Re: [ozmidwifery] Pinky McKay - an amazing woman

2005-10-02 Thread Safetsleep

pinky
i hv a very keen interest to meet up with you at some stage..
.from what i have heard and read about you our philosophies are very
similar. My background being mainly nursing, parenting, counselling,
community work and nearly 20 years facilitating positive parenting
workshops ,confidence building for women, trust building, sexuality /drug
and alcohol awareness and other educationaly empowering issues .
29 yrs ago for my eldest son, and since then subsequent children, i happen
to have designed a special sleepwrap which allows all natural movement
depending on the age and stage of the baby, except those movements which
could cause harm eg creeping and postional asphyxia, standing, climbing ,
falling, rolling off beds, helping to prevent and correct positional
plagiocephaly (flat/deformed heads) and seems to provde a sence of security
with minimal restriction ( far less even than total swaddling)...mothers
report babies sleeping better/longer/more peacefullyand for them a huge
feeling of peace of mind
13 years ago initial trials spanned 6 months, involved over 300 babies, 600
parents and 15 clinicians from various fields within the medical profession
(no mean feat as you will all know)
since then consistent 20-25% of all first-time babies in nz are
reached...several countries including european countries have received the
product and positive parenting philosophy that accompanies it very well
with the enthusiasm and skill of one of my son's the product is just
starting in the uk
.hospital clinical trials were completed 2 yrs ago under the guidance of a
Canadian cranio-facial plastic surgeon, who was/is concerned with the 20%
(!) of babies who do not respond to alternate head turning nor any of the
interventions currently advocated and who will remain with permanently
different degrees of deformed heads!
copy of the published study on the sleepwrap is on www.safetsleep.com under
'heading 'medical facts'
i have presented 3 medical papers at international level .few details on
the 'About Us' page more info avail.,

there is also a live wee video which takes aprox 2 mins to down load
about 40% of my work over the past 13 years has really amounted to a
community service in terms of education and am exhausted but elated that in
the well over 150,000 babies who have used my sleepwrap ( auditable) we have
not had one reported 'cot death', or accident
the nzcom and individual midwives have been hugly objectively supportive of
the concept
i would love to discuss 'sleep' aspects with you sometime and sincerely
hope you can find some time to tiki-tour the website mentioned above
everything in my literature is based on national and international
stats...and published dataall evidence-based

would welcome dialogue with anyone who is interested and a educational
resource pack is avail.,

warm regards

RE: [ozmidwifery] Pinky McKay - an amazing woman

2005-10-01 Thread jo
My first and fourth baby used a dummy. It was something I was NEVER EVER
going to do before having children and when I found myself with my 8 week
old next to me in bed at night with my little finger in her mouth I decided
it was time. They only used them at sleep time, even when my fourth was a
toddler I used to pin the dummy in her cot during the day and sometimes
would find her standing next to the cot having her dummy 'fix' and then
smiling at me and toddling off.

My first gave it up on her own when she was 20 months, my fourth was
different, she just loved her dummy. On her third birthday (after much talk
and preparation), she left her dummy under her birth/placenta tree for the
fairies to take to their babies. The fairies left her a present now that she
was a 'big girl' and we never heard about it again from her.

I think there's such a lack of ritual and ceremony in our culture. It was a
definite ritual for her, the process and the control she had over it was
really important.

Any my 2 bobs worth!

A tip I heard from a few mums / nannies was that if you make a snip at
the end of the dummy, they quickly get bored of it - it no longer
provides that soothing suck so they become disinterested. My son had a
dummy which helped his reflux when he was little, but gave it up on his
own when his teeth came through - he kept biting holes in them and
ruined them.

With my first, everytime I tried to remove the dummy, she started sucking
her thumb. My dentist said dummies were preferable to thumbs, so she kept
her dummy - nights only - until she was 3.5 and I had something she was
willing to relinquish it for. She gave it up cold turkey and never asked for

Hang in there JO - there are gentle gradual ways to remove a dummy if
you want -Think in terms of "gradually with love" If you are ok about
it dont worry - lots of babies give up dummies by themselves later in
the first year - very few seem to naturally self settle before 4

A dummy is apparently best out by a year because of teeth formation/
distortion but that leaves plenty of time to make changes - there is
no need to make a baby cry it out.

Thanks, Pinky :)
I know it is impossible to avoid eye contact... these dark little eyes
in the middle of the night staring at me with utmost adoration, knowing
that I am about to pick him up and feed him. Even for daytime sleeps...
I tried that, but his eyes just willed me to look at him. So I do. I
look at him and say "nini" and he watches me leave the room. Mostly,
this works just fine! I just have to go in to him every few min when the
dummy falls out when he's on the brink of sleep, to replace it. Again,
I can't help but make eye contact.

I heard there is a window about 5 - 6 months when you can remove the
dummy, so I might wait another month and try then. I am not prepared
for the 'few days of crying' I was told to expect.

Thanks again, :)

I just can't understand why a practice which causes brain damage and

My CHN yesterday suggested I do a 'form of controlled crying' to get my

I feel very sad for my niece, who for whatever the reason stopped sleeping
thru at around 2 1/2 - 3 months. My sister ended up quite stressed b/c her
first bay slep all night almost from the day she brought him hopme. So my
sister did what her MCHN recommended and took her baby to "sleep school " .
Within 2 days the poor possum was "sleeping thru" and my sister commented to
me "She has finally got the message that her mother won't get up to her
during the night any more" At all of 5 months old i found that tragici
might add that my nearly 7 y o still sleeps with me and i dont stress about
it because he won't be there when he is 18, but if he was at least i would
kno who he was sleeping with

Re: [ozmidwifery] Pinky McKay - an amazing woman

2005-09-29 Thread Pinky McKay
thanks Janet - Brenda and I have "made up" and are speaking civilly to each
other re the dilemma of confused identity and schedules versus mother
support.

I am currently writing a new book on infant sleep - all sleep stories/
memories/ anecdotes - welcome.

Better clarify - I will not be advocating parent directed feeding,
controlled crying or leaving babies to cry it out.

please email me offline if you want to share

Hi,

Just thought I would let everyone know that there is no way Pinky would

ever

be in agreement with the Ezzo's and their teachings. In fact Pinky spends
quite a lot of time with parents difusing the terrible belief systems
they
have, that were put in place by such people as the Ezzo's, Tizzie Hall
and

Gina Ford. Pinky's books are wonderful as a tool against such teachings.
They encourage parents to follow their instincts, trust in themselves and
also give great practical advice when needed.

I have met Pinky online and in real life and heard her speakshe
is

one of the best and most passionate speakers I have ever heard. Check out
her site and read her books they are really gentle and wonderful.
http://www.pinky-mychild.com/

I wonder Brenda if you were thinking of Tizzie Hall. She is a shocker and
her attitude is terrible towards babies and children. She makes heaps of
money out of really bad advice. But I won't get on to the Tizzie subject

it

makes me dizzie! lol!

Love Abby
