Hello TJ,

On Wednesday, February 1, 2006, 9:31:21 PM, you bellowed the following:
napster owned as far as searchability

Actually, I have to say that Audio Galaxy, when it was around, beat
Napster hands down, especially for finding obscure stuff. I also really
liked the interface, because you could remotely queue files.

What's to explain? Sound Forge is a more polished and
highly-developed program than Goldwave. I use Goldwave, but for most
things, Sound Forge is at least its equal. So, while I haven't
tested it, it doesn't surprise me that its converters are faster than
Goldwave's.

There were some focus issues on Winamp's part with the playlist editor
through part of the 5.0x series. I don't remember exactly where they
started or at what point they were fixed, but it seems to me like everything
was back to normal with it by maybe v5.11 or 5.111, something like that, at
least with Jaws. Window-Eyes still has some weird issues with the playlist
editor even now, but it's nothing that can't be overcome.

install it. There are links floating around all over the place, go wherever
you want, but the official one is:

Everything should work right with 513_pro, and yes you can do everything
with it that you could with the older pro version. You don't even have to
re-enter the registration key, etc., assuming that you did that when you
got
your original copy of pro. Somebody else will have to take over with
regard
to the playlist editor questions, as I don't have Jaws personally--I just
remember there being issues with it in the 5.0 series and that they were
 later resolved.

Re: surprising discovery

2006-02-02 Thread Brent Harding
Maybe it has to do with the speed of disk access and the amount of ram. For
me, I use the demo of goldwave pretty much as a sound converter to convert
in batch long 2-3 hour shows I record with Replay AV from ASF to wave files.
Then, I open each one up and use autoqueue to split them into hourly chunks
so winamp's sqr crossfader bugs don't exhibit as I fast-forward commercials
with my Firefly remote. I can convert and split a show in probably 5 minutes
or so, maybe less. If I converted to the same bitrate mp3 that the stream
came down as, I'd lose quality but it is talk radio I record, and wouldn't
have expected it to sound as good as it does coming from the stream of an AM
station.

this version is to fix a major security vulnerability recently
 discovered in Winamp.

Also Winamp 5.2 build 393 beta is now available and one place where
you can download it from is at
 http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Winamp_5_Full/1066336873/1.
Here are the changes in this version:

Fixes a memory leak when using playlist winshade mode in the modern skin
 Fixes in_mp3 security hole
Added experimental skin-colored icons to media library tree
Changed the Devices parent node (in media library) to Rip Burn
 Portable Media Player fixes
 Miscellaneous fixes

I am gradually completing a Total Recorder tutorial as part of the
Sound Computing series. So far, two major portions are complete,
with at least one more to follow. Sound Computing costs $9.00 for a
series of fifty articles, or at least fifteen hours of reviews,
mini-tutorials and other articles. You can find out about subcribing
and get other questions answered at www.topdotenterprises.com/scinfo.htm.

RE: alternate to winmx

2006-02-02 Thread André van Deventer
But with all the nice things said about peer to peer networks like SinMX and
Audio Galaxy, there is a down side to this also.

It has happened to me quite often that I get very excited about finding a
certain song. But when I play it, it is either not complete or the sound
quality is terrible.

I have switched from WinMX to
www.allofmp3.com

For my music download purposes and am more than satisfied. The music is not
free but at least you have some control about what you get. And I like the
fact that you can choose your encoding. You actually pay for the bandwidth
you use and not for each track.

Again, you will probably not find everything on this site that you will find
on e.g. WinMX, but I feel that the advantages more than outweigh the
disadvantages!!

APH Tape Recorders

2006-02-02 Thread Bruce Toews
I've used APH tape recorders sicne the mid-seventies. There was something
in those earlier units that I never quite understood, and I was wondering
if anyone knew.

On the jack panel in front of the machine, the jacks went like this: mini
earphone jack, quarter-inch earphone jack, remote switch jack, mike jack,
auxiliary out jack, auxiliary in jack, then there was one more jack right
at the end whose purpose I was never able to ascertain. Does anyone happen
to know what this jack was for?
