Richard! It's simple to install a new sound device. You could even
get a USB or Firewire device that just plugs in. You don't have to do
anything with your onboard sound device. You could use both it and the new
one simultaneously.

RE: Creative Zen players and accessibility.

2006-03-21 Thread Milton M. Ota
The Creative Zen players are okay in its accessibity. You can transfer your
MP3 files using Windows Explorer. The unit supports Audible and WMA which is
the Windows Media Audio format and WMA (DRM) Digital Rights Management.

I have the 1 GB model which has the FM radio and recorder but to get to
those options via the menu are very difficult. If you are just going to use
the Zen as a player, its great.

Place marker is held for the last file you are listening too.

I actually have the Creative Zen Nano 1 GB model.

Let me know privately if you have more questions.

2006-03-21 Thread Terese Ann Goren
I really enjoy my Jukebox Zen Extra. It does use windows explorer to
transfer files. There is an easy to use play list
manager. Unfortunately, you do need sight to work the menus in order
to change playlists on the unit itself but the player itself is
easily manageable by learning sequences. Would be groovy if Rock Box
worked on it.

Yes, I'd agree with you there. Sound Forge's noise reduction is bad, Gold
Wave's is terrible. I prefer staying away from noise reduction of any kind
except in the case of dire emergencies, since at the very best of time
with noncommercial-grade noise reduction you lose quality.

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the audio

the best and of course, most accessible program.

Thanks,

Re: Expandable flash MP3 players.

2006-03-21 Thread Bob Seed
Looked at a couple of MP3 players yesterday. I checked out a sand disc model
and a model that is made by iriver. Since I do have some vision I was
looking for screen size and not necessarily use of buttons. It appears from
the outset that perhaps the iriver might be a little more user friendly
although the sand disc model had a button configuration that formed a
sighted x. Flash cards run about 70 dollars in Canada, but probably could be
purchased much cheaper else where. The flash cards come in a hard plastic
case large enough to put a Braille number on it. You could organize your
flash cards and also keep Braille index cards with corresponding numbers. If
I had my druthers flash would be the way to go. A little on the expensive
side, but well worth it, as with these devices there is no moving mechanical
parts that can wear out.
I also looked at a Sony 20 gig model. A little on the expensive side. The
downside of this model is that you can not add a flash card.

 Hi Folks:

Does anyone know of any good expandable flash MP3 players. This might be
a
partial answer to accessibility in that, one could organize one's files
via
 SD cards.

On another point, would there be any point in establishing another list
for
Blind folks and their use of, and interest in, mp3 players?

 Thanks gang.

Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the audio
side of things. I've begun ripping my cd's to 320kbps mp3. Now, I want to be

able to make smaller mp3's from these files, say 192kbps mp3's. I have
winamp pro, Windows Media Player, and real player 10 on my system. Will any
of these programs allow for the conversion? If not, is there a free program
for changing bitrate? And again, if there isn't a free alternative, what is
the best and of course, most accessible program.

Thanks,

Just be aware that if you convert an MP3 from one bit rate to antoher,
you'll have less audio quality that if you'd just saved the file in the
smaller bitrate int he first place, because that conversion will involve
uncompressing and recompressing the MP3.

2006-03-21 Thread Jouie
Sir Bruce. They like that anyway... I just give them the software and the
result would be what they have decided to have. I don't know much about that
quality or something, but, I learned that while the file is getting smaller,
the quality is also getting lower. In fact, I have here a WMA file that is
only 500+KB in size. You can even put it on a diskette! I'm not that sure
about the quality as I said. But, I know that the sound is something
different compared to its MP3 format.

Links? I'm not sure because my two unpopular/untraditional programs here
came from my friends. I have an idea about where can you get them but, I
will still make sure about that. One named switch. It's a small file and
its main feature is to convert WMA to mp3/wav or otherwise. But, if the
file is already in mp3 format, you can just rip it again and set that
bitrate thing to your chois. The other one is the CDX. I'm not sure if
you have an idea on this. But, unfortunately, the files should come from
the CD.

 Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the
audio side of things. I've begun ripping my cd's to 320kbps mp3. Now,
 I want to be

able to make smaller mp3's from these files, say 192kbps mp3's. I have

winamp pro, Windows Media Player, and real player 10 on my system.
Will any of these programs allow for the conversion? If not, is there
a free program for changing bitrate? And again, if there isn't a free
alternative, what is the best and of course, most accessible program.

 Thanks,
 Scott

Is it not possible to put station play list on a lap top with jaws and
access the studio from a remote location? There should be a way to
access
the studio play list program from a remote location, and at the same
time
have control of the operational functions of that program from yor
remote
site. Stations were I live do it all the time
and there is no operator at the studio site. The guy doing the remote
has
control of all of the programming. At the end of the remote the show
host

Subject: converting mp3 from
one bitrate to another

Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about
these things, but I am still
new to the audio
side of things. I've begun
ripping my cd's to 320kbps
mp3. Now, I want to be
able to make smaller mp3's
from these files, say 192kbps
mp3's. I have
winamp pro, Windows Media
Player, and real player 10 on
my system. Will any
of these programs allow for
the conversion? If not, is
there a free program
for changing bitrate? And
again, if there isn't a free
alternative, what is
the best and of course, most
accessible program.

Thanks,
Scott

Re: accessible computer remote programs

2006-03-21 Thread Bob Seed
If one is only doing the occasional cut in does it really matter how good
the voice quality is? In the remotes that I have heard the voice quality is
as good as the streaming audio that we hear on our computers from ACB radio.
I have also heard remotes were the announcer was using a cell phone for cut
ins. I would much prefer using a computer for that job. It just sounds
better.

I wonder if a computer could be used to do a cut-in like this? I would
assume you would need to hear the station audio as well. I heard the net

hi

XP did not tell you that the file was a virus, all it said was that opening
this type of file could *potentially* be dangerous.
But since Winamp is not a virus, you are ok.

Re: accessible computer remote programs

2006-03-21 Thread Bob Seed
The delay isn't that significant, besides that it sure beats using a cell
phone. In order to make it work properly you would have to use DSL or cable.
I have listened to remotes being done with the use of a lap top, and believe
it or not the quality of the remote was surprisingly very good These were
cut ins and I am not sure whether they were recorded at the remote and sent
back to the station as an audio file to be opened by the radio automation.
It was certainly much better than using a convenntual telephone line. .

I wonder if a computer could be used to do a cut-in like this? I would
assume you would need to hear the station audio as well. I heard the net
isn't that good for doing it because the latency will give you a few
seconds
 of dead air.

If one is only doing the occasional cut in does it really matter how
good
the voice quality is? In the remotes that I have heard the voice quality
  is
as good as the streaming audio that we hear on our computers from ACB
  radio.
I have also heard remotes were the announcer was using a cell phone for
  cut
ins. I would much prefer using a computer for that job. It just sounds
  better.

How could you even send voice down? The idea of doing that would allow
  one
to still have good quality music with potentially lesser quality voice
depending on the bandwidth available where one were to remote from.

that's correct! The source of the music would not come from the

I doubt you could send audio down the remote connection live. The
idea
sounds good for shoutcasting when you must use dialup. My idea would
   be
   to
send 14.4k voice up the line, having a return of the same speed, but
  let
   the
music originate on the end with the broadband.

Is it not possible to put station play list on a lap top with jaws
  and
access the studio from a remote location? There should be a way to
   access
the studio play list program from a remote location, and at the
same
   time
have control of the operational functions of that program from yor
   remote
site. Stations were I live do it all the time
and there is no operator at the studio site. The guy doing the
remote
   has
control of all of the programming. At the end of the remote the
show
   host
simply switches control back to the studio and the automation
takes
   over.
This same technology is used to turn transmitters on and off and
even
switch
power remotely with speech friendly prompts.

If you don't have JFW Pro, you will have to pay for the upgrade to that
version. In addition, you will have to pay another additional $200 for
 the
privilege of allowing JFW to give you access to a program that comes with
Windows XP Pro and everyone else can use for free.

If you use WindowEyes, you do not have this restriction, and you can use
Remote Desktop right out of the box.

Hello Karen. Nero Burning ROM will burn on to DVD blank media just fine.
I use it all the time and is very speech friendly. I still use version
6.6 because I have not taken the plunge into version 7.x but I still
 highly recommend Nero.

I am using Windows Xp professional SP2.

Does anyone know were I can get some software for burning DVD's.

Subject: converting mp3 from one bitrate to another

 Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the audio
side of things. I've begun ripping my cd's to 320kbps mp3. Now, I want to
 be
able to make smaller mp3's from these files, say 192kbps mp3's. I have
winamp pro, Windows Media Player, and real player 10 on my system. Will
 any
of these programs allow for the conversion? If not, is there a free
 program
for changing bitrate? And again, if there isn't a free alternative, what
 is
the best and of course, most accessible program.

 Thanks,
 Scott
