winamp and windows xp

2005-05-25 Thread Richard Quan

Hi,

Anyone having problems with the newest winamp and windows xp. Ever since my
xp updated something, I can't seem to run winamp without it closing and
sending an error report. The only way I got it to play was to change my
display settings. When I changed them to windows classic theme, winamp would
crash on particular files/streams, i.e. acbradio treasuretrouve. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Help the dummy, win a prize. ok no prize but ...

2005-05-25 Thread Wil James
Hi Rob

You have what you meed for fading down and up the music. Sound Forge
has a feature called Mixing. You have some presets you can use with the
Max command. You use the keystroke ctrl+m to activate this dialog.
When using this command, it is important to have the voice clip you want
to use on your clipboard. If not, this feature will not work.

Under the process menu of Sound Forge, you have several choices. One
you will need is the Fade command from this menu. You can fade a track
in or out. When fading, select to the end of the file from the point
where you want the fade to take place. The standard Windows keystrokes
apply here. Use shift+end to select to the end of the file, then press
alt+p, f, o for fading out the music.

That should get you started.

Subject: Help the dummy, win a prize. ok no prize but ...

Hi everyone,

Well, my goal is to create a podcast. Forget the rss, forget
uploading files, i need help with the most basic of basics.
What I want to do is start with music, podsafe music of course.
I want to fade it down, talk a little bit, fade it back up, or perhaps
fade it out entirely. What software do I need? Can someone give me a
senario so that I can accomplish this small yet important task?
By the bye I do have Window-eyes and Sound Forge 6.0. If Sound
Forge won't work I'm willing to go anywhere, download anything so that I
can get this project started.
Thanks for your help in advance. I know that a lot of you on
the list have recorded stuff for ACB Radio so this may seem like a real
dumb question, but I can't figure it out. Help.

Hi all!
Awhile back, someone on this list suggested a small self executing program

Could someone either send me the file off list or point me to a website where
it could be found? I tried looking but couldn't find it. Thanks!

Subject: good news for winamp and ipod's

just got this story in a newsletter.
IPod users are raving about a plug-in that makes the Winamp digital
jukebox

a better way to manage the iPod than Apple's iTunes.

The plug-in, called
ml_iPod,
allows iPod users to bypass iTunes and manage music collections in
Winamp
instead. The iPod is supposed to work with iTunes only. A new version of
the

software was released Monday.

Justin Frankel, creator of Winamp and the open-source peer-to-peer
software

Gnutella, initially developed ml_iPod, but programming was taken over by
Will
Fisher, a computer science student in the U.K.

Fisher and other developers programmed a slew of features, including the
ability to synch multiple iPods with Winamp, create smart playlists and --
the
most useful option -- the ability to copy songs from an iPod onto a hard
drive.

"A lot of the feedback I get is people thanking me for freeing them from
iTunes," said Fisher. "It shows the dissatisfaction people have with
iTunes."

Apple Computer did not respond to several requests for comment.

To prevent iPod users from easily copying vast libraries of songs from
computer to computer, Apple forbids tracks from being moved off the
iPod --

songs
can only be put onto the iPod. In addition, each iPod is associated with a
single copy of iTunes. The association can be changed, but only if all
songs

on the iPod are erased.

Someone who keeps music on her computer at work could fill up her iPod
with

tracks, take it home and copy the songs onto a home computer using ml_iPod
plugin
and Winamp.

"I firmly believe you should have the right to transfer your music with
any

application you like and if this requires software which circumvents DRM
(digital
rights management), then I don't believe this is ethically wrong," Fisher
said. "I trust our users to use this freedom responsibly and to not steal
music."

For songs purchased at the iTunes Music Store, which are copy protected by
Apple's FairPlay DRM scheme, ml_iPod users must download an application
from

the
Hymn project,
which unlocks the copy protection. Then the ml_iPod plug-in must be
configured to run the hymn.exe file when it encounters protected files,
Fisher explained.

The ml_iPod plug-in has been downloaded half a million times. By
comparison,

EphPod,
a free utility that offers similar functionality, has been downloaded
43,000

times from
Download.com.

The plug-in works with all varieties of the iPod, but some users have
trouble getting the software to work with the iPod Shuffle. Fisher said
there are
plans to make the plug-in available for other digital music players.

ITunes for Windows is an approximately 21-MB download. By contrast, Winamp
is 4.7 MB and the plug-in only takes up 130 KB of space.

"ITunes takes up a lot of resources on the computer. Winamp is a lot
faster," Fisher said. "Indeed, a lot of our users are still using Windows
98, which
iTunes doesn't work on."

Feedback about the plug-in is generally enthusiastic.

"Everything is a breeze and the interface is even easier to use than
iTunes," wrote Doug Sheffer on a Winamp message board.

"Using it with third-gen iPod and Windows ME," wrote Brian Cape in the
Winamp forum. "Absolutely superb, no problems at all. Congratulations and
thanks
-- I thought I was going to have to upgrade my PC to XP in order to use
the

iPod."

End of story

now maybe we can go to ipods new.

Unhandled exception error message when exiting iPodder Beta

2005-05-25 Thread Yardbird
Well, I have this iPodder version installed now and was just exploring what
I can with Jaws, which for the moment all seems pretty inscrutable to me.
Which makes me wonder, is there some place where theyre's a real primer or
instructional text with full explanation, as there would be in an
old-fashioned printed manual? I look through the various menus, and can't
get my mind around any of what I see, yet.

But my actual question is, when I try to exit iPodder properly, I mean from
the task tray, I get this error message I quote in the subject line.
Unhandled exception. What does that mean, or does it matter whether I
understand it? I then am able to exit by pressing enter on either Ignore or
Retry, so I guess it isn't a terminal problem. But is this going to be okay
or cause a problem with my system?

Thanks,
Daniel

 Hi,

I'm dong something I didn't think I'd do, and that is start to look for
alternatives to my beloved Winamp player. The last few versions have been
so buggy, and I now have a huge playlist that chokes Winamp, sometimes.

What free alternative players can anyone recommend? Does anyone have any
experience with the Foobar2000 player? Is it at all screen reader
 friendly?

Any and all suggestions are welcome. And, if there is a way to help Winamp
to handle my ever growing playlist size well that would be even better.

 Thanks.

so buggy, and I now have a huge playlist that chokes Winamp, sometimes.

What free alternative players can anyone recommend? Does anyone have any
experience with the Foobar2000 player? Is it at all screen reader
friendly?

Any and all suggestions are welcome. And, if there is a way to help Winamp
to handle my ever growing playlist size well that would be even better.

Thanks.

~Ann

Tempo Change Plug-in.

2005-05-25 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Folks:

I am looking for a plug-in that will allow me to speed up sound playback in
WinAmp without distorting the audio. Plug-ins such as PaceMaker distorts sound
quite a lot. An example of a good software that will play audio at a faster
tempo without distorting the sound is the Victor Soft Daisy player.
Unfortionately,
that software will not play MP3 files.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

Thanks gang.

Steve! Please find following a clip from the PDF describing the Sony
MZRH910 and it's capability to upload to your computer. Do you really think
the such a professional company like Sony could leave such an obvious
requirement out? Never mind I take that back. Now with that said I will
add that I don't believe it until I see it and I'm blind. That's why I've
secured an agreement with Sony that they will take it back if it's not
everything the blind consumer needs. Then continue on for the bit about a
very popular Sony Digital Audio Tape recorder that three professional
customers including blind ones of mine swear by.

FEATURES
Ability to Record From Multiple Sources (Mic/Line-in) : Use line-in jack on
the Hi-

MD player to transfer and archive legacy formats such as tapes to low cost
1GB Hi-

concerts or meetings. Choose a maximum recording time of up to 45 hours, or

uncompressed/lossless quality depending on specific needs.

Self Recording Upload Feature : Upon transferring a Hi-MD recording to

SonicStageĀ® Music Management System, you will have the option to save in

RE: Roxio5 and CD image files

2005-05-25 Thread russell Bourgoin

Hi,

In ez cd creator, any version through six, when you have the tunes
selected that you'd like to include, simply press control-t. No need to
paste and copy or drag and drop.

Rusty
> At 01:26 AM 5/25/2005, Hamish Mackenzie spake thusly:-

Talk about going all around the houses. Just open up EZ creator and
select either a music or data cd and then select the tracks from within
the ap as mentioned below or cut and paste them into the track list and
then go to the file menu having put a blank cd in the drive and enter on
record. There are a few settings that can be tweaked in here and then
you have your cd. No need for the two steps as below. If you really
want to keep an image of it it offers you that option once the cd is
burned.

Subject: Re: Roxio5 and CD image files

Here's how to do it in version 4.2. Maybe this will work for your
friend. This is from the jfwlite.com site.

Preparation:
1. Close all files running in the "systems tray" that you do not need,
especially "virus checkers".
2. Create a new folder on your hard drive, if you don't know how see
below.
3. Start your "windows explorer" program.
4. You will be positioned on the line just below the "c" hard drive
line.
Hit "alt+f" and enter on the first item. Hit enter on "folder" which is
the first item. You will be in a edit field enter the name of the folder
you wish to create (I used "cdmusic") and hit enter.
5. Return to the desktop.

Begin create CD procedure.
1. Do not put a blank CD into your CD writer until instructed.
2. Hit "insert+f11" (system tray) and arrow down to "adaptec create cd"
and
hit enter.
3. The first item will be "audio sub menu" hit enter.
4. The first item on the next screen will be "audio cd" hit enter on it.
5. This will bring up a screen "Untitled easy Cd creator" and you will
be positioned on the "c" drive, in the tree view, right arrow to open.
6. Arrow down to "program files" (I type "pro" and it goes there) right
arrow to open.
7. Arrow down to "napster" (I type "n" to get there) right arrow to
open.
8. Arrow down to "music" (I type "m" to get there) and hit tab to open
the list.
9. Arrow down to the first title you wish to select and hit the space
bar to select, now you may hold down the control key and arrow down to
the next title you wish to select and hit space bar to select. I wanted
all 21 titles in my "music" folder, so I hit "ctrl+a" to select all.
10. Hit "alt+e" (for edit) and arrow down to "add selected" (you may hit
"s"
to go directly).
11. Tab, this will bring up a edit field "cd title" (this is an optional
entery).
12. Tab again this will bring up "Artist name" (this is optional).
13. Tab again this will put you in "cd layout", here titles will be
arranged alphabetically by artist then by title, you can cut and paste
your titles so as to arrange the order you want the songs on your CD.
14. Now that you have your music arranged in the order you would like it
to appear on the CD, hit "alt+f" (for file), arrow down to "create CD
image"
and hit enter. This will bring up a edit box for "file name", put in
your path and file name, (I used "c:\cdmusic\various").
15. Tab, this puts you in "file type", this is OK as is, proceed to the
next step.
16. Tab, this places you on the "save" button, hit enter.
17. Now the "create CD image" has began, wait a couple minutes then
route your "jaws to PC cursor", arrow up 3 lines, (I set my screen echo
to none), here you can follow the progress of the image creation. When
the creation phase is completed you will be positioned on the "OK", hit
enter.
18. You are now returned to the "untitled Easy CD" menu screen.
19. You are now ready to burn the CD from the image, place a blank CD in
the CD writer and close the drawer.
20. Hit "alt+F" (for file) arrow down to "Create CD from CD image" and
hit enter, you will be in a edit box for "file name", type in the path
and file name you created in the previous phase (I used
"c:\cdmusic\various", this will open the file and begin creating the CD.
With your "jaws" cursor you can follow the progress, this will not take
as long as the previous phase.
When this phase is completed you will have to locate the "OK" and left
click on it to begin to close the process.

Hi, this is Steve. I am trying to help a friend who has Roxio 5 and
wants to create an image file. I have Roxio 6, and use Creator Classic
which I understand, so my options are not the same. It all sounds
unfamiliar to me, thinking it would be

similar. Also, I want to be sure the CDDB option is working.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Windows Media Player question

2005-05-25 Thread Cynthia Handel
When I put a CD in my D drive, it doesn't start to play automatically. I
must have checked something in Windows Media Player to prevent it. But, I
have Windows Media Player and also Real Player on my computer and neither of
these starts automatically. What can I do to change this?

Re: Playing VCD On Cd-Player?

2005-05-25 Thread dennis
no you cant. for the same reason you couldn't play an avi or mpeg file on
one. they aren't audio files. you would have to make an mp3 or wma file or
in the case of a home regular cd player it would have to be a wav file. this
is very easy to do though and if you convert to something like this it will
be a much smaller file and won't take up as much space.

Subject: Re: Minidisc recorder Drawback

Hey there, Will and all. Well, the unit is quite small, and it has
several recording modes, both stereo and mono. The stereo and one of the
mono settings save their files as Windows Media Audio, and
the other two mono modes save their recordings in the proprietary DSS
format. All the modes sound quite good. The length of the recording time
is as follows, approximately: High-quality stereo, 1HR
10MN; standard stereo 2HR 20MN; High Quality Mono 4HR 40MN; standard Mono
10HR; and low quality mono 22HR. I use mine all the time. The menus all
default to there normal setting after
you've used them, so there is only a little bit of memorization in order
to operate the unit. Battery life is very nice; and it comes with a USB
docking cradle, so you do not necessarily need the USB cord,
if you don't want to use it. Also, it can be used as a USB microphone and
a USB speaker, which can be good if you are using dictation software such
as Dragon of ViaVoice. It also has voice
activated recording and mic sensativity selections. On playback, it comes
with some different noise cancellation settings. The buttons are fairly
big, for the most part, and the speaker sounds pretty
good. The ear buds that come with the unit are very decent, and it even
comes with a carry-case that is cool, too. It uses two tripple A
batteries, and it has a headphone input, 3.5MM and a mic input,
also 3.5MM. That is the standard MINI stereo plug, in case I got the
millimeters wrong. There you have some of the more useful features, and
the price tag is around US $149, but it can be found on
the internet a little cheaper. Sometime in the not-too-distant future, I
may do a review of this little recorder. I trust this information is
helpful to the list.

Shane,

I know the DS-2 and the WS-200s. The DS-2 has bigger buttons and a
bigger speaker. It can only record up to one hour in its S-HQ mode,
because it has 64 megs of memory and uses 128 KBPS for its S-HQ mode.
The WS-200s can record up to four hours in its S-HQ mode, because it has
128 megs of memory and uses 64 KBPS. None of the two can be used with an
AC adapter. One can listen to the end of the last recording with the
DS-2 by skipping to it and then pressing back, while in stop mode. This
isn't possible on the WS-200s, because the WS is just a note taking
recorder, while Olympus sees the DS-2 as a kind of dictation machine.
Also, to connect the DS-2 with a PC, one has to use a USB cable, but the
WS-200s has a built-in USB plug.
