RE: Free-For-All Friday

2008-06-11 Thread albert griffith
Initially, I thought this would be a good idea but after reading the posts I
have to agree with Bruce and others who think it isn't. Since there are
other lists providing this service I see no need to provide it here. Plus,
if we provide it we'll just be diluting the audience for the other lists and
that's not a good thing. This list serves a group of people who want to get
information about how to make audio related products work and to learn about
new ones. I think we'd be biting off more than we could reasonably chew to
broaden our scope to this extent.

Re: Free-For-All Friday

2008-06-11 Thread Mike Pietruk

There is another thought that occurred to me:

Particuarly as related to this Friday, you aren't likely to see as many
postings as feared as, frankly, it's too late for the word to filter out
all that much.
So, who will post. Regular readers of this list who, for the most part,
haven't PRed anything here over time.
Give them their 10 seconds in the limelight before they return to their
obscurity of their radio shows which, with few exceptions, no one cares
much about them.
To Jonathan and Bruce, who have had their hand in this kind of streaming,
I am sure you guys have experienced the frustration of trying to get the
word out of what you do and probably appreciated every opportunity
presented to highlight it.
It is good pr for Tom and this list.
After all, so-called list rules aren't carved in stone and are guidelines
rather than inflexible albatrosses.
They are a roadmap, which thanks to the general co-operation of listers,
work most of the time; and all Tom is suggesting is a slight one-day
detour which could be viewed as a thank you to those who have not posted
such notices as a thank you for not having posted.
And, as a list is a community, while I might not actually care about these
shows, it is an opportunity to learn a little more about the folks that
make up this community.
Solid lists have to have a community feel; and this is a means of creating
such a feel.
Take it from someone who got paid to run forums for CompuServe for over a
decade: in the long-run, if you want a list to flourish, you have to
create a community atmosphere where folks not only ask and answer
questions but where also individuals learn about those who contribute as
for answers to have value, you *must* know a bit about those who are
posting those responses.
View Friday as part of that community-building process and perhaps to all
of our collective surprises, we may just discover something we might want
to listen to or learn something valuable about someone on this list.

2008-06-11 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Mike,
You hit the knell dead on the head when you said that.
One list that I'm a member of, people post once to often their home brood
radio streams.
It has gotten to the point where I just delete them without even opening
them to read them.
That also happened a few times on this list too as well.
But yes, once every now and then won't hurt anything.
My best regards.

Let me make another suggestion after reflecting on Bruce's and Jonathan's
 comments.
First, let me say I have about as much interest in reading about personal
broadcasts as taking a vacation into the eye of a category 5 hurricane.
i could care less as I don't have an interest in homebrew internet radio
as there is already plenty of mainstream streams out there.
Having said this, and as Friday the 13th is a rather rare occasion, let's
try this on Friday and see just what happens.
After Friday, Tom can sit back and evaluate the results -- how many posts,
how many negative ones posted publicly and privately, how many thank yous
both ways, and all the rest.
And see if it has a positive or negative impact on postings down the road.
Maybe twice a month is too much, but maybe a few times a year (such as on
Fridays the 13th might make sense.
While this kind of posting has no interest to me, there are people out
there that do value this kind of stuff.
Bruce and Jonathan are right that there are other lists for this kind of
thing; but, on the other hand, not everyone either knows about those lists
or would care to be bombarded by the incessant repeats week after week of
 the same thing.
These shows, whatever we think of them, are a part of the world of pc
audio and show casing them for a day or so will hurt no one especially if
we can code the subject lines.

2008-06-11 Thread Shane Jackson
Bruce, Jonathan and all. As a pretty regular podcaster, I have to
come down very heavily on your side of this issue. Jeff Bishop and
others have lists for advertising of podcasts, and I do not believe
this should be the purpose of this particular list. It has not
reallly ever been encouraged or even allowed in many cases, nor should
it be. I thought this list was for the discussion of things audio-
related, not a place to promote something that can surely be promoted
on lists created strictly for that purpose, such as the blindcasting
list. It is at freelists, so it is very simple to subscribe. That
list is for all things podcasting, including the promotion of same.
Thanks for reading, and please do not allow advertising on this list.
Did I say please?

I think this is a good idea but I'd like to see the idea extended
slightly so people could let people on the list know of podcasts or
online radio stations they find interesting even if the person
mentioning the podcast or station isn't involved with that podcast
 or
 station.

I know several list members who have podcasts and webcasts
and there are probably many others who I do not know about.
I've been trying to think of a way to help podcasters and
webcasters promote their casts and came up with this idea.

Maybe a couple times a month, say the first and third Friday
of each month, we could have a free-for-all Friday when any
list member could post a short concise message telling about
their cast. I'm thinking posts could be made all day Friday
UTC. I would send out a message to the list a few hours
prior to the start of the Friday time period and explain that
it is a free-for-all Friday and what UTC time would be in the
United States and maybe other parts of the world.

If I don't get too many complaints against doing this maybe
we can try it this Friday, the thirteenth of June.

I think Mike has offered a rational approach here. A suggestion has been

and trying it once seems reasonable enough. Like Mike, I really have no

It seems to me that unsubscribing from the list over this issue might be
just a tad extreme, premature at the very least. But if that is what works

These shows, whatever we think of them, are a part of the world of pc
audio and show casing them for a day or so will hurt no one especially if
we can code the subject lines.

should be the showcase for it. I enjoy this list because it has relatively
low traffic and I can get answers to my audio related questions from
knowledgeable people. To stray from that would diminish the lists value to
me. Allowing this stuff on special days or for trial periods is just a
compromise not worth making. It might be good to point people in the

Hi Larry, I don't think anyone is threatening anyone with anything. If a
list no longer meets one's needs, it's perfectly appropriate to leave that
list. As the discussion is about whether a change in the direction of the
list is a good idea, those who believe that such a change would mean that
the list no longer meets their needs are just as entitled to express a view
as are those who believe it's a good idea.

I already subscribe to a number of lists that exist exclusively for this

Re: Free-For-All Friday

2008-06-11 Thread Tom
There will be no change to the rules and guidelines for the
pc audio list. Thanks to all for your thoughtful and
enlightening comments. I actually aggree with most of the
posts thinking that an e-mail list should be rather
restrictive in the content that is permitted. I'll explain
my reasoning below for making the suggestion if anyone is
interested in reading it. Otherwise, go to the next message.

A week or so ago there were a few comments posted to the list
about a piece of software that was no longer going to be
accessible with a screen reader. Shortly after reading those
posts I listened to the May issue of FS Cast and was amazed
what all Jonathan was doing with the PAC Mate Omni. I got to
thinking, and me thinking is a problem in itself, this is
something any blind person who is the least bit interested in
audio and computers should hear. I'm sure those podcasts
have more listeners than this list has members, but there
might be members of this list who aren't aware of that
podcast. Likewise, there are other podcasts that I think are
extremely helpful in teaching and demonstrating a lot of
accessible hardware and software and perhaps a few list
members would find them of interest. I think sometimes, we
emphasize too much the negative and forget the positives of
accessibility.

Thanks again,

Tom

Hi

I also think that pointing people to the other lists for this
purpose is the way to go here. It seems to me that that's why those
lists exist so why not? Yes it can be argued that podcasts are audio
related, but if there are lists for the purpose of advertising them,
why not just post that stuff there? The adds wouldn't really bother
me, but I know it does a lot of other folks so that seems like a good
compromise.

I think we need to distinguish between informational podcasts and programs
from those geared at entertainment only (music shows come to mind in this
latter category).
Most of the objections seem directed at this last type of promotion which,
needless to say, is the most prevalent kinds of announcements seen on the
ad lists.
Can anyone suggest a source for this kind of news that doesn't carry the
kind of baggage that bothers most folks.
Or perhaps a slight revision of Pc-Audio guidelines might take care of
that.

RE: Free-For-All Friday

Albert

Right, bigger isn't better; but what is better is having to draw from a
wider array of individuals when opinions or suggestions are sought.
I am guessing, based on what I am reading here, is that twice a month is
probably too much; but a few times a year, such as Friday the 13ths or
quarterly, probably wouldn't overtax the list.
I get the sense that Tom is trying to think out of the box unlike some 2nd
or 3rd generation list owners, who reflexively say that's the way it
always was and, hence, must be.
Well, my study of the Bible has not let me to find any mandated rules or
precepts for any given email list meaning
that, as they were created by man, man is free to change them as seen fit.
And, oh yes, an owner can do whatever they wish with their lists as on
topic is a relative term which an owner can make as broad or narrow as
desired.
Of course, if list recipients don't agree with the owner's approach, the
owner may have his list (with his beloved rules) but no posts.

Tom, in this instance, has not suggested the changing of guidelines on a
permanent basis. What he has suggested is trying, at least on a one day

2008-06-11 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi tom, let me say that as the founder of this list, I am really glad you
are looking after it. It's a thankless task. I also think it's a credit to
you that you sound people out for their views on these sorts of issues.

I'd like to suggest that there is a difference between free for all
advertising of podcasts and streams, and the mentioning of PC-Audio related
streams or podcasts in context. For example, I think someone posted here
about the recent main menu broadcast on MP3 players. To me, such a post is
perfectly appropriate, since it directs people to additional info on matters
pertaining to the subject matter of this list. Similarly, I think in
response to someone's question about iTunes on here a while back, I directed
people to the January FSCast.

Similarly, I think the may FSCast would indeed be of real interest to people
on here. To be honest I just forgot to mention it here.

Petro often mentions his podcasts on Replay AV, and that's right on topic
too in my opinion.

This, to me, is all good stuff. What I think would detract from the list is
everyone being able to write in to say, come and listen to my podcast where
I've done a sound seeing tour of my dentist's waiting room or whatever.

So to me, if the subject matter of a stream or podcast is of the kind that
would be considered on topic for this list, it is worth a one-off mention.

Thanks for your work on the list and keep up the great work.

Jonathan, Please be assured that I agree. It is appropriate for any group
member to leave any group at any time that he or she wishes. My post was a
bit of a tongue in cheek response to the repeticious I'll leave the group
posts. It represented my thoughts after looking in on the group and seeing
that every single post available to me weighed in on this one topic. Are
such posts of any more value than broadcast promos from other members? To
me, they are not. To me, advisories stating that one may wish to leave the
group might be more appropriately directed to the moderator. Of course, as
always, your mileage may vary.

peculiar problem.

2008-06-11 Thread Curtis Delzer
Hi all! I need someone who really knows about audio editing to take a
crack at this one.
Old condition, new computer: normalize a one hour and thirty minute
file: fifty seconds.
now, about 10 months later, almost three minutes.

I unload scanners, have defragged, un-installed diskeeper, since it
would go into it's auto-defragging mode when it thought I wasn't
doing something and screw up recordings, so, bye bye! What else can I do?
All conditions the same, ... same chip, same OS, same 1Gig memory, (xp home).
Please, it would save me an inordinate amount of time is someone
could help me solve this one. We're talking almost a 3 to one ratio of time.
Program, Sound Forge 8, (or 9, about the same amount of time).

PC audio is a specialty within a specialty, so it would be smaller
than overall technology, like blind_tech. This list should be
consistent with discussing audio newcomers problems and experienced
audio engineers, so the traffic isn't too much to discourage the old
hand from hanging around to help the newcomer. If I had to wade
through advertising about shows, where people show off their talents
at whatever, e.g. presenting the sounds of the eighties, or oldies,
or new songs, or even discussion about technology, I could look for a
podcast or cruise for some such via other methods, not here, please. :)

That's exactly the kind of distinction I would like made. The kinds of
things you and Petro do are invaluable to folks today (or down the road)
in aiding us to gain more out of pc-audio whereas someone's weekly plug
for their oldies show of 1956 or that beloved tour of their apartment,
well who really cares.
Certainly, Dean Martineau's Weekly TopTechTidbits Newsletter has done a
good job of alerting folks to such things; but more venues for this info,
on a timely basis, is needed.
This is the type of thing where a list such as this can shine.

I see the rationale of discouraging such postings. Perhaps such
announcements ought to be sent to the moderator who, if he felt they
warranted a mention, would repost them.
Perhaps something else is workable.

wWe need to encourage those that take the time to do such work be it on
their own or at the behest of their employer.

I get the sense that Tom is trying to think out of the box unlike some 2nd
or 3rd generation list owners, who reflexively say that's the way it always
was and, hence, must be.
Well, my study of the Bible has not let me to find any mandated rules or
precepts for any given email list meaning that, as they were created by man,
man is free to change them as seen fit.

What he has suggested is trying, at least on a one day
basis, something different which may or may not work.

I can see folks reacting negatively if this was to be a permanent change of
direction. No where do I see this being advocated here.

Hi,

I've yet to weigh in on this topic but I'll give you my thoughts now. If it
has anything to do with audio related matters and programs that provide us
with ways and means of doing things with audio and such by all means that
works. As for podcasts talking about touring my living space, my moldy
oldies show, or my day in the dentist chair; puh lease spare me and the rest

I agree completely. I made an assumption that when we were talking about
podcasts and other homemade broadcasts that we were talking about audio
related topics. Those are the only such announcements that would intrest me.
My mistake for believing that was what would be allowed to a greater degree
and perhaps with a slightly broader range. I have no interest in anyone's
tour of their dentist's office or in any other non media related podcast.
Come to think of it, I have to psych myself up before visiting my own

1. Does anyone know of a very detailed tutorial/walk through discription
of using the
The Baringer USB Zoom 2H Z Podcasting Kit?

I checked out blind cool tech site and a person named Neil was mentioned in
Christian's podcast and I'd like to find that podcast.

2. Does one need to buy the zoom and podcast separate or does all this
comein one package?

3. Please share any good/bad experiences you've had with the device. I am
considering buying one to use in class as a tool for students to learn
how to create podcast.

4. Christian's podcast mentioned the unit cost 80 pounds in the UUK. What
is the transfer rate as of today, June 11, 2008?

Thanks for any help in advance.
