hello there, yes I have heard of this along with what may be another great
urban myth that some constituent of the placenta is used in lipstick...or
was!
I cant decide whether I should be glad of the attempts to recycle or
whether , in the case of lipstick , it constitutes some form of cannibalism
if one should swallow itforgive me I am rambling , but I am trying to

[ozmidwifery] NMAP on Natioanl TV

2002-10-23 Thread Denise Hynd

Dear list and NMAP
supporters

As George did a
reasonable job about the PI situation ( I had trouble with the reference back to
a doctor and the medical PI situation) and his personal expereince of the value
of midwfery care I feel he may do more justice to our need for NMAP
publicity.
So I ask you all to write to
him and new sdimensions.
My letter to him is below if you want to adapt it
feel free

Denise
Hynd23rd October, 2002
New Dimensions
ABC TV
Dear George Negus,
At the close of tonights New Dimensions you asked for innovative topics for
further programs, my recommendation is to look at the history, structure,
function and outcomes of the Community Midwifery Program WA (CMP-WA) in
Perth.
The reasons why this is innovative subjects are;

This program was originally funded in 1996 under the Commonwealths
Alternative Birthing Services (ABS), due to a collaborative application by the
Fremantle based Birthplace Support group and UK experienced midwives. Unlike
most other ABS funded projects this one has continued due to its community
support and 2 independent assessments which have secured equal funding from
the WA government. CMWA and the
CMWA is the template of the National Maternity Action Plan (NMAP). NMAP
has been prepared through collaboration by Maternity Coalition, Australian
Society of Independent Midwives and Community Midwifery WA Inc. Maternity
Coalition is an umbrella organisation of individuals and groups who share a
commitment to improving the care of women in pregnancy, birth and the
postnatal period. The NMAP campaign of Maternity Coalition calls on both
Federal and State governments to introduce primary midwifery care within the
public health system throughout urban and regional Australia as an answer to
many of the problems within Australian maternity services (see attached NSW
  document).
NMAP has been adopted part of the health policies of the Democrat and
Greens parties in each state and nationally.
CMWA offers each woman the choice of having her own midwife care for her
throughout her pregnancy, birth and the first few weeks of her life with her
new baby. This choice is available to women in the UK, Canada, the Netherlands
  and New Zealand.
Evidence shows that adoption of CMWA/NMAP across Australia would
make internationally recognized best practice available for all pregnant
women, help solve the professional indemnity crisis in maternity services,
reduce costs to the taxpayers and improve outcomes for mothers and
babies.
For these reasons and more, such as the positive experiences of the women,
babies, families, community and midwives (even when there is a sad outcome!) who
have access to the Community Midwifery Program WA, I would ask that your program
share this information with the rest of Australia!
You can contact the programs office in Perth on (08) 9339 0021.
Yours sincerely,
Denise Hynd RN, RM, BApSc(Nsg), IBCLC.
PS I admit my personal interest in this story;, it is I have experienced the
joy of working on CMWA and am now againexperiencing the too often sadness of
hospital birth and pregnancy, whilst working for
NMAP!

Hi Jo

Yes I have heard of placental face creams manufactured in Europe.
I actually found a plastic container of placental shampoo washed up on a
beach off the coast of NSW once upon a time so I assumed that the some of
the boaties in the area had been using it.

With the AIDs scares over the last few decades I don't know whether these
placental products have continued to be produced but it makes sense to use
the placenta to restore vitality to human skin when you consider it contains
every hormone and enzyme known to be beneficial to humankind.

You'd think at least we would find a use for the placenta as fertilizer -
(animal placentas go into the manufacturing of blood and bone type
products I believe.)

I can show you some beautiful bougainvillias and other spectacular tress
growing around Sydney where I know some home birth placentas were used
wisely and not wasted.

[ozmidwifery] Oh what a night...

2002-10-23 Thread Tom, Tania and Sam Smallwood
I just wanted to share with the list that I attended the most amazing and
special birth last night. For those of you who don't know me (and that's
probably most, as I'm a bit of a lurker here!) I'm a newly qualified midwife
(May last year), with 2 littlies of my own, and I've been practicing in
partnership with another midwife here in Adelaide since April this year,
attending women planning homebirths mainly in the Adelaide Hills area.

Enough about me, yesterday morning I got a call from Wendy (the midwife) and
arrived at Jess's house at 6.30am, and after an extremely emotional, hard
work, up and down, lots of walking, lots of sleeping, lots of swinging and
swaying (we nearly resorted to KC and the sunshine band Vicki!), lots of
yelling, lots of beconing this baby into the world kind of labour (where I
think I carried the entire weight of my car in water), Jess had a lovely
baby girl at 1120 last night, and 3 hours later, when the placenta decided
it was good and ready, so were we (and Jess, believe me!). She shared this
wonderful time with us, her partner and both sets of parents, who waited
quietly down the other end of the house for what must have seemed an
eternity before we gave them the signal that the baby was finally on its
way.

I've attended 4 births with Wendy, and each one teaches me something new,
something I didn't even know I didn't know - if that makes any sense. (And
there's plenty I don't know!!) It was such a hard and long journey for Jess
yesterday, and it was just such an amazing experience to be with another
midwife who supported me, and the woman, and such a privilege to be there
for such a powerful birth (which they all are, in different ways).

Enough rambling, I've had a good 3 hours sleep, now to try and convince my 1
year old that it's time to go back to bed!

Thanks for listening,

Tania

Re: [ozmidwifery] Canberra Birth Centre?

2002-10-23 Thread Leanne Meddemmen

Ho Monica
Sorry this has taken so long in the replying. I have been privileged to be
with some amazing women and families during their birthing.
The primary midwifery teams (2 teams)have 4 midwives each . They have
their "own" women and back each other up for annual leave, weekends off (one per
month), sleeping etc. They provide the women pregnancy, labour and postnatal
care (7-14 days) and also education sessions. They are on call 24/24 and work
roughly 12/24 at one time without a break (OHS) if some one is in labour.
Though they may have worked during the day doing pregnancy care or postnatal
visits. The fulltime Midwives have 4 women a month. This is decreased at annual
leave times, 7 wks PA (worked out well in advance to help with booking families
on the program), part time midwives have less families depending on what hours
they work (some 3 days a week some 64 hrs f/n). Both teams have 2 fulltime 2
part-time midwives.
Pregnancy care visits - initial @ 14-16/40, 20 with Obstetric Registrar,
26/40 with GLT if having, 30/40, 33/40 primips or 34/40 multips, 36/40 primip,
38/40 primip and multip and 40/40 primip and multip and 41/40 again for
induction DISCUSSION and choices - IOL @ 41+3 or ultrasound for AFI
biophysical "profile" and await labour. Informed decision nothing
mandatory.
We don't have exclusion criteria except major medical issues, though some
women will birth in Delivery Suite "routinely" - Initial VBAC, twins, Induction
with synto, vaginal breech birth (not common but do happen) PE with medication.
Salary "package", reimbursement of work use of own vehicle, mobile phone
provided, arranges own daily workload and keeping hours down if over because of
long labour/birth. Women aware that visits may need to be rearranged at short
notice.
Woman can choose their midwife if they have birthed before with them or we
will ask them if they have birthed in the Birth Centre before, who cared for
them and if they want to be with that Midwife again (if on PM teams) though some
of the team midwives occasionally PM women they have been with, though harder to
arrange as they have a 6 wk rotating roster.
Union involved in salary negotiation and what is now our award. Those who
were on the Committee worked extremely hard and had alot of moments of
frustration but kept at it. Think about what women want and work out what your
Midwives can/will offer the women and work from there. We did a couple of
Midwife surveys as well and also asked who wanted to do the Primary Model care.
Please don't call it caseloading (poor connotations and language choice) One
woman rang the Birth Centre wanting to speak to her Midwife as she was one of
her CASES.
Hope this helps. If you need further info email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED])again
or if you want ring the Birth Centre (02) 62443145.

Hi Leanne,
I would be very interested in learning more about your primary
midwifery model. I work in a tertiary referral hospital in Sydney and as
a consequence of the GMT2 thing going on herewe have been asked by
the Area Stream Director (a gynaecologist who has no connection in
any way with obstetric practice) to develop proposals for midwifery led
care. I feel quite out of my depth and though I'm on the committee I
don't feel as if I can contribute much. It would be great to see how
others have instituted such models. We have a long-standing Team
Midwifery program but its long hours of rostering don't make it a
viable proposition for most of our midwives. Not all of us are able to
make ourselves available for 12 hour on call shifts etc. There must be
other models running though, I'd love to hear how yours works,
especially as a couple I looked after a few weeks ago described with a
wealth of gratitude and nostalgia the wonderful birth experience they
had had in Canberra with their last baby- obviously you are doing
something right!
Many thanks,

I just wanted to share with the list that I attended the most amazing and
special birth last night. For those of you who don't know me (and that's
probably most, as I'm a bit of a lurker here!) I'm a newly qualified
midwife
(May last year), with 2 littlies of my own, and I've been practicing in
partnership with another midwife here in Adelaide since April this year,
attending women planning homebirths mainly in the Adelaide Hills area.

Enough about me, yesterday morning I got a call from Wendy (the midwife)
and
arrived at Jess's house at 6.30am, and after an extremely emotional, hard
work, up and down, lots of walking, lots of sleeping, lots of swinging and
swaying (we nearly resorted to KC and the sunshine band Vicki!), lots of
yelling, lots of beconing this baby into the world kind of labour (where I
think I carried the entire weight of my car in water), Jess had a lovely
baby girl at 1120 last night, and 3 hours later, when the placenta decided
it was good and ready, so were we (and Jess, believe me!). She shared
this
wonderful time with us, her partner and both sets of parents, who waited
quietly down the other end of the house for what must have seemed an
eternity before we gave them the signal that the baby was finally on its
 way.

I've attended 4 births with Wendy, and each one teaches me something new,
something I didn't even know I didn't know - if that makes any sense. (And
there's plenty I don't know!!) It was such a hard and long journey for
Jess
yesterday, and it was just such an amazing experience to be with another
midwife who supported me, and the woman, and such a privilege to be there
for such a powerful birth (which they all are, in different ways).

Enough rambling, I've had a good 3 hours sleep, now to try and convince my
1
year old that it's time to go back to bed!

 Thanks for listening,

 Tania

Hi Jo, thanks for your affirming words. I appreciate your feedback.

It is vitally important to work with medical students and to challenge
their
accepted, medically conditioned ways of thinking. It is great you are
doing
that. You just never know what effect you will have on the future by your
great work and kindness in teaching them and showing them what woman
friendly means. Investment in these beginning medicos is critical.
Remember, the more emotional you can make it, the more their brains
remember
and bring it up in the future. A pity they are imprinted with how not
to
be - you could use that though to really get them to articulate the
desired
way and make that a stronger imprint - this is where the Socratic style of
questioning is so useful, for example How do you think that woman feels
after. and what would be a better way of doing and what do you
think the best course of action in that situation would be? and Do you
think Dr Blah Blah was being woman friendly when he and Who was in
control in that situation? Do you think the woman felt empowered by the
way
those choices were explained to her? etc. It seems that asking is always
 better than telling :-).

Yes, they do get the edges bumped off them by the old guard, that is a
survival tactic to fit in to the culture... but little by little

Those who know these things say culture change takes about 30 years...

 Towards a woman friendly culture,

 warmly, Carolyn Hastie

 I love your post, Carolyn.

You say a lot of what I feel but I don't know how to express it. The term
'stranded beetle' said it all for me...
It makes me sad, but I am taking this thread as a challenge to be able to
advocate better for women in situations such as these.

I can only wish the 'new breed' of obstetric residents/registrars and
obstetricians are more women-friendly. I have been working with some
medical students recently, doing their obstetric placements. Many of them
are saying that it is a great experience to see how NOT to be when/if they
specialise in obstetrics. It is an advantage for the medical students to
work on a day-to-day basis with midwives, but their growing minds still
get
poisoned with lectures and tutorials by those 'expert' obstetricians!

 Sincerely, Jo

Babies are Born... Pizzas are Delivered.

Interesting also the stranded beetle position in
dogs indicates total surrender and lack of power - same for us human
females - surrender and acquiescence and one is far less likely to
 complain
or dissent in such a position.
  Roll on NMAP!

  In solidarity,

  Carolyn Hastie

[ozmidwifery] Parliament discussion on Indemnity coverage

2002-10-23 Thread Alphia Possamai
I thought you all might be interested in the fact that Parliament was
discussing indemnity coverage for private practicing midwives and midwifery
students today. On my way home from work I was listening to ABC radio and
lo and behold there it was. A Senator Ridgeway (please excuse my spelling)
gave an accurate picture of the dire circumstances that Australian society
is facing in relation to the indemnity crisis. He quoted the WHO and NMAP
and was an obvious supporter of midwives. The next speaker was a Senator
Knowles (spelling again I am not sure of)- I am not sure of who she is- but
I do know that she is from WA. Unfortunately her discussion stemmed around
that she believed it was not the responsibility of the central or national
goverment but rather the states themselves to supply assistance to
midwives. She also went on to say that the reason this small amount of
midwives was not being covered was because the insurance companies viewed
them as too risky. Needless to say the driver in front of me believed I
was conducting some form of private roadrage. I arrived home before much
else was divulged. For those of you who are interested I am sure the
transcripts will be available tomorrow onthe following
website: www.aph.gov.au I believe if you go to Hansard Transcripts there
will be something ready. What frustrated me was the purely economic
rationality that Senator Knowles was proposing. She neglected to point out
how the neglect to provide indemnity coverage for the above mentioned
midwives was going to affect the population of Australian society. the
restrictions that it actually causes.Anyway I thought I would pass it on.

Take care everyone

Alphia
