Hi everyone. I've noticed that a few people on this list have reverted
to Windows Media 10 after switching to Windows Media 11. So I'm
 wondering...
does anyone out there see an advantage to Windows Media 11? If so, what
 is
it? Is its sound improved? Does 11 do anything that 10 can't do? Just
wondering because I've heard very few positives so far.

 Thanks.

From what I can gather, you cannot record each channel individually as
separate recordings.

RE: New Sony Sound Forge 9: Special Upgrade Offer

2007-04-10 Thread Bruce Toews
Gold Wave can handle some file conversions that Sound Forge cannot. This
is the one technical aspect where Gold Wave is better. There are a few
technical aspects where Sound forge is better. There are many who prefer
Sound Forge's interface to Gold Waves, while others, like me, prefer Gold
Wave's interface over sound Forge's. The bottom line is this, though.
While Sound Forge is approximately seven times the price of Gold Wave,
plus the cost of upgrading Sound Forge periodically, it is not in any way
seven times better as a sound editor, not even close. One can do a very
professional job with Gold Wave. With the exception of some of the special
effects that Sound Forge offers, editing can be done just as finely and
just as professionally with either program.

GoldWave and Sound Forge Issue

2007-04-10 Thread Tom
There were a couple messages posted to the list and a few
messages sent to me personally about discussing GoldWave and
Sound Forge on pc audio. I have no problem discussing each
or both programs. A recent message sent to the list by Bruce
is an excellent example of how discussion should be
conducted. It's when the discussion becomes personal that I
think it has been taken too far. Personal messages just
cause people to get angry and post angry messages. So,
discuss any pc audio issue till your heart's are content.
Just be civil.

The MLB Issue

2007-04-10 Thread Tom
Now, the MLB issue that I have received a few messages about
too. I have no problem with the MLB site being discussed on
the list. It is, afterall, listening to audio on a computer.
As a result of the MLB discussion some people were able to
work out the problems they had accessing the audio on that
site. Even though I'm not interested in MLB I am grateful to
those who took the time to post answers to questions and
detailed instructions that apparently helped a lot.
Unfortunately, as I followed the thread, there is one or
maybe two people who are still having trouble and it would be
OK with me for that discussion to continue if any additional
helpful information could be given.

Thanks,

Re: wmp 11 menu trouble

2007-04-10 Thread David Bailes
Hi,

So far, I can get around the player fairly well. I
just have one stupid
problem. It's the menu bar. No matter whether I
turn on classic menus or
not, the menu bar gets focus and I can't tab around
the main interface.

neither alt or esc leaves the classic menus - it's
best to use the new style popup menu. To leave the
popup menu use esc. Also there's a bug when you first
open the new style popup menu after logging in: all
the keystrokes to navigate around the window stop
working. To work round this, press ALT + TAB which
closes the menu, and then press alt to open the menu
again.

And, I can't
figure out how to select different albums when I
select an artist in the
play list

It's not as friendly as wmp 10. If you list by artist
in the library tree, move to the primary list view and
choose an artist, then the songs are grouped by album,
but I don't think Jaws reads the album titles. An
alternative is to select the album view in the Library
tree, go to the search box (ctrl + e), type in the
artists name (or first few letters), press down arrow,
and you're at the top of the list of albums in the
primary list view. (the above search actually matches
to text in any of the columns - if you want to ensure
it only matches to an artist, type eg, artist:bono.

David Bailes.

Jana,

Look for the following lines in your jfw.ini file:

[Synthesizers]

Synth1Name=eloq

Synth1LongName=Eloquence Software

Synth1Driver=eloq

directly below these lines, you must add a line similar to the following:

Synth1Port=C-Media Wave Device

BUT, instead of C-Media Wave Device, you must substitute the exact name of
the sound card you wish JAWS/Eloquence to use. There must be no space on
either side of the equals sign, and the spelling and case of the name of the
sound card you wish to use must be exactly the same as appears on the Audio
Devices page of the Sound and Audio Devices dialogue in Control Panel.

After you have made this change to jfw.ini, exit and restart JAWS.
eloquence will thence forward be forced to use the named sound card, even if
you have USB devices plugged in, which steal away the default output device
assignment.

Good luck. Let me know off list if you have any difficulty folowing these
directions.

When you plug in your USB headset, it makes itself the default output
device. With the headset plugged in, go to control Panel, Sound and
Audio
Devices, the Audio Device tab, and manually reset your default audio
output device to the sound card driving your speakers.

If you are using JAWS, you will need to edit jfw.ini, to ensure that,

Re: sf plugins - was - Re: Fw: New Sony Sound Forge 9: SpecialUpgradeOffer

2007-04-10 Thread Marijan Janev
Hi Anders,

You can get the best results using goldwave noise reduction if, firstly, you
select a part of the file which contains only the noise you'd like to
reduce, then copy the selection to clipboard, and then open the GW noise
reduction dialog box. Now you should choose from clipboard, an you can
scale various values and accept the right one you think that is adequat for
you.

But, the results are far away from those you can get using SF noise
reduction plug in, unfortunately.

Nope you can not.

restoration plugins except some fairly expensive things for profesionals.
I haven found out how to make the GOldwave noise reduction works.
ANd how to get the best results out of it.

another GameDay Audio shortcut

2007-04-10 Thread Dean Martineau
Last week i gave instructions for how to access GameDay audio, then I
figured something out. when you access the multimedia site, choose a
game and press enter. this opens up the media player, but you won't
have sound yet because you're not signed in. Here's the new part:
turn off browse or msaa mode, shift-ctrl-a for window-Eyes, Insert-z
for JAWS. You are immediately placed in the box for your e-mail
address. Tab to the password field, tab twice more and hit enter and
you're signed in and sound should begin.

They have. When you install SF9 it is installed after the main Sound Forge

It is version 2.0E. It is invoked from the Tools menu of SF9.

Re: mp3 converter?

2007-04-10 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Brandon.

I can't recommend a converter that will do that but I can recommend a
program that will allow you to search your music collection based on
bitrate, automatically create a list and copy that list to another folder so
that you can then run the conversion using goldwave or whatever converter
you currently use before copying back and replacing those larger files.

The program is called audigen from red chair software. It's a bargain at
under $20 if I remember correctly and the best program I ever bought.

Regards.

 Hi all,
Has anyone ever run into a music converter that can convert by bitrate?
What I mean is one I can load a folder into and define which files I
want converted. Say for example I wanted to have all files with a
bitrate greater than 192 kbps converted down to save some space.
Normally, I'd either have to go through all the files and find the ones
that were over, or just reconvert them all and get lower quality files
taking up more space, defeating the whole purpose.
If anyone can recommend a program, please drop me a message.
 Thanks,
 Brandon

RE: Sound Forge 9 accessibility

I have them and will be testing them soon with Version 9. I had a heck of a
time getting SF9 to even load due to ASIO driver problems with my three
sound cards (don't even ask LOLOL). I will report back on the list with
what I find.

(the above search actually matches
to text in any of the columns - if you want to ensure
it only matches to an artist, type eg, artist:bono.

for everybody that can use the windows media for volume control here are
some other keystrokes that might be of use as well.
these only work while listening to an archived game.
  faster playback is control+shift+g
  slower playback is control+shift+s
  normal playback is control+shift+n
here is the greatest ones. when listening to archived games
  control+shift+f is fast forward.
  control+shift+b is rewind.

Hi Anders!
I know what you mean with those signs on the keyboard; I don't have brackets
as default keys on my Czech layout at all so one way I generate them is
pressing right alt + f for the left bracket and right alt + g for the right
one; another option would be pressing left alt plus their respective ASCII
codes on your numeric keyboard so it's 91 for the left one and 93 for the
right one. So just try it out and see if at least one of the options works
for you. Sorry, no easier way; LOL!

Re: USB headset

2007-04-10 Thread Dana S. Leslie
If you configure skype as I suggest, you will hear the person you are talking
to on skype ONLY through your headset. But you can STILL hear skype ring
through the speaker in your mother board, the one through which you hear the
beep when you reboot, not the desktop speakers you probably also have.

But none of that has anything to do with how I suggest you edit jfw.ini. The
edit to jfw.ini only forces JAWS/Eloquence to speak through the soundcard
driving your desktop speakers, rather than through your headset, even after a
reboot, which is what it will do if you have the headset plugged in when you
reboot.

Hi,
What do you mean when you say popup menu? I also have the menubar problem,
but intermittently. For the most part, I can
navigate using WMP 11 the same as version 10.
Howeever, I've yet to figure out how to select tracks for ripping - I just
cut and paste them from My Music Folders onto the cd drive and select burn
to CD option and usually no problems from that point on.
I did for awhile have the same problem with CDs stopping 2/3 through the
burn process, but I've since cleaned the lense via a disc with tiny brush to
wipe over the lense as well as blowing out my entire unit...

Best Regards,

Subject: Re: wmp 11 menu trouble

Re: mp3 converter?

2007-04-10 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the name of the program. I'll give it a try if I can keep my
stupid internet connection up long enough to get it sorted.
Thanks
Brandon

Overdubbing delay, volume control more

2007-04-10 Thread Billy Ray Legendary
Hey, Guys!

Okay, I understand the whole thing about why there is a delay between
the input signal that you are recording (overdubbing) and the playback audio
that you are listening to, but am clueless as to how to compensate for it.

At first, I thought I could make an adjustment in the Windows volume
control, but am finding that I can either: 1) record from either my sound
card input, or my microphone,, but can only listen from my sound card
output. In my 2 inch tape days, we could listen from the record head, so
this was not a problem, but in the digital world, there seems to be
something that I am not understanding.

Is this a shortcoming of my RealTek sound card? Is it a setting found
in my N-Track recording program? Is it indeed a Windows volume control
issue?

One point of interest... I used to be able to do this in Audacity, but
cannot do it anymore, which leads me to believe that I have changed
something affecting this feature in every recording program. Any ideas?
Does anyone mind going through the painstaking task of telling me exactly
how it should be configured, or where I can find such instructions?

Thanks!

Billy

Itunes files in Windows Media Player

2007-04-10 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi
Is it possible to play Itunes purchased mp4s copyright protected in Windows
Media Player. Is there some plug in to make this possible. I realise there may
be a copyright issue but can they be converted to make them more accessible on
other mp3 machines - especially when they're your own legal purchases. I'm
trying to avoid any further degradation of sound by burning them to CD then
converting them back into mp3s.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: sf noise reduction

2007-04-10 Thread David Tanner
Well, I'm strictly guessing, but considering that the noise reduction plug-in
is version 2.0B then my guess is that the SF Noise Reduction 2.0 is probably
the same bird.
