I know about that option and intentionally did not mention it. It is often adviced against downloading the file directly from the master GitHub branch, That is indeed easier and faster. As it can occasionally cause OsmAnd to crash or behave strangely, if the file version is not backward compatible with the one of the latest release. IIRC, one such a crash occured to me too. Re: Hardware needs for OsmAnd? (RAM, Storage, Cores, Frequency)
2GB working memory or better for longer car navigation. 1GB for cycling and hiking. Screen resolution is also important. OsmAnds rendering is not the fastest but Osmands maps are (by far) the most detailed ones. That takes time to render. 1024x600= 0.6 million pixels (my android car head unit), 1280*720 = 0.9 million pixels, 1920*1080=2.1 million pixels, 2960x1440= 4.3 million pixels. If you have a high-resolution phone/device, you certainly need a fast processor. Most of the time that goes hand in hand, but not always. My car head unit having 1024x600 pixels does have a relatively fast octa-core processor. OsmAnd screen rendering is very nice. My phone has 1920x1080 pixels with only a slightly faster octa-core CPU. It has to handle almost 4x times as much pixels!! I do see artifacts in rendering in car navigation. Most users don't realize this. This is of course for car navigation. With hiking/cycling the screen refresh rate doesn't have to be that high and almost everything works. For calculating routes OsmAnd uses a default heuristic coefficent of 1.0. I always use 1.4 and can easily calculate routes up to 1500 km and relatively fast. Using a higher heuristic coefficient is "theoretically" reducing optimal route calculation, but Osmand is really the only one around using 1.0. Almost all apps using the A*-algorithm use values between 1.3 and 1.6. As said, I use 1.4: my calculations are on longer routes up to 4x faster calculating the 100% exact same route, memory consumption is hundreds of megabytes lower. So fiddling with the heuristic coefficient also gives you a "faster, more memory efficient phone" for the same money. For bike navigation Osmand is using 1.4 by default and for pedestrian navigation it uses 1.2 by default. I didn't change that. Re: Hardware needs for OsmAnd? (RAM, Storage, Cores, Frequency)
Thanks to all for your help. The main reason for buying a new phone is: More and more apps are now longer supported by android 4.3. Current timetable data, that are given as updates are no longer available. OsmAnd was the only app with performance problems. It is not funny, to miss a turn when going by car, because the message to make a turn came after passing the crossroad. Most times I used navigation when biking, and that was slow but ok. Main usage of OsmAnd was simply exploring the places where I travelled to. Over the years I have filled my SD-Card with 20 GB of Maps. Klaus Am Dienstag, 19. I use a Samsung S5, which dates back to the same era (and both come with 2GB of RAM) and Osmand runs fine in it, including navigation. [ Funnily enough gsmarena.com says it supports "Android 4.4.2, up to 6.0", but it runs Android 9 just fine (thank you LineageOS!). ] > It seems that almost any new phone in the US that isn't in a > super-low-price category would be ok. A second-hand phone may work just fine as well, since lots of people upgrade their phone gratuitously every 2-3 years. That would also spare the planet the harm of another of those gadgets. And another upside is that slightly older phones are also more likely to be supported by LineageOS. Stefan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Osmand" group. Hard to say, but a modern device with 3G of ram and a 64-bit arm chip should be fine. Below 2G and I'd be worried about osmand. I have an old nexus5 (which was way cool in 2013), and osmand runs ok on that, but I haven't tried to navigate with it lately. Could you give the specs of your current slow phone, and a specific model you are eyeing with what ram/cpu/flash it has? Not knowing where you are and the local android market, I have little idea of what might be available and the cost tradeoffs. Using roads only maps? Using detailed maps? Using both (not recommended)? Using several regions or one only? Navigating by car long routes, navigating by bike or pedestrian routes more or less locally? If you have to prioritise, go for more RAM. I have Redmi Note 4X with 4 GB RAM and OsmAnd is working fine for me, my father has Redmi 4x with 3 GB RAM and is using OsmAnd without problems as well. He might not have as much future-proofing built in, but I suspect the phone will give up sooner than OsmAnd will outgrow it for his usage. The big step up for me was going from 500 MB RAM up - this became unmaintainable even with all the workarounds I have employed to keep it going. But I did keep OsmAnd alive longer on this then was reasonable for at least a year, maybe longer :) And don't forget to think about space for the maps - they are growing in size constantly, if you cannot/will not use SD card, it can easily be the limiting factor as well (dual SIM phones sometimes use either second SIM or SD card, not both at the same time). Look for the size of the region you want to keep on you at all times, multiply by 2 or 3 to have reasonable reserve. Just saying when I hear you were using jelly beans phone and I suspect you will probably want to keep the new phone again for a long time.
