Re: [ozmidwifery] Obs first visits
In Mareeba the women are booked under the Midwife's name. I guess it takes a long time to change. We are not rocking the boat right now as what we are doing is very different to what most of the rest of Qld does and we are just too happy to still be alive. Working with the OB's in Cairns is one of the conditions of our survival. Cheers Judy --- wump fish [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It is very depressing to hear that even when women have midwifery-led care they either have to see a dr or have their notes reviewed by a dr. As midwives we are the experts in normal and competent at identifying when things are high risk or becoming abnormal. Why the hell do the drs waste their time 'checking' notes incase we have missed something? Is it because the women are booked under their name, therefore they think they are responsible for a stuff-up? In the UK low risk women were booked under their mw's name unless there were problems. We would get into serious trouble if we had missed something and it resulted in a poor outcome (very very rarely happened). Responsibility goes hand in hand with autonomy. [ozmidwifery] Fw: Student Nurse Midwife
Please reply to Michelle [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you are able to help. - Original Message - Hi. My name is Michelle Munro and I am currently a registered nurse and student nurse midwife in the United States at the University of Michigan. I am writing regarding a possible student midwifery experience in Australia. During our final semester of midwifery school we complete an apprenticeship of sort where we work with a midwife about 40 hours a week based on her schedule. In the past, students have done a portion of this clinical work in other countries in order to gain a broader understanding of midwifery. The apprenticeship is for 3-4 months and I was hoping to complete a portion of this in Australia (maybe a month)in either February, March, or April. I was hoping that you could possibly help with my placement among the midwifery community. I would appreciate any assistance and/or guidance in this endeavor that you could provide. Thank you. [ozmidwifery] The 'wrong' gender
Sorry for cross posting... I have aclient who is due to give birth soonand shereally wants a baby of a particular genderbut the ultrasound has shown the baby to be the opposite. This ismuchmore than being a little disappointed and it doesnot appear to have eased over the course of the pregnancy. She has expressed concerns about how this may potentially affect her labour. She alsoexpresses enormous guilt over having these feelings when she already has healthy children, including one of this gender. She is also concerned about the effects her feelings/thoughts are having and will have on her baby's development. Assuming the ultrasound is correct, has anyone had experience of this either as a mother or care provider? Any words of wisdom? Thanks, Andrea Bilcliff
RE: [ozmidwifery] The 'wrong' gender
Andrea, I recall reading quite a good story on this topic - being disappointed with the sex of the baby - in Practical Parenting earlier this year. The editor wrote about it also in the editorial saying that what spawned the interest in taking on the subject was a lady who contacted her who was feeling awful because she found out she was having a girl when she wanted a boy. I had a search in my copies of the mag but couldn't find it. Perhaps you could contact the magazine and ask what issue it was in. It may help the woman you talk about to read about others with the same feelings and that it is not all that unusual to feel this way. cheers Kylie Carberry Freelance Journalist p: +61 2 42970115 m: +61 2 418220638 f: +61 2 42970747 From: "Andrea Bilcliff" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Reply-To: ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.auTo: "Ozmidwifery" ozmidwifery@acegraphics.com.auCC: "Maternity Coalition Midwives" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [ozmidwifery] The 'wrong' genderDate: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:08:55 +1000 Sorry for cross posting... [ozmidwifery] Lactation after ART
Hi all Does anyone have information on the effect on human lactation of assisted reproductive technology? I am noticing a lot of poor lactation among women who have had a baby by ART. A lot of women seem to be on Domperidone these days at the best of times?? Anyone else experiencing these phenomena? It does make sense that if the woman's hormonal milieau is such that reproduction needs hormonal assistance then lactation is likely to also??? Hi Jenny, Is it that intervention is more common in the management of these women, particularly if ART has resulted in a multiple pregnancy? Intervention can interfere with the initiation of lactation for a number of reasons, as you would be aware. RE: [ozmidwifery] Lactation after ART
So if the management of these women have been the same, do we look to a hormonal cause? Perhaps related to why ART became necessary in the first place. I wonder if there is still a hyperstimulation of the ovaries. Are these women ovulating/menstruating? I will sit back and watch this thread with interest. RE: [ozmidwifery] The 'wrong' gender
Dear Andrea, Over my 30+ years of a midwife, I remember 2 births that were influenced by the ultrasound reports. The first was mother to be of her 5th boy, turned out to be a girl so result was happiness all round! The second event was a mother having 2nd baby, first was a boy and ultrasound said this one would be a girl. Over the labour, mother and support people talked about the nursery being newly painted pink, girls names chosen, grandma had jewellery engraved with this name etc. Baby was a boy! The atmosphere in the birth room was one of shock, mum took a couple of hours to just hold her new baby! I felt incredibly sad for this baby and family but the next day all (at least on the surface!) seemed ok. I think the baby was being bottle fed, though this was decided before the birth. [ozmidwifery] wrong gender
Andrea, This year I've had one woman who dearly wanted a girl. The ultrasound was inconclusive, and she spent many hours agonizing over the gender of this baby. Finally shehad some NET work doneby her chiropractor which helped resolve the issue. Rather than saying, 'its a this, deal with it', getting counseling, or looking for tools to help deal with the feelings of guilt, loss, grief, love and anger can often be of great use to the woman.
