The project is a sword made out of dozens of small cubes.  They are made to 
resemble 8-bit pixel art.
I would guess with a bit of work you could convert the pixel cubes to any shape 
you wanted.

Seeing this sword, made me think of connecting Menger Sponge units.

There are some plastic units that can be assembled.  Many of them look like 
flattened Sonobe units.  Fun things can be made, but I'm not sure about

Hello all,

I'm looking for the best modular units to use for making three-dimensional 
letters - like a giant letter T, etc. made out of many units put together.

Some web searching hasn't yielded anything quite like this, but I have no doubt 
that some intrepid modular folder can point me in the right direction!

Bonus points if the modular units have intentional holes or negative space 
inside them/between them.

All help much appreciated.
