Subject: [ozmidwifery] Expressing

Have we any experiences here on women who have difficulty expressing. I
suppose I'm just feeling a bit frustrated (bear with me) and a bit sad as
I've finished BF my 9 month daughter as the trauma to my breasts from the
biting was just becoming too sore and unsettling - unfortunately she
didn't
just 'nip', it was a full-on bite with 8 teeth, more coming and would just
about give the breast a shake as well!!

Have had three chidren (no more - so it's the end of my BF era now) and
with
all of them have struggled with expressing. The time period taken up to
get
50ml of EBM can be over 30 mins sometimes, and unfortunately with three
littlie's even getting up in the middle of the night so there was no
interruptions or distractions, still can hand or Kanesan pump express only
50-60ml - and no matter how gentle I am, it is still uncomfortable (that's
being kind). Hmmm. Yet I'm sure when BF that the baby gets 3-4 times
that
 amount.

 Just venting - thanks.

 Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl,

Most mothers find that the secret of expressing a good amount is in the
letdown. The pump will get as much milk out as the baby would. It can be
tough to get a good letdown when you are stressed and have other children
running around. 50 mls at a time sounds pretty good to me, actually..
However much milk you are giving her is great. You've done a great job.

Would you consider putting her back to the breast ina few days or weeks? I
know it's excruciating when they bite, but mostly they get the idea that
biting is not appreciated, and give it up. Even much older children, with a
full set of teeth, learn not to bite. It may seem all too much now, but in
a week things may look different.

Breastpump technology has moved on, too. Medela have a new breastpump, the
symphony, which you can hire through the Australian Breastfeeding
Association in many areas. They claim that it can stimulate a letdown much
more quickly and yield a higher volume of milk. I'm about to try one myself
as I wish to build up my supply. I have no personal experience yet. For
more information you can go to

Hope that helps

Hi Cheryl
I'm with Barb here. The secret to expressing is not just
allowing yourself unrushed time to work with your breast but also in the
technology used to assist. Absolutely nothing wrong with hand expressing but
there are many much better pumps on the market that the Kanesan pump which acts
too much like a vacuum cleaner for my liking. Medela have a very good range,
Avent's range is not too bad either explore some pump alternatives via ABA. All
of Barb's other thoughts are also valid- sometimes a little time away will help
both you and your babe
Best of luck

Oops.

I said "The pump will get as much milk out as the baby
would."

Of course I meant that the pump will never get as much out as
the baby will.

ear)
