IMHE -OsmAnd works well (normally) on Motorola x Force. Route calc is
sometimes a bit slow. Battery is good.

To conserve power:-
Turn off all unwanted apps, bluetooth, etc.
Reduce screen brightness if practicable.
Rely mainly on voice directions.
Use "Automatic screen on/off".
Carry a solar battery as backup to use at the end of the day if necessary.

my personal expierence is:
OSMAND needs a good CPU and is demanding on the GPU (new mobile phones have
more Power than a mature Desktop PC 10 years Ago, but get very warm if used

This means a more modern CPU is better. especially modern in terms of a

the same computing tasks.

Whatever you do - More Hardware consumes more power. So you better
look out for something with USB-C and Quickcharge/Turbocharge
so you get more than 5W into your device (5Volt * 1Ampere).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Charge

I am using a Moto X4 (LineageOS) and i dont have any problems like this.
(Using a QuickCharge cigarette lighter adapter)

And you can do the math. Lenovo Tab 2 with a 30 Watt/hour battery is rated
for average 10 hour operation. Thats most likely a very optimistic
runtime, mostly idle, surfing the web. So in Idle
the tablet consumes at least 3 Watt - Using OSMAnd, GPS etc
will go above the 3 Watt. Without any more sophisticated
power solution than standard USB you drain the battery although
beeing connected. USB does 5 Volts at 1 Amp
with standard chargers and devices - thats 5 Watt.

best HW for Osmand?

2019-09-02 Thread Stehlik, Vladimir

Hi,

I have used Osmand on Lenovo Tab2 tablet which was running quad-core
chipset with 1GB RAM and low screen resolution. Now I'm using it on
Vernee M5 phone which is octa-core with 4GB RAM and full HD display.
Both suffer from overheating while running it. In fact both of these
devices were not charging at all even if plugged into the car's socket
while running Osmand, so consuming as much energy as flew in, sometimes
even more :-(

Since Lenovo died, I'm now in the process of choosing a successor, hence
a question towards those who know how the code works or have the
experience: Is it better to look for more cores and more GHz and more
RAM or shall I rather look for more powerfull chipset with less cores of
more performance? Is there a sweet spot in there? Or what is the feature
that changes it? Android version? Graphical chip?

To give example two extremes of similar price:
quad core with 2GB RAM: https://navitel.ru/en/devices/navitel-t757-lte
deca core with 3GB RAM:
https://www.chuwi.com/product/items/Chuwi-Hi9-Pro.html

Of course they both are running different Android as well and have
different screen size and resolution. They both also support Glonass
(and the chipsets are capable of Galileo as well).

I'm looking for a rather low cost (as I expect it to die again in max 2
years) 7" (preferably) or 8"max tablet with primary function as
navigation in the car.

Any ideas?

V.
