Re: Migrating TFS

2014-02-10 Thread Stephen Price
Grant,
I did a migration from a one TFS server to another and it was a horrible
experience. I don't recall the tool I used but I had the added complication
of using a different Template on the destination server and it was trying
to migrate loads of mismatching fields. The source control was ok and
history seemed to work. The work items were sketchy with lots not migrated.
We ended up keeping the old TFS server about in read only for reference.

Good job going to the cloud, I use Visual Studio online for my own stuff
and its brilliant. Shame they don't make it easier to migrate into.

cheers,
Stephen
p.s. if you need help with it let me know ;)

Thanks Anthony. We're not worried about work items, just source code and
history at this point, including branches. The TFS Integration Platform is
beavering away as I write this (trying it out on a test copy of the
project), telling me that 176 of 335 change groups have been migrated.

I guess I'll just let it run and see where it lands me.

RE: Migrating TFS

2014-02-10 Thread Anthony Borton
Hi Grant,

I moved a client with around 35 team projects from an on-premises TFS up to
Visual Studio Online using the TFS Integration Platform. I was pretty lucky in
that they only needed the source to go up and didn't have work items to work
about. The process was quite a bit more time consuming than I had planned and
it was a seemingly never-ending exercise in massaging settings to get the
source (with history) from each TP up to the cloud. A future TFS 2013 update
should include a feature to help move data from VSO down to TFS but I haven't
heard if there is anything there to help go the other way.

Has anyone moved from on-premises TFS to visual studio online? We have a large

I'm thinking about using the tool at http://tfsintegration.codeplex.com/.

RE: Google Chromecast

2014-02-10 Thread GregAtGregLowDotCom
Yep, depends what media and which apps. If all you want to do is stream
video content from your PC, anything I can open in Chrome just plays. (That
includes all the video files from the local filesystem that I've tried to
stream).

For apps that understand Chromecast, it's a better experience. For example,
if I open YouTube, it has a Chromecast button that appears, lets you pick
which Chromecast device, then plays it pretty much full screen with nice
looking headers, etc.

Same deal from iOS apps. There are a few that already understand Chromecast.
Any of those just stream easily.

>From what I've seen, this is pretty painless. I really can see this catching
on. I thought AppleTV was pretty slick but I've had some issues with
AirPlay. This is even more slick and seems more reliable on my short
testing.

It's interesting to see that there's already an ecosystem building around
it. For example, you can design themes for it. On the Google site, there are
a bunch of themes that Google has produced, and a bunch that designers and
artists have created. Here's an example:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/theme/48-by-artists?utm_campaign
=en

&utm_source=en-et-na-us-oc-themes&utm_medium=et

99% of the time, I'm just wanting to watch technical mp4's that I've
downloaded, on one of the TVs in the house. For that, this is perfect.

Hi Folks,

Just to follow up about the Win8.1/DLNA/Miracast, etc. discussion the other
week. I spent so many hours trying to make that stuff work.

The Google Chromecast devices arrived today. Slotted straight into the back
of the TVs, with a short USB cable to get power from a USB port on the back
of the TV too. 10 minutes later they were both installed, working and so
neat and tidy.

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation. And well done Google!

You need a supported media server ... one of which is the Plex fork of
XBMC.

They just released the SDK a week or so ago so no doubt a million more will
follow.

I'm interested to see what people do for online gaming. Server based
Monopoly or Draw Something! with people playing from phones using
ChromeCast to render the display would be a pantload of fun.

SharpDx + Trim() Help

2014-02-10 Thread Stephen Price
Hey all,

I'm updating one of my Windows 8 apps for 8.1 and its failing the
certification.

Direct3D Trim after Suspend

   - Error Found: The Direct3D Trim after Suspend test detected the
   following errors:
  - Application App was not running at the end of the test. It likely
crashed or was terminated for having become unresponsive.
   - Impact if not fixed: If the app does not call Trim on its Direct3D
device, the app will not release memory allocated for its earlier 3D work.
This increases the risk of apps being terminated due to system memory
   pressure.
   - How to fix: The app should call the Trim API on its IDXGIDevice3
interface anytime it is about to be suspended.

I'm using SharpDX so the example they give me in C++ isn't much help. Also
I can only find one example on the web of this Trim with SharpDX but its
not much help, the Device3 it references doesn't exist on my SharpDX
objects.

http://www.packtpub.com/article/integrating-direct3d-xaml-windows81

So I'm a little stumped how I can call Trim. Perhaps I'll have to write my
own little assembly in C++ that just does that. Not a path I've been down
before though...

Any suggestions?

thanks
Stephen
