Re: [OSList] Law of Mobility, reimiagined

2020-04-06 Thread Michael M Pannwitz via OSList

Dear Gerardo,

thanks for your way of introducting the Law.

Would love to read more variations on this!

Here is how I used to do it:

"Then there is a law, also called the law of mobility or the law of two
feet: "I honor a group with my absence when I neither learn nor
contribute anything."
If I learn something, I stay; if I contribute something, too. But if
neither is the case then I do the group and especially myself a favor by
taking my two feet and moving somewhere else where it is more productive
- or take a nap.
You know this from people who are in groups: you sit together and then
you notice that someone shuts his eyes a bit. And it becomes clear that
this person is no longer quite present. And it would be a good idea for
this person to go away anyway. As soon as the person starts snoring, you
know he has missed the opportunity to leave.
Ok, make sure that when you neither learn nor contribute something: look
for another place.
This law of two feet has several tempting advantages: One is that I am
always somewhere where it is productive and interesting. The other: It
is a wonderful medicine for know-it-alls, all-rounders, long-term
speakers ... when one after another disappears and he sits there alone.
And then there are two appearances, created by this law: bumblebees and
butterflies "

Since 2012 I have not introduced ost at a gathering. Probably I would
shorten it, leave something unsaid. What I would certainly still do, is
to walk the circle and look into everyones face... I am pretty sure,
that what I do aside from speaking is essential to introducing...

Take care and come to Berlin in October for the WOSonOS and a walk
around the Kreuzberg...

That's how I introduce the law of two feet:

It's a natural law. It's something that happens all the time. It's not a
rule you have to follow, it just happens.
All the time we find ourselves in a situation in which our body is in
one place, our head in another.
When this happens to you in an open space you have two feet and you are
invited, as far as possible, to use them to reconnect your body with
your mind.
You can join another group, you can stay at the coffee break and keep
drinking and eating, you can even go home or back to the office if
that's there your head is.

some of us are confined to. If you neither learn nor contribute, make

The version that Chris has in his blog

is new to me.
If you neither learn nor contribute (2 things), look for a more
productive place, not a place "where you can". The more productive
place
might be on a dancefloor, in the swimming pool, gardening all by
yourself, fishing is also great, reading in a book, walk in the forest

Thanks to the virus I have all the time in the world for these

Thanks Michael. San Francisco and other Bay cities will stay at home

Best to all together in this "Chaos Strikes" wave riding moment.

In some countries you dont have a choice. If you are in a group of five
you get in conflict with the Law. But 4 is ok. But since just the number
"4" is really bad luck, a terrible omen in some cultures, I would leave
that constellation and be in groups of maximum 3. And since 1,5 meters
is the minimum distance to other people this constellation will fit into
my living room. Once. In the garden we could have about 7 such trios.
All abiding by the various rules regarding the distance between folks.
Lots of givens. Lots of control. But dont worry, Selforganisation will
creep up.

PS: For a few days I have now been in a group of 1. And in a few more
days there will be a general curfew. You can leave your home only for a
trip to the grocery or a pharmacy or for work. For Berlin this will mean
that for that half of the population that live in single person
households (1,7 Million) groups of 1 will be the rule. Not quite
voluntarily. But it will be a blow to the spread of corona.

Well done Chris... and for sure online Open Space will be coming into it's own!
I had a small experience of that this morning when Ethelyn (my wife) and I
chatted with Gerardo in Milan for the better part of an hour. Never have done
that before (a benefit of Corona?) and it felt very warm and intimate. Zoom was
the vehicle and I assume that the other platforms would do as well. Give it a
try while we are all waiting for whatever... It is wonderful to have friends
around to chat with!!!
