Hi Neil Are you doing anything related to medical / behavioural conditions - in particular, Parkinsons? Thanks for the link - my old friends at City Software. A friend (who has PD) has the Asus Xtion device and is doing some very basic coding using the OpenNI framework etc. There is some C# code to interface to it, and he is au fait with C but my thoughts are to get a Kinect device, believing that the development might accelerate now that there is a demarcation from Xbox | Kinect. Hi Ian, We are doing a range of things, many of which we cannot discuss right now as our clients have us sign NDAs. Outside of Australia I have seen a number of projects involving medical and behavioral monitoring using Kinect. As I recall, my friend bought the Asus Xtion device because it had a closer focal point (which is what I assume is the near mode that you mentioned, Joseph). For his purpose, its ability to detect motion more accurately when closer to the person (0.8m to 3.5m stated for the Xtion Pro Live) was an essential feature. From the blog post, I see that 40cm - 50cm is possible in 'near mode' with the Kinect for Windows. Has anyone found a comparison between the Asus Xtion and the Kinect device for Windows (as opposed to the Xbox one)? And can the Kinect SDK be used for Asus Xtion? Since first posting, I have read all the Microsoft blogs on Kinect for Windows which cleared up some misconceptions. I haven't followed what is happening in open source OpenNI circles, but it seems to me that the Kinect for Windows SDK v1.5 / 1.51 is well advanced over what is available for the various Asus Xtion models; and the Kinect for Windows device is superior to Kinect for Xbox(because of its firmware - maybe not its sensors, which I believe are the same as the Xbox add-on device has). For information: the CodeProject article indicated by Nathan Keir has a comment that is important - The Windows Kinect has a different product id so I guess it doesn't work with OpenNI (drivers) as soon as I plugged in an Xbox Kinect the drivers worked. How hard to hack the ID's? It's a driver, so I imagine it'd require re-signing.
