Hi Jo,
I feel sad that the only 'solutions' offered are letting babies cry -I
also have an enormous problem with avoiding eye contact I have seen
several babies lately whose mums have been concerned (worried and
upset re bonding) because bubs are avoiding making eye contact with
mum -babies make great eye contact with dad ( who isnt doing settling/
sleep training)and have found babies making direct eye contact and
smiling at me as I talk to their parents - I would never suggest to a
mum that she had done anything 'wrong' , but each time have discovered
mum has been using a method of avoiding eye contact with bub to give
clear sleep messages - as advocated by lots of sleep trainers. Im
finding a lot of mums using The Contented Little baby book by Gina
Ford (Childless english nanny)

I find this really upsetting -isnt it precious to have a tiny bub look
at you and smile in the dead of night? How would we feel if our
partners deliberately avoided eye contact as we tried to engage?

Hang in there JO - there are gentle gradual ways to remove a dummy if
you want -Think in terms of gradually with love If you are ok about
it dont worry - lots of babies give up dummies by themselves later in
the first year - very few seem to naturally self settle before 4
months anyway.

A dummy is apparently best out by a year because of teeth formation/
distortion but that leaves plenty of time to make changes - there is
no need to make a baby cry it out.

Pinky

Thanks, Pinky :)
I know it is impossible to avoid eye contact... these dark little eyes
in the middle of the night staring at me with utmost adoration, knowing
that I am about to pick him up and feed him. Even for daytime sleeps...
I tried that, but his eyes just willed me to look at him. So I do. I
look at him and say nini and he watches me leave the room. Mostly,
this works just fine! I just have to go in to him every few min when the
dummy falls out when he's on the brink of sleep, to replace it. Again,
I can't help but make eye contact.

I heard there is a window about 5 - 6 months when you can remove the
dummy, so I might wait another month and try then. I am not prepared
for the 'few days of crying' I was told to expect.

Thanks again, :)

With my first, everytime I tried to remove the dummy, she started sucking
her thumb. My dentist said dummies were preferable to thumbs, so she kept
her dummy - nights only - until she was 3.5 and I had something she was
willing to relinquish it for. She gave it up cold turkey and never asked for
it again.

2005-10-01 Thread Kelly @ BellyBelly

A tip I heard from a few mums / nannies was that if you make a snip at
the end of the dummy, they quickly get bored of it - it no longer
provides that soothing suck so they become disinterested. My son had a
dummy which helped his reflux when he was little, but gave it up on his
own when his teeth came through - he kept biting holes in them and
ruined them.

Just wanting to let people know that CARES SA have just finished a 70+
page document covering all the issues about Birth After CS. It is
AMAZINGLY GOOD (if I do say so myself! I am SO proud of Carolyn for
putting it together). It covers common myths then follows up with
current abstracts; highlights policies and management; outcomes and so
on.

ALL evidenced based.
ALL current.

CARES SA INC. is a non profit organization who provide understanding
and compassion for women recovering from caesarean birth, planning
caesarean birth or aiming for a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC).

Awareness of the individual’s rights to make informed choice is a main
focus of the group. We encourage women and their families to become
actively involved in the decision making that will effect the birth of
their child. Aiming to increase community awareness and understanding of
the issues surrounding surgical birth is also a main focus.

Recovery is a crucial element for maintaining good health. It is very
important that a woman is fully informed of the physical recovery, but
more importantly we focus on the vital need for emotional healing.
Through a safe, caring and understanding environment, women and their
partners are encouraged to follow their path to emotional healing.

Education is important when making decisions and it is our goal to be
up-to-date on current trends and philosophies. By providing relevant
information to women and the community, we hope that a greater
understanding of the effects of caesarean birth will reduce the amount
of traumatic experiences.

Support for birth choices is vital, especially for those seeking vaginal
birth after caesarean.
By providing women with the options available to them and then
respecting that choice, we hope to empower women and their families to
achieve the desired positive birth for both mother and child.

We will be willing to supply email versions for people at a small cost
-perhaps a CARES membership of $20 pa- further details will be
available for those interested.
