Re: anyone aware of that blasted dvd decoder?

2004-10-28 Thread doc
Strangely enough I installed power dvd before I discovered win media player
9 used powerDVD's info to bolster itself. So basically install power dvd
then go back to media player you will still find it more accessible than
PDVD by itself.

Gary,
A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:
*  it's free
* it's easy to use and fully accessible
* it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year
genre
* you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
* you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of tracks
to be ripped into a single track
* you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice versa
* you can record directly from your line in using CDEX
Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select from a
menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
altogether?

You wil be asked to keep your contact list and preferences when uninstall
skype. When installing the new version you will have the same preferences
set and you will have your contact list. If you are running windows xp then
take a copy of the directory drive\documents and setting\your
username\application data\skype. Then you will have a baackup for your
contact list. You can only copy if skype is unloaded. If ever need to
reinstall your system you just need to copy the skype directory back to the
position from wich you make the copy. Skype can also be installed on top of
older versions. This way also keeps your contacts and settings.

cd ripping

2004-10-28 Thread Cris Hall
At the beginning of this year, I ripped our cd collection using windows
media player. I used it because it was free and easily available, and it
seemed to work reasonably well. Now that I have winamp pro, I would be
interested in comparisons between the two, as well as people`s thoughts, in
general, about cd ripping. I make no claims about windows media player
being the best, but what`s done is done.
Many thanks,
Cris Hall

Hey Folks,
I have a previous version of Skype. It was the version that came out last
week. 1.0.0.94. Of course, version 97 is now out.
I want to know if anyone knows if doing a clean install of new versions of
Skype is necessary or if Skype users generally install their new versions
directly over the top of the old ones?
I am not a fan of the latter method, however, I see no way to save my
contact lists. If anyone can tell me how to do a fresh install of Skype,
and
at the same time, save my contact list, I would truly be appreciative...

Dear Steve,
Thanks for the heads up! I just read over the info you sent out, plus I

Hi John.
Ripping 350 CD's is going to take you some time and you're probably not
going to want to repeat the exercise again. Given that I would recommend
that you rip a CD a number of times in different formats to make sure you're
happy with the results before you embark on such a project.
If you have sufficient disc space, why compromise sound quality? It would
be disappointing a few months down the line to find that you didn't like the
sound of all of those ripped CD's.
For my part, I rip to MP3; yes, other formats are now getting better support
on portable players but MP3 is by far the most universal format. I use the
Lame encoder which is recognised as one of the top MP3 encoders. I rip at
320kbps. I have 160GB of internal disc space and an 80GB external drive so
what does it matter about larger files when you know that they are covering
the same frequency range as CD at this bit rate. Using CDEX or Notmad
Explorer, I can re-encode any of these files off to my MP3 player at a lower
bit rate and still have my master collection ripped at the highest quality
possible.
If you're really needing to get these files as small as possible I've
already seen some great advice from other listers but these are just a few
thoughts before you start ripping that music. I am about 75% through
ripping my collection of nearly 500 CD's and I wouldn't want to start again.

  Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is
the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

  *  it's free
  * it's easy to use and fully accessible
  * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year
  genre
  * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
  * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
tracks
to be ripped into a single track
  * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice versa
  * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Re: Help with converting music

2004-10-28 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Reta.

The simplest way to compress the files to a smaller size is to either use
WMA or OG format rather than MP3. You could also reduce the bit rate to a
value that you're happy with.

Again, you just need to be mindful as to what you want to do with your
collection in the future. If you want to use a portable MP3 player you'd
need to check compatibility. If you wanted to burn an audio CD from your
collection to play in a high end hi-fi system, you're going to want a full
frequency range so nothing less than 256kbps will do this.

However, if you're not likely to do either of these, 128kbps could sound
great through your PC speakers.

  Hi John.

Ripping 350 CD's is going to take you some time and you're probably not
going to want to repeat the exercise again. Given that I would
recommend
that you rip a CD a number of times in different formats to make sure
you're
happy with the results before you embark on such a project.

If you have sufficient disc space, why compromise sound quality? It
would
be disappointing a few months down the line to find that you didn't like
the
sound of all of those ripped CD's.

For my part, I rip to MP3; yes, other formats are now getting better
support
on portable players but MP3 is by far the most universal format. I use
the
Lame encoder which is recognised as one of the top MP3 encoders. I rip
at
320kbps. I have 160GB of internal disc space and an 80GB external drive
so
what does it matter about larger files when you know that they are
covering
the same frequency range as CD at this bit rate. Using CDEX or Notmad
Explorer, I can re-encode any of these files off to my MP3 player at a
lower
bit rate and still have my master collection ripped at the highest
quality
  possible.

If you're really needing to get these files as small as possible I've
already seen some great advice from other listers but these are just a
few
thoughts before you start ripping that music. I am about 75% through
ripping my collection of nearly 500 CD's and I wouldn't want to start
again.

I'd recommend Nero to back up your data files to either CD or DVD. It has
a
verify feature that will check that all has been backed up successfully.

I'd still recommend CDEX for ripping though.

 Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select
from
 a
 menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
 altogether?

 Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is
 the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

 *  it's free
 * it's easy to use and fully accessible
 * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number,
 year

 genre
 * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
 * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
 tracks
to be ripped into a single track
 * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
 * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Dear High Criteria Sales Division,
From the news of your release information, on Version 5.o, it is a little
unclear, as to whether or not a new registration key, is necessary, for
4.5
Professional Edition customers. I am a registered user of 4.5, plus I was
just sent a plain text version, of the manuals for both 4.5 and 5.o, upon
request, because I am a blind customer, whose ability to open PDF's was
practically impossible. To sum up, can I just download 5.o, with the

which is a big hassle for blind users!)?

Please advise me on this, won't you?

Now I don't have any scripts for jaws loaded to use in winmx , but it

Hello, here's a new product from the company who brought you the Griffin
Power Mate. I don't know if this is accessible as far as the software
though. I thought you'd want to check it out.

Rip
the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
 altogether?

 well
as join them? Just want to dot my I's cross T's. I've got

 Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this
is
 the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

 *  it's free
 * it's easy to use and fully accessible
 * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number,
year
 genre
 * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
 * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number
of
 tracks
to be ripped into a single track
 * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
 * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Save or Save As in Total Recoder Question?

2004-10-28 Thread Sylvester Thomas
Greetings! I am using Total Recorder Standard Edition, and wondered if when I save a
file what the difference was between choosing the save or the save as options when
saving a file? I noticed when I use save as the file is saved as a winamp file and I
am not sure how to re load it into Total Recorder to work with it. So I wondered if I
need to use the save option as opposed to the save as option? I hope this makes
sense. I have a file on my desktop I created called recordings and would like to keep
all my files there until I need to re load them into the recorder for splitting and
such. Well Thanks for Any and All Help in this matter! Take Care! Sly

Dell Laptop And Compatible Sound Caards Question?

2004-10-28 Thread Paul Hutson
Hi listers.

I am running a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop computer with a Maestro MPU401
sound card and I am trying to either find a driver that will make my sound
card into a multichannel sound card. If not, I wonder if there is a
compatible sound card that is a multichannel sound card that will work with
my computer setup?
It was suggested by my techy friend that I may have a proprietary setup and
that there might NOT be a compatible sound card that will work.
So I would VERY much appreciate any ideas you all have about this as I am
going NUTS trying to operate without a multichannel soundcard.
FYI, I am running Win98 SE, Jaws 4.51, Dec Access32 software syn, and Winamp
5.05.

From the news of your release information, on Version 5.o, it is a little
unclear, as to whether or not a new registration key, is necessary, for

which is a big hassle for blind users!)?

Please advise me on this, won't you?

CDEX cannot split tracks. If you want to split MP3 tracks, check out
MP3CLIP. It's free and easy to use.

 Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this is
the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

 *  it's free
 * it's easy to use and fully accessible
 * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number, year

 genre
 * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
 * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number of
tracks
to be ripped into a single track
 * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
 versa
 * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Well, so far, Nero shows as having the worst tech. support, CDRWin and
 Roxio
answered the most quickly, but Roxio says they have problems with XP's
Service Pack 2. That leaves CDRWin with only two functions I'd like
 to
 have
available, but have to figure out other ways to do:
I want to rip all my cds to hard disc and want the tracks labeled from
 the
info on a data base, and I need to figure a way to make mp3s from
 wavs.
 Thanks for the continued help.

Oh shoot, I'm sorry. You're quite right. Brain cramp. You can create
a
wave file with CDRWIN and then convert it with something like Gold
  Wave.
This is what I do, and because I do it so often, I fused the
procedures
together in my mind. I didn't mean to be confusing.

Easy CDDA Extractor, Gold Wave, CDRWIN, possibly CDEX.
