[OGD] Vanilla planifolia

2008-06-03 Thread James Brasch
Vanilla planifolia

This orchid does not sprout pods, but develops seed pods from
hand-pollinated flowers. Since the flowers last only one day and are best
pollinated at very early hours of the day, the pods develop infrequently. We
have had pods in the past and I will transfer pollen on ours at Royal
Botanical Gardens tomorrow. A friend from Sri Lanka suggests that the top of
the plant must droop down. Ours does and flowers regularly.

[OGD] orchids at school / Orland Park, Illinois (US)

2008-06-03 Thread viateur . boutot
Don White...
owner of Anything Orchids greenhouse... a former... teacher...
help second graders construct terrariums.
...
For the last 10 years, White has constructed terrariums with children...
he was a physical education teacher...

For the plants to grow, White uses recycled orchid mix.
We sterilize and reuse it because we know its going to be porous and the
plants need space for the roots to breathe and drain, said White. It
works out great because it has fertilizer already in it.

Pair the orchid mix with a little bit of top soil [?], select your plants
and inside a two-liter pop bottle, the terrarium is complete.

... White, who retired... two years ago after 34 years of teaching,
introduced the terrariums to the schools in hopes that it would teach the
students about the types of plants that live in a rain forest.
...
second grade teacher Linda Conrath...
We're studying the continents and we're talking about the rain forests. We
talk about the plants, how we can help with global warming and why its
important to protect the rain forests, she said.

Prior to construction of the terrariums, White introduced students to
nearly 40 types of his favorite plant and the heart of his greenhouse--the
orchid.

Some of them smell like coconut, raspberries and chocolate, he explained
as the second graders inspected the plants close-up, sniffing the fragrant
scents.

As a child, White recalled visiting conservatories and would search for the
most fragrant flowers. He began his passion for growing the flowers 26
years ago when his first orchid bloomed.

My favorite is 'sharry baby,'... he explained. The reason I like it so
much is because its so fragrant and smells like chocolate [flavoured with
vanilla]...

[OGD] fathers for orchids

2008-06-03 Thread viateur . boutot
from a press release :

Rocket Farms Survey Says Real Men... Love Orchids
...
Rocket Farms says... that real men admit they... love orchids.
Rocket Farms took a small survey of twenty-five Dads from California to
Wisconsin to Maryland and 18 out of 25 (72%) said they would welcome a
potted orchid as a gift for Father's Day. [what was the question asked ?]
...
said Marc Clark, EVP, Rocket Farms. ... There's a market here and we are
going after it.

... The orchids are planted in moss rather than bark which preserves the
moisture and allows almost care-free management.

Rocket Farms... has been in business for over 25 years and is one of the
largest growers in California with approximately 5.3 million square feet of
greenhouse and growing area.

Re: [OGD] Cym X Gram Hybrid

2008-06-03 Thread BluLlamaOrchids
The first Gramatocymbidium was registered in 1966 by William Osment of south
Florida, USA. It was Grcym. Emil Anderson, which is a hybrid of Cym.
pendulum X Gram. measurianum. Andy Easton was the first to garner an award
for a
Cym x Gram Hybrid (Grcym. William Kirch 'Featherhill', 1978, JC/AOS).

Innisfail breeder Rik Kelder...

As far as he knows, the bloom is a world-first.
Mr Kelder has spent 20 years breeding hybrids in greenhouses behind his
home and says this one is an inexplicable mutation...

The plant has been cross-bred from... grammatophyllum... and a cymbidium
species native to Australia.

I've done that many times, but this has no resemblance to the others at
all, Mr Kelder said.
...
The orchid looks most like a straight cymbidium, which only flowers in
cooler climates but the national herbarium has confirmed its pollen
structure is completely different, he said.

Mr Kelder is going to clone the plant at the end of its flowering and then
mass produce it.

[OGD] NOID Vandas

2008-06-03 Thread ROY LEE
This name chase is not unusual. I had a look on the net and found pictures of
the plants in question in another forum posted by the grower??? and also in an
picture posting site I've never seen before with different spelling of the
names. I also came up with nothing in a search for details. As I said this is
not unusual, I came across a website a while ago with some of the best Vandas
Ascdas I've ever seen pictured with names. The names of these also don't
register anywhere so what they actually are is anybodies guess. It appears that
some Asian growers, nurseries like to give crosses names but never register
them correctly.
BTW, the plants you quote are delightful and I wouldn't mind them myself.

Roy.
