... Call (800) 223-1711, open a new TAR, enter your CSI, mention [EXPLETIVE DELETED] Metalink and a bunch of [EXPLETIVE DELETED] idiots who seem to be unable to maintain so important resource. Also ask to talk to the [EXPLETIVE DELETED] on duty manager. Depending on your tone of voice, the quality of your expletives, and the size of your company and the money it's paying for the support, this usually gets the things moving. What is the best way to download the Metalink Notes
Hi All, I need to add some Metalink notes to one of my project document. When I copy the text of the metalink note and paste it in a word document the formatting gets messed up. There is hard to find and very expensive software called "OpenOffice", which, in version 1.1, allows you to read a HTML file and export it to PDF. The whole procedure takes about 5 minutes. For those of us who don't have luxury of using MS-Word and MS-Office in general, OpenOffice is a gift from God McNeally. RE: download metalink articles - save target as
The way I do it is to print the articles to a .PDF converter like Win2PDF (http://www.win2pdf.com/download/download.htm) that installs a printer driver to which you can print anything you could have printed to a regular printer. The free version has a popup dialog but given the usefulness, is a small price to pay for the convenience. This way you get it in a format that is platform independent but maintains the formatting and layout. An additional benefit is that you get the complete URL in the footer which you can easily copy+paste into a browser to get the latest update of the article on the web. I use this Web=>PDF technique on most articles I find on the web, especially the ones with nice charts and graphics, as saving them to disk sometimes do not include all those pretty pictures...:-) -f -Original Message- Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 8:50 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L The grueling method is... grab the header, copy paste it into notepad.exe. That kind of mentality burns me to no end. You don't say what browser you're using, but I can guess. Toss out that virus-toting piece of dung, IEeee. Actually, keep it on your system, but make sure you have "Work Offline" checked before closing it for the last time. That way, your MS Outlook (Lookout!) mail won't be able to automatically retrieve junk off of the web when you preview or read messages. This will help keep your spam count low. So, in Mozilla (or other Gecko variant like Firebird or perhaps even Netscape) or Opera 7.2.0, right click on the link to the article you want. In the popup menu that appears, choose "Open link in another tab" or "Open link in another window" or whatever option you have. With the link in it's own space, you should be able to figure out how to save the article locally. One thing to watch for when using this technique is that the MetaLink pages are often coded to open new links in a frame ([EMAIL PROTECTED]&@#% frames!) from your original MetaLink window/tab, unless you right-click every link into a new window/tab. Mozilla and it's variants also offer a middle-click to automagically pop the link into a new window/tab. The "modified date" is unreliable. I have seen notes relating to 7.3 and 8.0 and Apps 10.7 which, from the text, I know have *not* been modified for two or more years and yet the "modified" date appears as being only a month ago -- particulary Desupport Advisories. e.g. see Note 39013.1 -- The Desupport Advisory for 7.1/7.2 which was supposedly last modified 04-Sep-03. RE: Is Metalink Working
While Metalink is up and working, it's sporatically dropping out. A word to the wise. If you're about to spend a chunk of time updating a TAR, do it in a text editor, SAVE it, copy it into your TAR, then update. If you spend 30 minutes updating your TAR, push the update button, and get an "action cancelled" message and lose everything, you're likely to say some VERY bad words that might get you escorted out of the building. RE: how to get metalink user name ??
Scott, 1. Contact the Oracle Sales rep. that sold Oracle product to the company. Usually, he would have the details on whether there is a free support available (generally during the first three months). Also, he could coordinate with Oracle support to get a CSI #. 2. If the sales rep says you don't have a support contract, then, depending on your needs "NEGOTIATE" with Oralce sales rep. on the price of support. The price of support varies from company to company and also on many other factors.
