Yes, I finally found the selection (not very intuitive to me):

  Tools | Preferences | Editor Style

and there is a font selection button.  Unfortunately, Padre will not
take the font I want to use (just installed through the Debian 8
packages (fonts-freefont-otf).  I have filed a bug for the problem.

You may be able to change fonts with Padre's preferences (or settings).

Unfortunately, I cannot check on my system: padre no longer runs on 
Debian/unstable.

[Padre-dev] Improve Padre unicode handling

I notice the Padre editing windows on my laptop (Debian 8, Linux, 64-bit)
does not display unicode characters except as one or more code boxes of
some sort. Can anyone say how to fix that as a user, or is it something
that can be fixed in the Padre code?

I am particularly interested because of the lack of unicode editors that
can handle Perl 6 and unicode well.
