Thanks! I'll have to do that! But if I were to get Nero 8, what features

I wondered if you had administrator rights with that computer, is all. I
don't know maybe if Nero can't update the 1.mp3, 2.mp3 etc. to other
content, it might be the reason, or, in configuration there might be an
 option, I don't have Nero 8.

Re: serado.

2008-03-01 Thread GianniP46
The output comes from the serato hardware (sl1). You don't need two
soundcards. You do need a way of hearing jaws though wile D.JIng. I put the
laptops audio output for Jaws on another channel on my mixer. I think that I
would share the scripts, but nothing is documented. Do you know how to script

one more question, does the audio output come from the cd player? or the

Yes, I am using versions 1.7 and recently 1.8 for about 6 months or so.
There is a bad bug with jaws 9 locking up when you play a file because of
a wave form window that appears in Serato's software called Scratchlive.
I have spoken to FS about this and they really haven't been helpful. It
works ok with Jaws8 though. There are some focus issues in jaws 8 that
you have to get use to though. I have some scripts and HSC files that
make things easier. Nothing is documented though.

FOobar2000 is an accessible and rather efficient audio player. It works by
using mainly standard controlls, though there is one querk in the latest
versions, that in order to go between the playlist tabs, you have to
controll tab while hovering on the tab controll, not from anywhere, and you
can't arrow left and right. However, it works well, and I like using it for
 some things.

Electronica software options

2008-03-01 Thread ari
Hi all,
A quick intro, I'm Ari, a totally blind, jaws-using, uni student from South
Africa.
My question is this: sighted persons can use software like Acid and EJ where
they can make layers and sequences of music, add different beat styles, add
built-in instrumental stuff and add robotic voices and such, which are
included with these software, but none of these work with JAWS. I want to
know, coming from a totally non-music background, but keen to learn, what
options I have of making sort of dance, electronica, electropop and techno
music with robotic stuff. When I look at music offerings, the only thing
that seems to be available that is accessible is CakeWalk, but this seems
more for classical or slower stuff and it also seems as if you need a music
background and you have to connect instruments to your pc and play them
yourself, it does not have built-in stuff, plus it does cost a lot, and I'd
like to try and make stuff before I buy. I am a total amateur at this also,
as I have also heard of things called synthesizers and mixers, but I have no
idea what they even do. The tracks I'd like to end up creating are tracks
something like Kate Nash's Caroline's A Victim, it's a fast dance beat, it's
her voice singing over the top, but her voice is somehow robotically
modified, or music such as what Kraftwerk do.
Sorry, I know this post seems awfully confused, but I just am not sure how
to get started in making electronica music.
Thanks
Ari

 Subject: Nero

  Hello all

I am a new member to the list and a recent user of Nero and ripping
generally. Presently I am using Nero 8

I am aware that when tracks are ripped and saved to the hard disk
 the
track titles can be drawn down from the net. As long as Nero is
 running
these track names are available and read when the files are
 viewed in
Windows Explorer. However, when Nero is unloaded the track names
 revert
back to 01.mp3 02.mp3 etc. Is there a way within Nero of
 automatically
changing the actual file names to the track titles or does this
 have to be
done manually to each track using normal editing techniques.

Any help will be much appreciated.

 Peter Bentley

I have looked at John Wilson's tutorial but it does not seem to
 cover this
 but I may be mistaken.

 Any help much appreciated.

Re: sound editing?

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
I love that sort of question as everyone is bound to have a different
opinion smile and (in my opinion) there is no best audio editing
software solution on the market just as there is and never will be a
perfect cassette recorder on the market, each package has its
advantages and disadvantages and I'll give you my opinion for what its
worth and I'm sure it will open up many lines of discussions.
You mention Sound Forge? Yes, that's not a bad package but my
annoyance with Sound Forge is that its one of those packages that
tries to be everything to everyone so in the process you find many
areas which have been comprimised. Its been my experience for instance
that if you record in Sound Forge and you look at the markers log,
you'll see that Sound Forge notes many minor gaps in the recording and
in my view that's just not good enough for a so-called professional
piece of software so given that I found myself using Sound Forge
exclusively for editing purposes and then doing the recording job with
Total recorder. As a footnote to this however, I found that most of
the stuff I recorded with Total Recorder were easily edited anyway
with that package so in the end? Well for what I was doing Sound Forge
had turned out to be a massive waste of money and I thus never
bothered to upgrade from Version 8 to Version 9, that was all of
course before the Mac came along and changed everything when it came
to audio editors and I'll mention this here again because for those
who are starting out with audio editing could be in for some very
pleasant and cheap surprises.
I have 3 different audio editors for the Mac, why 3 you ask? Well put
simply, these editors were dirt cheap, each has advantages and
disadvantages over each so it was worthwhile it appears to buy all 3
to see what each offered. My favourite thus far is fast becoming
Amadeus Pro which I bought a couple of weeks ago for $40.00 and it
appears to be the most accessible editor for the Mac I've seen yet. I
won't go into everything that Amadeus Pro offers as we'd be here all
night if I listed everything but I'll tell you a few things to wet the
appetite. first and foremost, it has many ways and means to move and
manipulate audio data. Next you have full control of multi track
editing. Then, you have the built-in audio noise reduction stuff.
Finally, the world is your oyster, not only can Amadeus Pro use its
own extensive range of plug-ins, you can download extra plug-ins from
the net or use those which come with Apple's Operating System Leopard.
So their's my opinion again, for what its worth smile.

Are earlier versions more usable? I've read something regarding a screen

Also wonder could anyone give me a list of the basic keyboard shortcuts for

Many thanks,

FOobar2000 is an accessible and rather efficient audio player. It works
 by
using mainly standard controlls, though there is one querk in the latest
versions, that in order to go between the playlist tabs, you have to
controll tab while hovering on the tab controll, not from anywhere, and
 you
can't arrow left and right. However, it works well, and I like using it
 for
 some things.

Hi Everyone!
I wen't up on to http://www.highcriteria.com to see what the status
was with Total Recorder, its been a rather long time between drinks
it seems since version 6.2 was released so I was wondering whether
Version 7 had shown its head yet, obviously not!
We discussed on list some of the new features that High Criteria were
talking about for Total recorder v7 and I'll be quite frank with you
all, the day V7 is released won't be a day too soon as some of the
features (such as Time Shifting) will be worth the upgrade cost. Does
anyone have any information as to when v7 may be released? From what I
gathered in our last discussion on this, High Criteria were
experiencing some problems with Total Recorder v6 and Windows Vista,
that's not big news to my ears of course, who isn't experiencing
problems with Vista smile that would be more news worthy but I'm
rambling smile.

Its not meant for tasks like that, Total Recorder is meant to record
audio onto your computer and along with that, it has some editing
capabilities and various add-ins are available though to the best of
my knowledge, what you want to do won't be handled by Total Recorder,
rather something like Sonar.

Subject: Total Recorder, any more news about Version 7?

Subject: Re: sound editing?

Re: easy cdda extractor 10?

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok well thanks for that I'll try that here however the advise I'm
getting from people with sight is that they cannot even navigate this
combo box either, I know that I (and others) cannot navigate the
computers folder tree as we used to and (the fact that sighted people
don't seem to be able to navigate it either) points to a bit of a
problem.
Its all very well typing in your address and that's easy enough done
if you know the exact path to where you want your output but what if
you don't?

Total Recorder, any more news about Version 7?

We discussed on list some of the new features that High Criteria were

features (such as Time Shifting) will be worth the upgrade cost. Does

Sansa E250 seems to have been completely corrupted

2008-03-01 Thread Ann
Hi folks,

If this is off topic, please feel free to reply to me off list at:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

My nephew has a Sansa E250 MP3 player, and recently, one by one, folder
by folder, everything has seemed to disappear off of his player. Some of
it can still be seen from the computer, but much of the filenames appear
to be corrupted. We tried to format the device, and got a message saying
formatting could not be completed. When we try to copy MP3 files to the
player, it says either the file does not exist or is being used by
another program, neither of which is true.

Could his player be corrupted beyond repair? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: sound editing?

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yes, I've heard a lot about Goldwave but never tried it yet, ah well
it won't do any harm to add it to the editor collection. The Sound
Forge manual is a monster, when I last looked at it I think it was
about 400 pages or more, anyone digested each and every page of it
yet? I was considerably impressed with Wavepad too, been a while since
I looked at it but I don't think it was too badly priced either.
Audasity should be worthwile investigating too if features available
in 1.35 beta make it to the next official version.

On 02/03/2008, at 5:00 AM, Larry N wrote:

GoldWave, Sound Forge 8, DC 6 and WavePad. If you are asking about
 simple
ease of use, accessibility and a manual that is easy to understand
 and set
up in a way that can be accessed quickly, then GoldWave wins hands
 down.
However, there are tasks that DC6 performs better than any piece of
 software
that I've ever used. For instance, it has excellent hiss reduction and
comprehensive noise reduction. The down side is that its manual is
 difficult
 to use with speech.

And Sound Forge? I truly feel that I get less out of it than I
 probably
should, simply due to a lack of understanding. For instance, Sound
 Forge
works with editable files which are made into and edited from what the
program calls regions. What is a region? I'm not exactly sure, nor
 am I
certain how to go about creating one or editing the thing with
 keyboard
alone. Perhaps it is my own inability to understand, but none of the
 Sound
Forge faithful have been able to show me why this program is worth
 its hefty
price tag. I would still love to know how to take a recorded file,
 such as
that generated by a vinyl LP and edit out pops clicks and extraneous
 noise,
then burn it onto a CD using Sound Forge only. Others in this group
 can do
so, however I have not succeeded as yet.

Meanwhile, with the exception of actually burning the CD, I can edit a
project from start to finish using either GoldWave or DC6,

To be entirely fair, I can perform some tasks more quickly while
 using Sound
Forge. It's equalizer is superior. Its general audio restoration
 feature
works quickly and for the most part reliably when applied to an
 entire file.
But I don't find the manual easy to use, so I'm sure I'm not getting
 the
 most from the program.

As for WavePad, that hasn't been discussed much here. I own a copy,
 but to
be honest, I haven't played with it a great deal as yet.

Others will have their own ideas, but if I were buying my first
 audio editor
which could take me far beyond the beginner stage, I would choose
 GoldWave.

Hope this helps you in some small way.

Re: Ripping from Nero

Ok, well truly I don't know why Nero isn't writing file names from mp3s you
are ripping from if the names inside the CDs are ok. It probably will be ok
since if you're creating a CD, it uses that information to textually label
the cd so it shows up in the player window.

I wondered if you had administrator rights with that computer, is all. I
don't know maybe if Nero can't update the 1.mp3, 2.mp3 etc. to other
content, it might be the reason, or, in configuration there might be an
 option, I don't have Nero 8.

Please excuse the second re-post. There has been no response so does this
mean that the answer to my question is no or that nobody knows the
 answer.
 I
would be very grateful for any information. The question is pasted below.

I am aware that when tracks are ripped and saved to the hard disk the
 track
titles can be drawn down from the net. As long as Nero is running these
 track
names are available and read when the files are viewed in Windows
 Explorer.
However, when Nero is unloaded the track names revert back to 01.mp3
 02.mp3
etc. Is there a way within Nero of automatically changing the actual file
names to the track titles or does this have to be done manually to each
 track
 using normal editing techniques.

 Peter Bentley

Re: sound editing?

2008-03-01 Thread Bruce Toews
Gold Wave's manual is very well-written, and the author has bent over
backwards over the past year to add more accessibility features. He even
added scrubbing, a feature whose usefulness I'll never appreciate but
which seems to be deeply engrained in the hearts of many as
un-live-withoutable.

Ok, well I'm very impressed with this editing package and in a lot of
ways I believe Goldwave to be more functional and practical than Sound
Forge ever was or probably is ever likely to be, the layout of the
manual is very well done and easy to get around.
I went to the site at http://www.goldwave.com but I couldn't find a

Goldwave INC won't take paypal damn! but if its a fair price then
I'll save to purchase this.

Re: Sansa E250 seems to have been completely corrupted

2008-03-01 Thread Valiant8086 (on laptop)
Hi.
Is it just the sansa's firmware or do they have rockbox installed. Anyway,
it is possible that the sansa itself is the other program that's using the
files. You may be able to fix the corruption problem by resetting the sansa.
I'm not sure how to do that. It's something tricky like hold down the record
button whilst you turn the thing off then back on but that's likely not
exactly right. I had one of those for like a week. You'll loose everything
stored on the sansa at least by doing the reset I'm talking about which is
the point. Maybe the sansa would call it formatting it. Unfortunately I
can't give specific instructions but I'm pretty sure it's something that may
work.

Any ideas?

 Thanks.

Re: Total Recorder, any more news about Version 7?

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, what I mean is, suppose you schedule a recording or start Total
recording manually and you want to play back what you've recorded?
Well normally you'd have to stop Total Recorder from recording and
then play the recording back? Time shifting means that you can start
the recording and after a preset time (say a number of seconds) you
can play back what's been recorded whilst the recording itself
continues, pause the playback if a phone call comes in for example and
the recording keeps going so you can resume from exactly where you
paused, does this make any sense?
This sort of feature is common place on video recording devices these
days.

Re: sound editing?

2008-03-01 Thread Larry N
Hi Billy. Interesting question. I have 4 sound editors onboard. There's
GoldWave, Sound Forge 8, DC 6 and WavePad. If you are asking about simple
ease of use, accessibility and a manual that is easy to understand and set
up in a way that can be accessed quickly, then GoldWave wins hands down.
However, there are tasks that DC6 performs better than any piece of software
that I've ever used. For instance, it has excellent hiss reduction and
comprehensive noise reduction. The down side is that its manual is difficult
to use with speech.

And Sound Forge? I truly feel that I get less out of it than I probably
should, simply due to a lack of understanding. For instance, Sound Forge
works with editable files which are made into and edited from what the
program calls regions. What is a region? I'm not exactly sure, nor am I
certain how to go about creating one or editing the thing with keyboard
alone. Perhaps it is my own inability to understand, but none of the Sound
Forge faithful have been able to show me why this program is worth its hefty
price tag. I would still love to know how to take a recorded file, such as
that generated by a vinyl LP and edit out pops clicks and extraneous noise,
then burn it onto a CD using Sound Forge only. Others in this group can do
so, however I have not succeeded as yet.

Meanwhile, with the exception of actually burning the CD, I can edit a
project from start to finish using either GoldWave or DC6,

To be entirely fair, I can perform some tasks more quickly while using Sound
Forge. It's equalizer is superior. Its general audio restoration feature
works quickly and for the most part reliably when applied to an entire file.
But I don't find the manual easy to use, so I'm sure I'm not getting the
most from the program.

As for WavePad, that hasn't been discussed much here. I own a copy, but to
be honest, I haven't played with it a great deal as yet.

Others will have their own ideas, but if I were buying my first audio editor
which could take me far beyond the beginner stage, I would choose GoldWave.

Hope this helps you in some small way.

Larry

You're right. That's probably one of the reasons why I use it so much. As
for scrubbing, I'm not even sure what scrubbing is. Can you enlighten?

Gold Wave's manual is very well-written, and the author has bent over
backwards over the past year to add more accessibility features. He even
added scrubbing, a feature whose usefulness I'll never appreciate but
which seems to be deeply engrained in the hearts of many as
 un-live-withoutable.

Hi Billy. Interesting question. I have 4 sound editors onboard.
 There's
GoldWave, Sound Forge 8, DC 6 and WavePad.

To be entirely fair, I can perform some tasks more quickly while
 using Sound

Keyboard shortcuts for Napster

2008-03-01 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi
I've recently joined Napster. The screen is fairly accessible but I don't know
how to control the playing of the music by using the keys. Once I start a track
I've to wait till it stops itself.
Can anyone give shortcuts to help with this process? (I can't find navigation
shortcuts in the manual but perhaps I've not looked deeply enough.)

This is a device to connect into PC to play and convert music tapes into

I tried converting the mp3 file into WMA yet, it made no difference.

Ok, well I'm very impressed with this editing package and in a lot of
ways I believe Goldwave to be more functional and practical than Sound
Forge ever was or probably is ever likely to be, the layout of the
manual is very well done and easy to get around.
 I went to the site at http://www.goldwave.com but I couldn't find a
purchase price anywhere and (to my slight annoyance) it seems that

Re: Keyboard shortcuts for Napster

2008-03-01 Thread Doc
If you are using jaws do the following
jawskey v and turn graphics to all
control jawskey g to search for known graphics
when it has found them control shift jawskeyg to align the graphics
you should then be able to arrow down to stop. Note: You will learn to be
very friendly with your jaws cursor.

Subject: Keyboard shortcuts for Napster

 Hi
I've recently joined Napster. The screen is fairly accessible but I don't
know how to control the playing of the music by using the keys. Once I
start a track I've to wait till it stops itself.
Can anyone give shortcuts to help with this process? (I can't find
navigation shortcuts in the manual but perhaps I've not looked deeply
 enough.)
 Regards.

Re: Nero

2008-03-01 Thread John covici
I had Nero 6 and upgraded to Nero 7 and it cost $39.95, if I remember
correctly. I never bought Nero 8, so I cannot say much about it.

You might try Belarc advisor if you have it on your system to get its
serial number, or the Email when you bought it.

I have looked at John Wilson's tutorial but it does not seem to
   cover this
   but I may be mistaken.

   Any help much appreciated.

Re: Midi files

2008-03-01 Thread Bruce Toews
For every song there are at least a dozen MIDI versions floating around in
a hundred different locations. There is, or at least I have found, no
definitive MIDI repository. I've been looking for one for ages, it was
simply called Dixie and was some generic Dixieland-style stuff and I used
them for spoof commercials advertising a funeral home.

Goldwave Audio Editor

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, well I'm very impressed with this editing package and in a lot of
ways I believe Goldwave to be more functional and practical than Sound
Forge ever was or probably is ever likely to be, the layout of the
manual is very well done and easy to get around.
I went to the site at http://www.goldwave.com but I couldn't find a
purchase price anywhere and (to my slight annoyance) it seems that
Goldwave INC won't take paypal damn! but if its a fair price then
I'll save to purchase this.

Re: easy cdda extractor 10?

2008-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
You mean your output folder? If this is the case then yes, this is a
well documented problem with the current release of Easy CD DA
Distractor v11, its nothing to do with accessibility either, sighted
users have exactly the same problem so to this end, I'm very surprised
that the developer let such an obvious flaw walk out of his test bench
to the Internet, in other words, not damn good enough.

Ah, I'll take note of your email address if you don't mind, I have it
here somewhere and I'll send it to you, that version is worth hanging
 on to.
Oh! I long for those days again when every new version bought bug
fixes and enahcements instead of versions 11.x which bring us bug
bares at the cost of new features which cancel out many of the
 existing features which worked lol
