Re: [ozmidwifery] GP's and OB's selling Elevit Vitamin Supplement

2003-06-21 Thread hplerchbacher

Hi Deidre,

Elevit(spelt without the 'e') is
asupplement of 'vitamins minerals for pregnancy
lactation' (so printed on the package). Produced by Roche. The
starter packconsists of5 tablets, one for each day.I believe
the drug companies distribute free samples to GPs and Obstetricians as a mean of
marketing.

Each tablet contains:

11 Vitamins
Thiamine nitrate (Vitamin B1)
   1.55 mg
Riboflavine (Vitamin B2)

  1.8 mg
Nicotinamide (Vitamin
B3)
  19 mg
Calcium pantothenate (Vitamin B5)
 10 mg
Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin
B6)2.6 mg
Cynocobalamin (Vitamin B12)
   4.0
microgram
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

 100 mg
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
12.5
microgram
dl-a-Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin
E)15 mg
Biofin (Vitamin H)

200
microgram
Folic acid

  800 mircogram

7 Minerals and trace
elements
Calcium

  125 mg
Iron

60
mg
Magnesium

 100 mg
Phosphorus

 125 mg
Copper

   1 mg
Manganese

 1 mg
Zinc

7.5
mg

Some of our mothers take it because it has all the
vitamins, especially vitamin C, whichhelps iron absorption. Usually
recommended by GPs. I believe it is a little bit more expensive than the
ordinary iron supplements. The tablet itself is actually huge. May be off
puttingfor mothers who have difficulty with taking tablets

You can contact Roche Consumer Health on its free
call 1800 023 884 for further details. I only know all these because I picked
upa sample when I was in NACE conference in Sydney. : --))

Hope the above info helps.

Dear Denise,

Yes, the AMA is obviously got a Nation wide campagin going on this
matter.

As far as the media is concerned (as well as the pollies) here in Brisbane
- and in other States too - we write, call the media and local and State
pollies, ask for meetings.

The ACMI is certainly trying to bring to it to the attention at the
National Level at least to the pollies and the media that Midwifery care is the
cost effective go.

The Maternity Coalition is doing all it can to maintain a profile with the
media and government about this issue, and the inequity of choice for maternity
care for women and that there is no need to 'rescue' obs from anything.

As part of Birth Action Group and Maternity
Coalition Qld. we have gone out of our way to make sure the media never grows
cold on birthing and midwifery issues. Every week we have someone writing
in or answering comments to the editor about different articles. Probably
one of the most effective tools we have found is to get some media on side. We
have a terrific women working for our major paper who attended a birth with me
and was enthrawled by what she has been privaledged to see.
She is very happy to write for us and to be of
influence in getting articles in the paper. I urge you all to write now.
Ring up tell them you want a story done. Offer to speak about the issues. Get a
few midwives and mums to gether and tell your stories. New is powerful. And one
of things we are doing this week is meeting to discuss how we can make the media
work for us. The other thing we are doing is going for a grant to educate
the public through the media.
There is plenty you can do as individuals. You just
have to be diligent. Don't let sleeping dogs lie. Get up and
biteem!!!

I guess this is a somewhat disturbing joke in afew

  Rhonda.

BREAST FEEDINGA woman and a baby were in the doctor's examining room,
waiting for the doctorto come in. The doctor arrived, examined the
baby, checked his weight, found it somewhat below normal, and asked if the
baby was breast fed or bottle fed."Breast fed", she replied."Well,
strip down to your waist", the doctor ordered. So she did.He pressed,
kneaded, rolled, cupped and pinched both breasts for a while in a
detailed, rigorously thorough examination. Motioning her to get dressed,
he said, "No wonder this baby is underweight. You don't have any
milk.""I know", she said, "I'm his Grandma, but I'm glad I
  came."

[ozmidwifery] blank emails

2003-06-21 Thread Deliverywoman
Hello Listers,I seem to be having a bit of difficulty with some of
the e-mails that are posted to these lists and also birthnews. Some
e-mails come through totally blank, they are mainly from certain
people. I don't know if all these people are using the same ISP such
as bigpond, optusnet or whatever.I am looking into opening a new
yahoo email account as I like to keep my 'mid' things separately which is
what this address was for, but am experiencing these blank emails. I
might point out that sometimes when a reply has been sent with the original
message that appeared blank to me is then visible. I would
just like to ask some of the main people that I receive the emails blank
what e-mail they are sending with if you could reply to me off list that
would be appreciated, if it is possible could you please send the reply to
both address' below, so I can see if it is still blank when you e-mail me
directly or if it just via the list that they appear blank. The main
listers that I receive the e-mails as blank are:Julie
ClarkeMarilyn Kleidon (although every now and again I do get ones to
read)Graham KellyLarry Megan there are a few
others, but had not written them down, if I am able to find out that it is
the same e-mail program, I might be able to fix the problem from my
own ISP email account. If not then I will set about creating a new
email address via yahoo as I also had problems with the lists when I used my
hotmail address. That is what made me create this email primarily for
mid related lists and yahoo groups. The two emails I would like those
mentioned above to email me their e-mail that they use to post are this href="">deliverywoman @ dodo.com.au

am using at dodo, so if someone might be able to suggest what the problem
may be I would appreciate any input to help.My apologies for this

[ozmidwifery] The baby born in the shower - mum not knowing she was pregnant.

2003-06-21 Thread Deliverywoman
Hi everyone,I haven't seen any emails from these lists in regard to
the recent birth of the baby in the shower where the mother did not know she
was pregnant.I think that this scenario is a perfect example of how
society and the medical community has instilled the fear of birth and the
fact that it can only be done safely with doctors and interventions etc. and
reinforcing to the pregnant woman that 'maybe I can't give birth
"normally"'The fact that this woman did not know she was pregnant
allowed her to have no current expectations of labour or fear etc. (How
different would her labour and birth would have been if it was a known
pregnancy). She was totally able to react inately to what pain she
was feeling because she did not know they were contractions. Her instinct
sent her to a warm shower to reduce the pain.I am sure (although it
was not stated) that she tried tolay down, move as desired to help
reduce the pain she was experiencing. She didn't describe the
'excruciating pain' until the babe's head was crowning and the father was
able to see that there was a baby coming Only then did it become an
'emergency' with him dialling 000 to get the ambulance there pronto as my
'wife' is having a baby right now in the shower. The 000 operator
talked him through the final steps of 2nd stage. It also shows that
our body's ability to birth alone is certainly there, as this woman's
contractions were increasing in strength, whilst she was able to tell they
were getting worse her bodies normal endorphins were not inhibited by any
adrenaline released due to the fear of the pain of labour and birth and any
other fears that she might have experienced due to an unplanned pregnancy
etc.Whata wonderful and beautiful story that so totally
reinforces that our bodies are able to do this without any intervention and
so naturally. To the point that I am 'envious' of this woman who
escaped the telling of horror stories of birth and being told what to do and
not to do.Mind you I am certainly aware that this could have had a
totally different ending if there were any serious complications, but even
then she and her partner would have known with the increase in pain etc. and
have called 000 more than likely in time to prevent any serious
problems or the extreme the loss of a life.Anyone else hear feel the
same when hearing the news.--Yours in Childbirth and

That has been my experience too. I thought it was probably me, but
maybe it is not. I am only experiencing the problem with birthnews, not
with ozmid. I emailed Jan about this, but she couldn't explain it. At
first, all the birthnews emails I received were blank. Now, I receive
some and not others. There is no consistency between them - for
example, I have received both blank and usual emails from the same people.
