Re: [Origami] How many follow the rules of origami trading card swaps?

2022-08-14 Thread leslie cefali via Origami
I noticed that the origami pin swap morphed into a general swap of origami.
Many still make pins, but other things are also part of the swap now. Maybe the
trading card swap did the same. Or maybe some of the other shaped pieces were
traded at the “pin” swap.

It seems that the orgami folks are accepting of swapping origami of all kinds.
I see that as a good thing.

Arthur Stone discovered them and played with them in the late 1930s along with
his math friends and math colleagues, Richard P. Feynman, Bryant Tuckerman,
John W. Tukey, when they were students at Princeton.

Martin Gardner made them popular with his articles in Scientific American
articles, in the 40s and later with his books.

More recently Les Pook, Ann Swartz, and Scott Sherman have written and shared
information about them.

People have played and created many, many flexagons...of different shapes,
number of flexes, faces, and ways to move through them, for years.

It seems there are endless variations...no pun intended (well, ok, maybe I did
intend it).

It is a variation of the Sonobe unit.
The unit itself can be used in many modular models. From 2 to well over 100
units.
Mitsunobu Sonobe is usually the one given credit for its origin, but Wikipedia
states...”The origin of the Sonobe module is unknown. Two possible creators are
Toshie Takahama and Mitsunobu Sonobe, who published several books together and
both members of Sosaku Origami Group 67.”

It is a great variant of the original modular unit.

I just made my annual memo cube run to Staples. It is on sale for $3.50,
though I have not seen a published sale ad.

Beware..it is not of the same quality as in previous years. The first thing I
noticed is that the paper does not fill the (wasteful) plastic cube. Made me
suspicious. I figured the weight must have changed.

Yes, the paper is thinner, the cut is rough and it feels of a lesser quality.
If you were fans of previous year’s memo pads, just a heads up that they have
changed.

Sadly, I will be returning my purchase.

You can often find neon paper at office supplies stores and sometimes in the
craft or office areas at big box discount stores. Often they are in the same
area as you would find poster board. The packets of neon paper I am thinking
about are neon pink, yellow, orange or lime green on one side and white on the
other.

There is also a fadeless art paper that comes in 12"x18" sheets in packets of a
variety of colors, but white on the opposite side. I have the best luck
finding it at teacher stores. It is the same fadeless paper that comes in
rolls to cover bulletin boards...and it truly is fadeless.

Both these need to be cut into squares, as they come in rectangular sheets and
are a bit thicker than kami, but not as thick as construction paper.

This depends on the publisher and the contract between author and publisher.
I was able to keep copyrights to a book I wrote several years ago after
negotiating with the publisher. Sometimes the copyright doesn't go to author
right away, but after a couple years or after it does out of print...or
sometimes they do get to keep it upon publication.

It all depends on how it is worked out.

Personally I like to use 24 lb. text weight over 20 lb. especially for
modulars. I find the tension is a better with the very slightly thicker 24 lb.
I do not fold 60lb. I find that too thick. It is like a light weight
cardstock, which I do not find good for origami.

They say 60 lb is cover weight.
90 lb is cardstock.

She is stuck at step 8

After doing step 7, ( where you fold the tip just a bit over the top edge),
flip the model to the other side. You will see the tip, ( a small triangle
peeking over the top edge, from previous step). Fold that tiny triangle down.
This creates a lock to keep the shape of the butterfly 3D.

I have found it for sale in a few shops in
London where it had moved from the practical art section (thanks
Foyles) to the Interior design department.

I preordered your book from amazon in the US last April...looks like it will
not be available in the states until March 2015. I look forward to getting it!m
Hope it sells well.

Oddly (or amusingly??) I have to agree with your artist. To me a
modular design is one that is self-integrating. If you glue it
together then this essential element of what modular means (in
origami) is lost. Technically I would then consider it a glued multi-
piece arrangement rather than a modular assembly.

You have only quoted a part of what I believe John was trying to say.
I think John's point is that a folder he was talking to said one
should not use glue when doing origami yet he/she was using a mixture
of methyl cellulose on a model. Methyl cel is paste.

I have, too, have chuckled at this contradiction.

Hi all,
Does anybody have experience / have been at the Morgan Conservatory
in Cleveland? They specialize in workshops related with paper,
papermaking, etc. They will offer a 4-days workshop in June and I am
considering applying.

The instructors are Amanda Degener and Deborah Hower.
Any information whether it's worth going, quality of the
instructors, etc. will be greatly appreciated (it's quite expensive
to me, so better be good if I participate!)

Here is the link to the workshop:

Thanks!

The Morgen has a great reputation; Amanda is a well known paper
maker, and Deborah Howe is a well respected book conservator. Both
very active in their prospective fields.

It should be a wonderful workshop.
