Re: Hospital trials birth monitor:Courier Mail news report (QLD)

2002-06-27 Thread Laurelle Williams

Royal Women's in Brisbane has been conducting the pre-trial for a few years
now. As I understand it, as a result of findings so far, it has been
decided to do a much larger study.

 Hospital trials birth monitor
By Siobhain Ryan
27jun02

BABIES will soon have to make room in the womb for oxygen monitors as part
of a world-first trial of the devices in Queensland.

The probes, which measure oxygen levels in a fetus's bloodstream, will be
tested during labour to help reduce the number of emergency caesarean
births.

Chief research investigator Professor Paul Colditz said about 600 women
were being recruited in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to take part in the
study. He said that, at present, oxygen monitoring only occurred after
birth, in intensive care.

Before or during delivery, the main way of checking for fetal distress was
by monitoring the heart rate.

But Professor Colditz, director of the perinatal research centre at Royal
Women's Hospital, said heart rates were often poor measures of oxygen
available to the baby ? that could lead to unnecessary caesareans.

He said the study, which follows small-scale tests of similar devices at
the hospital, was the world's first controlled trial of the probe.

The technology is being marketed around the world but because people are
waiting to see if it's really effective or not, it's waiting on our trial,
Professor Colditz said.

With stillborn births now outnumbering deaths from sudden infant death
syndrome, his centre ? with the SIDS and Kids Association ? hopes to boost
its research efforts into peri-natal health.

The SIDS fundraiser ? Red Nose Day ? is tomorrow.

Anyone want to hazzard a guess why this is? I
thought that all the new technology and monitoring was supposed to DECREASE
  the number on stillbirths. MM

A Current Affair/ controlled crying

2002-06-27 Thread Pinky McKay

Hi everyone
I am on A Current affair tomorrow
night(friday) in an interview about controlled crying. I didnt realise they were
also going to interview the "experts" who have just made the link between cc and
preventing postnatal depression until the interview, so who knows how it
will be "cut".

I didnt see the promos but a neighbour said "all
these babies were bawling and the mum s were saying we hate doing this" must be
in a sleep clinic - apparently I am the woman with the controversial new
book.
100 Ways to calm the Crying will be released next
week -anyone in Melbourne -please come to the launch at Borders books 11am
Friday 5th July -morning tea --onwards. It will be a babyfriendly/ childfriendly
event.

slogan

2002-06-27 Thread Alphia Garrety

I realize that the way this is worded would not be catchy enough for a
slogan- by the way all of the ideas are fantastic. But I was reading some
work by Karl Marx yesterday and there was this quote

Man knows no more degrading or unbearable misery than forced labour

Actually it is by Friedrich Engels- Marx's partner in crime. But it just
hit me that Women know no more degrading or unbearable misery than forced
labour. I dont know if it could work at all- but I just thought I would
share it with all of you.
