I'm being told to get a 2 gig, correct?

 Jim,

The R09 is definitely very useable. It has menus, but the menus do not
wrap, and there aren't that many of them. There are also some dedicated
switches on the back of the unit that do not require menus. In addition,
all of the controls on the device are logically laid out and very easy to
use. I have had one for about a month now, and love it. I suggest you
 head
on over to www.blindcooltech.com and check out some of the several
 podcasts
there dealing with the R09. There are a few there done by Neal Ewers that
 are excellent.

 Hello there,

I know there was a discussion on a related topic on this list for a while,
but I didn't get to really look at it or anything.
I'd like for people to respond to me off list and let me know of their
experiences with this gadget. I hope it will work, if I decide to get it.
I'm totally blind and want to make sure that I can use it.

Hi Bob you wrote:
Subject: Re: Iriver H10 5gb

Hi Keith. I'm still looking. We all keep looking for the unit that is just
right.
*Well rockbox rules for the MP3 and OGG koddex. You won't see WmA anytime
soon. The Devs are intelectually opposed to DRM or any other propriatory
Koddex.

One thing I don't like about my model is that it is something called MTP or
media transfer protocol. So, it doesn't normally show up as a storage
device in windows without a little trick. This means I normally would need
to use Windows Media Player or another media player that supports
synchronization to get music on the player. I have been messing around with
WMP for days trying to move tracks on to the player with lousy results. I
just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I do know that Jaws doesn't see the
synchronize dialog very well.

* I can only assume that your trying to sink WMA and or DRM Plays for sure
right? I'm really shocked that the unit won't show up as an additional
drive letter under my computer. Are you running XP? If so, you don't need
to install the accompanying software that came with your player. I have an
Iriver IHP-140 running rockbox and it's simpkle copy and paste.

Let us know how it turns out...Keith

I knew I'd loose DRM but didn't realize I'd also loose wma. Darn! Thanks
 Keith.

I'm not sure I'm going to keep this unit. Don't really think It would be
 to
sturdy with the hd. I don't think I want to keep it in a pocket as the
screen is exposed, even in the case. Also, the headphone jack stick out
 on
the top where it could easily get bent. Also don't like the method of
navigation, even with Rockbox. I have already had some glitches in files
I've copied to the player that aren't on the original files. This is a
refurbished unit so maybe the HD has some bad sectors.

one thing that really helps is. if you're using utorrent, and jaws, go
 into
the jaws config and tell it to use msaa to read stuff. it will make
 things
 more understandable.

it should auto configure that kind of stuff when you install it.
have you uninstalled the bit torrent client?
it may be using that port.

 Hey Simon,

Got it! But it says that the port that it needs to use isn't open.
 I'm
going into some muddy territory for me here. How do you open and map
 ports?
The exact number it wants to use is 23474. Also it has something for
 the
upload and download speeds and judging from the test I ran the
 results
 came
back that I normally run anywhere between 384 k for uploads and 512 k
 for
downloads. Don't quite get all of this just yet.

 Hey Simon,

Thanks, I've been messing with this bit torrent thing for the last
 2
 days
and couldn't figure out what the deal with this program is. It
 shouldn't
take a rocket scientist to figure how ta use it. The minute it
 does,

 on
a site called btjunkie.com just last night. think I'll give that a
 shot.

 Hi yall,

I'm trying to figure out how to use the bit torrent client.
 Everything
seems to be in order in terms of the installation, the UPNP and
 port
settings; however, whenever I try to download a torrent I get the
following error message. Bit torrent error dialog aborting the
 torrent
because it couldn't connect to the tracker while not connected to

Re: Edirol R-09

2006-11-09 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there,

Well, I got my Edirol yesterday and began familiarizing myself with it last
night.
I have to be honest and say that it took a little bit to find things, since
I had no idea how to hold it or what buttons did what. By accident, I
discovered the place where one puts in the card and USB plug and even the
batteries.

However, I'm wondering if someone can go through and briefly tell me a bit
of the layout and how it should be held and used.

For instance, where is the on/off button, and how do I know that it's on or
not?

I tried accessing the podcasts last night, but it kept telling me that too
many people were on the website and the podcasts weren't accessible.
What is the best podcast to start with, or is it possible for someone to let
me know of a recording or an indepth explanation of getting started with
this thing?

I'd like to actually record something happening tomorrow, and want to be
able to use it soon. I'll keep playing with it, but I don't want to mess up
settings just yet.

So, how do I get started without a reader or person helping me here?

I'd start with the links to Edirol R09 In Depth Review and then Edirol

The first describes the unit physically and the second the menus.

 Hi Jim,

 Go to http://www.blindcooltech.com/
And look for Edirol. There are several podcasts that deal with the
 Edirol.
I'd start with the links to Edirol R09 In Depth Review and then
 Edirol
 R09
 Menus.
The first describes the unit physically and the second the menus.

 Hi there,

Well, I got my Edirol yesterday and began familiarizing myself with
 it last night.
I have to be honest and say that it took a little bit to find things,
since I had no idea how to hold it or what buttons did what. By
accident, I discovered the place where one puts in the card and USB
 plug and even the batteries.

However, I'm wondering if someone can go through and briefly tell me
a bit of the layout and how it should be held and used.

For instance, where is the on/off button, and how do I know that it's
 on or not?

I tried accessing the podcasts last night, but it kept telling me
that too many people were on the website and the podcasts weren't
 accessible.
What is the best podcast to start with, or is it possible for someone
to let me know of a recording or an indepth explanation of getting
 started with this thing?

I'd like to actually record something happening tomorrow, and want to
be able to use it soon. I'll keep playing with it, but I don't want
to mess up settings just yet.

So, how do I get started without a reader or person helping me here?

 Jim

Listening to a stream, a few questions

2006-11-09 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
Any ideas of a simple program I can use for listening to a stream, but one
that will constantly try and re-connect to the stream should it buffer a
bit?
We need to relay a stream on to one of the local TV channels on cable access
and need a program that will try and re-connect should the stream hick up at
all.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jed

2006-11-09 Thread Lois Goodine
In Winamp, go to Preferences and check all formats you want Winamp to play.
Then go into your other players and uncheck what you want only Winamp to do.
Also, if you want a particular drive to open and play music CD's with
winamp, you can program the drive to do that.

Re: Making Winamp Default Player?

2006-11-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi
Let me clarify this just a bit since the last message was a bit
brief. If you have no other audio players installed on your system
with the exception of Windows Media player which comes with XP,
installing Winamp *should* make it the default player for all its
file types. if this is not the case then do the following.

1. Press control p for the preferences.

2. in the tree view, press your home key and then arrow down to file types.

3. tab over and you will see a list of several file types. If you
tab again, you will hear associated file types all button. Press the
space bar on that.
This will make Winamp play all of its supported file types, making
Winamp your default audio player.
4. press your tab key until you hear, close button and press the
space bar. That's it.

Of course, if you encounter a file type that Winamp will not
recognize, then another player you may have may come up. It is
possible to make Winamp play more file types than it initially
supports, but this requires the instalation of plugins, which you
probably don't want to do. But that's the easiest way of doing this.

Hope this helps.

There are some issues with the JAWS scripts at this time. Additionally, MSAA
support for the tab controls in Skype has been broken, and this is scheduled
to be fixed during the beta cycle.

2006-11-09 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Well I guess it depends on how you define a while but given that the Skype
3 beta only came out yesterday I suspect you were using the 2.6 beta, which
does indeed work well.
