Which High Quality portable recorder should I get?

2007-06-30 Thread Damon
Hi.

I'm wanting to be able to make high quality recordings for broadcast and the
web.

I believe the way forward these days is to get a solid state recording
device, is that right? I'm assuming we're talking about recorders that
enable you to record onto a Flash card. Or something like that.

Can anyone suggest a good model to purchase? And, of course, anything more
accessible with lots of buttons rather than menus is best.

What are people on this list using or salivating over right now?

Thanks v much

buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Hi listers,

It looks like my Lite-On drive of a bit over three years is on the
fritz. I have tried running a cd cleaner from memorex through the
thing a number of times, but no major improvement if any when it
comes to the consistent reading of cds, so I'm going to buy another
drive. Since the trend has gone to dvd drives, I am a bit concerned
as to what I should be on the look out for as it concerns working
with my version of Nero 6. I don't want to get home with a drive,
only to find out that it will not be compatible with my burning
software. And, I really like Nero, but don't really want to have to
invest another 80 bucks or so for an upgrade. After all, that price
may be twice that of the driver unit. Anyway, if anybody can shed any
helpful light on my above stated concerns, I will be eternally grateful.

Now, I doubt that I will be watching any movies with this new drive.
I'm only planning to maybe back up files to a dvd disc on occasion,
but there's always that eventuality. Is there a drive that will work
well with both standards, and how much should such a drive set me back?

Oh well, guess that's it. If anybody can come up with any possible
concerns that I should be aware of in making such a switch, please let me know.

Thanks,

Larry

I use an Ederol R09 recorder which records onto a 16 MB card, although you
can get 1 GB or 2 GB cards. I believe they cost about $200.

Accessability of Skype 3.2; Skylook; and available scrips for bothos

Linerec and what should I do with it

2007-06-30 Thread JardataMailServicesBox
Hello List!

I am using Winamp 35 Pro and the Sam Winamp encoder (older version) and have an
internet stream station that is on from time to time. I can play music fine,
but I want to do some talking too. I hear that some ACB Radio people use the
Linerec Plug-in to talk. I recently downloaded that plug-in and installed it
into the Winamp Plug-ins folder; then I fired up my station and tried to do a
little talking after playing a song or two, but nothing happened and it asked
me for a URL; I thought I was supposed to be able to talk and it would be
recorded through the Sam Winamp Encoder just like the music. Could someone
tell me what is suppose to happen when I invoke the Linerec plug-in. Am I
suppose to have that dll line in my playlist before this happens. I just fired
up the server, invoked the play folder, clicked on ok and music played. I saw
something about putting a dll line in the playlist. Should I have done this
with an m3u folder or something? I just play from my mp23 folders on my
system. Should I be using the winamp play list or create an mp3 folder? Help
is needed and appreciated.

Once I get this figured out, please tell me how to talk; go through the steps
from starting winamp and the encoder to playing songs and talking. that would
do the trick for me.

Again, thanks.

Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Larry.

You may already know, but if you're buying a new DVD drive, or a CD drive
for that matter, it's highly likely that you'll at least need to update your
nero software. Updates are different to upgrades in that they are free and
generally just provide bug fixes, support for new drives and some small
enhancements. I think the latest version is 6.6.1.15 which was released in
March this year.

Regards.

High Larry,
Any cd or DVD drive you get comes with software.
Most of them that I know about comes with Nero, but some may come with
Roxyo.
They will set you back some where between $50 to $70.
But it all depends on the brand and mottle.
My best regards to you all!

Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Hey John, thanks for the tip. Hopefully I can manage to get a good
deal on a drive minus the software, but guess we'll see. I would
think that the OEM edition you might get with a drive would lack some
of the features of the off the shelf edition of the program. Thing
is, I make absolutely no use of any of the bloatware you get with
Nero, not even the audio editing application, because it doesn't seem
to have any keyboard shortcuts. I'm speaking of Nero Ultra edition.
Good software for it's primary purpose, but the add-ons are
completely unnecessary as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, think I'll hit the Nero site, and look for the latest update
so at least I'll be prepared.

Thanks a bunch,

Larry

Certain parts of the Nero 7 are accessible, if you can figure out how the list
work to select the different programs within Nero. the player is not accessible
at
all, you cant move to the proper window to access the functions. if a sighted
person moves the mouse for you, then things become accessible.

Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Thanks Kevin for that info. I just downloaded the latest update, and
attempted to install, but am a little unsure about how to get the
serial number without digging up the cd, and my sited wife isn't home
right now to read the thing off the disc anyway. I was thinking it
might be available within Nero, but when I press the option to enter
my serial number, all I get is the Start Smart thing, and maybe the
number is listed there somewhere, but I really can't be sure, so
guess I'd better wait till she gets home. Oh well, not really in any
kind of a hurry I guess g. Don't think I'll be replacing the drive today.

Thanks again,

Larry

Subject: buying a new cd drive, some questions

If anybody can come up with any possible
concerns that I should be aware of in making such a switch, please let me
  know.

  Thanks,

  Larry

Re: Which High Quality portable recorder should I get?

2007-06-30 Thread Michael Lang
I'd buy the Plextalk PTR2 or the new Sony ICD-SX57 or 67. The Plextalk
is the most accessible, because it's made for blind people. The Sony
records in a propriatary format called LPEC, but it's easy to convert
the files to Wave or MP3 with the supplied software. With this
software, the Digital Voice Editor, one can also set the menu of the
recorder. This works well with a screen reader like JAWS. The Sony is
a voice recorder, but one can set it to manual record level control
with or without limiter. Like many other voice recorders, it emits
different beep tones in different situations, which makes the thing
more fun to use than an Edirol for instance. It also has a built-in
speaker. I have my ICD-SX67 since Friday and I haven't heard any
artifacts, when I use the best quality setting LPEC 128 KBPS. One can
also do line-in recordings with the Sony.

I'd not use the PTR2's MP3 encoding when recording, 256 KBPS is
acceptable, but I'd use PCm Wave in most situations. The Encoder of
the Edirol is a bit better IMHO. However, the preamp of the Edirol is
a bit noisy, it's not so good, when recording in quiet situations.
The preamp of the PTR2 is fine.

Re: Which High Quality portable recorder should I get?

2007-06-30 Thread Michael Lang
Hi Rick, you wrote:

Hi Michael, do you prefer this new Sony over the Olympus ds50 and if so,

They both have their advantages and disadvantages: The Olympus offers
talking menus, which makes working with it easy. One can precisely jump
to specific times in a file by using the time navigation feature. The
Sony is for people, who'd like to have more high quality features like
manual recording level and line-in recording. It is a really nice
recorder for radio broadcasts, because of its line-in recording
facility. There is a resistor cable for the Olympus, which attanuates
the line-in signal, so that it doesn't get distorted, when it is
reamplified by the mic preamp, but this reamplification always adds
some noise to the signal. The mic input of the Sony can easily be
switched to line-in. Whenever one connects the recorder to something
via the mic-in, it asks, whether the socket should be used as a mic
input or line input. It remembers the last setting, so if one always
uses it as a line input, one just presses the play / enter key. It's
really interesting to compare the two and I could go on for some time
I guess, but all in all I'd say, that the Olympus is easier to use,
uses a not so propriatary format and has great time navigation
features, while the Sony offers more high quality options.
