Foobar 2000

2008-12-30 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

Experimenting with foobar 2000 again after quite a few years.

The version I used to have had shortcut keys for things like play, pause
etc on the bottom row. Has this now been removed from the newer versions or
do you have to designate them yourself?

The player seems to be very accessible. But are there any hints regarding
the maximum accessibility anyone can give me?

dasy software packages?

2008-12-30 Thread goshawk
hello list,
I have recently got a portable daisy talking book player, and would like to
start making my own daisy book disks, from my own audio library.
please can anyone recommend a good fully featured daisy creating software
package? it needs to be fully accessible, using window-eyes.

the package needs to be fully featured, as I would like to make the disks fully
navigable, as I will probably put several books, radio series, or audio
described film audio tracks, on to one disk, and would like to be able to
select which book or series I want, and easily navigate my way around that book
or series, by chapter or episode, or if a particular series had several seasons
of it, I would like to be able to navigate by series, season, or episode. I
hope I have explained that ok. however, just to make things interesting, the
audio books in my library, are all formatted differently, as there are some,
that have only as many files, as there were tapes or cds in the original, there
are some, that have been taken from cd, with each track on each cd being a
file, and there are some, that have just been formatted as a single big file
for the whole book.

also, the stuff I have, has not all been encoded at the same bit rate, and I
have had problems with some mp3 disks before, that will play perfectly in mp3
cd players, dvd players, and my computer, but when I try to play them in my
talking book machine, it says something like audio format not supported even
though they are mp3 files, and I would like the software package to be able to
sort this out if possible, as it is probably something simple, such as
re-encoding the mp3 files, in a bit rate that the talking book machine will
handle.

it would also be quite useful, if the package could have some equaliser, volume
boosting, sound enhancement, and unwanted noise removal tools. as some of the
stuff I have, either because it was taken from very old recordings, was
recorded at too lower level on one or both channels, or encoded at too lower
bit rate, doesn't sound that good, which is something, that I would really like
to improve if possible, before making daisy disks of it.

it would also be nice, if the package could actually record directly from a
line or digital in, as I still have a lot of stuff on tape, dat, and minidisk.
and if it could also take audio from standard audio cds, which I could use the
drive in the computer to read, it would be even better.

finally, if possible, I would like the package, to be able to work with
different audio formats, as not all the stuff in my library is in mp3 format,
some of it is in .ogg, some in .wma, some in standard uncompressed .wav, and
some in a form of compressed .wav format. I think it is going to be a bit much,
to expect the software to work with things like free lossless audio codec, and
monkeys audio files, but if the daisy software package could also use existing
audio codec's, even this could be possible.

Re: dasy software packages?

2008-12-30 Thread Ray
Hi.

Only got general recommendations and links to offer in your persuit of of
DAISY creation software, but hope it helps.

First off: the DAISY org site which will tell you a lot about the various
software packages and hardware options:

http://tinyurl.com/8zgfqd

Second, Brian Hartgen is the source of much knowledge here in the UK,

The last mentioned software package on this page, the Book Wizzard by A P H,
is, I think, free, and seems to be highly regarded by some.
www.hartgen.org

A final thought: the PTR2 CD/CF card recorder is a pretty easy to use
solution enabling pretty painless conversion in one box. There is a list,
on Freelists I think, the PtR1 users list for this equipment. (Don't be put
off by the name; it was started back in the days of the PTR1, but most
discussion there is/is around the PTR2 successor.

AS for sample rate and bit rate conversion, not sure if you will find much
support for that within the DAISY creation software packages, and I would in
any case personally look to Goldwave, Sound Forge, Studio recorder for this
and the audio processing optionsfacilities you might want.

You will not be able to do all you want to do with one package, and you will
have to do some work. For instance, if your player doesn't handle certain
formats, you'll have to convert them using some other means.

Book Wizard Producer from American Printing House coxsts $200.00 US.

If you're willing to read its pretty straightforward manual, some, though
not all, of what you want to do you can do free with the Daisy Book
Generator, available from

http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl/daisy.htm

Basically, you put mp3 files into a folder, run this free program from the
context menu for the folder, and it converts the folder contents into a
Daisy book which you can then load onto your player. I have been turning
podcasts and mp3 audio files into Daisy books with this for my player with
great success.

hello, there are 2 types of blank cd-r. 1. cdr-da. or music cd-rs. these are
for consumer based recorders, there is no difference in quality. only
price. all professional cd recorders should take the data type of cd-rs and
you can use them for both music and data recording.
the consumer recorders like philips, sony makes one, are not worth buying.
because you are stuck using the consumer cd-r da. cdrs only. a data type of
cd won't work in those recorders.
2 good brands that are used for music are taiyo yuden and mitsui.

hope this helps. les

these tyopes of discs are used for recorders that require music cd's. this
is how the ptr-2 knows how to set itself up for the proper recording you
want to do with it. if you were to put a data cd in the ptr-2 you could burn
mp3 files on to it for playback on a machine that plays mp3 files.

 Hi to all

What exactly is the difference between blank cds that you record music
 onto
and blank cds you use for recording data on?

The reason I ask this is because when I got my plextalk ptr2 a few months
ago, I received a blank cd with it which according to the manual is
specifically meant for burning audio cds. So what is the difference and
 is
it really worth concerning yourself about it?

I use a shareware program equal or better than textaloud. It is called
Dspeech. It is easy to use and handles all sappi voices and it works very
well. It has been developed by one man but did a pretty good job. You can
download it free and send in a donation as you so see fit.
Again, D speech. there is a POD cast on BCL site on it if it is still
there. You will have to do a search on where to find the program, I
forgot where I tgot it but the guy has his own site with several other
pretty good programs.
I have use every Text to MP3 or speech out there and this fits my bill
just fine.

I have use every Text to MP3 or speech out there and this fits my bill
just fine.

Re: need help installing cdex.

2008-12-30 Thread Barry Chapman
Hi Angel,

You shouldn't have anywhere near 240 files, even if you downloaded all of the
language options.

I suggest that you download an installation file from
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download

The latest release version is 1.51, which has been around for quite some time.
The latest beta is 1.70 (Beta 2) which has also been
around for a long time, so it would appear that work on this program has
stopped.

If, when you first try to run it, you get an error, you might also need to
install some ASPI drivers for Windows XP. There is
information on the download page about this. I don't know if the program runs
with Vista.

I have been using the beta version with Windows XP Home for some time without
any problems.

Regards,
Barry Chapman

Re: Text to MP3

2008-12-30 Thread tickpub
I can't remember how I did it but for me, if I did it, then anyone can
but I know it is a stan alone program. That means it does not get into
your regeristry. So, from what I know you just download it to your rive
where you keep your programs, C:\ or ? and just click on it and it shold
then open. I think it sets up a shortcut key on your desktop, can't
remember but it is just an .exe or X file so it should open right up.
You can email the guy from his site and ask but I think it should be very
simple.
Once it is in your drive, locate it and right click on it an see what it
tells you there.
Sorry I cannot tell you more.
